The pineal organ (pineal gland, epiphysis cerebri) contains several calcified concretions called "brain sand" or acervuli (corpora arenacea). These concretions are conspicuous with imaging techniques and provide a useful landmark for orientation in the diagnosis of intracranial diseases. Predominantly composed of calcium and magnesium salts, corpora arenacea are numerous in old patients. In smaller number they can be present in children as well. The degree of calcification was associated to various diseases. However, the presence of calcified concretions seems not to reflect a specific patholo

Gnathostomiasis is a foodborne zoonotic helminthic infection, commonly described in Asia and Latin America, which may follow the consumption of raw fish, eels, amphibians, and reptiles infected with muscle-encysted larvae of Gnathostoma species nematodes. After an inoculum of as little as one infective larva and an incubation period of months to years, most infections are characterized by intermittent migratory swellings due to subdermal larval migration. Less commonly, larval migration to the central nervous system may result in radiculomyelopathy or eosinophilic meningoencephalitis with high

The cranial ossification sequence in Pleurodeles waltl is widely used in phylogenetic analyses of amphibian origin and evolution. However, the patterns published to date are far from completely resolved and contain certain discrepancies. Based on a large sample of P. waltl specimens ranging from early post-hatching larvae to post-metamorphic newts, we determined the most common cranial ossification sequence and revealed its intraspecific variations. Since thyroid hormones (THs) are involved in the mediation of skull development in salamanders, we studied the role of THs in the cranial developm

A 255-bp cDNA encoding an 84-amino acid residue (aa) precursor protein containing 8 half-cysteines was cloned from the skin of the frog, Ceratophrys calcarata. By sequence comparison and signal peptide prediction, the precursor was predicted to release a 63-aa mature peptide with amino acid sequence, NVTPATKPTPSKPGYCRVMDELILCPDPPLSKDLCKNDSDCPGAQKCCYRTCIMQCLPPIFRE. The mature was named ceratoxin. Ceratoxin shares significant sequence similarity with the toxin family of waprins containing the whey acidic protein-type (WAP) four-disulfide core domain found in snake venoms. Antimicrobial and tryps

Pseudin-2, isolated from the frog Pseudis paradoxa, exhibits potent antibacterial activity but also cytotoxicity. In an effort to develop clinically applicable antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), we designed pseudin-2 analogs with Lys substitutions, resulting in elevated amphipathic α-helical structure and cationicity. In addition, truncated analogs of pseudin-2 and Lys-substituted peptides were synthesized to produce linear 18-residue amphipathic α-helices, which were further investigated for their mechanism and functions. These truncated analogs exhibited higher antimicrobial activity and lower c

Activin as a neurodifferentiation factor. Our studies of neurotransmitter expression have focused on the expression of neuropeptide transmitters in the avian ciliary ganglion (CG) and have examined the influence of choroidal vascular smooth muscle cells in regulating the differential expression of somatostatin in the CG. In these activities we have identified activin A as a potential target-derived neurodifferentiation factor that can stimulate somatostatin expression in cultured CG neurons. In cultured CG neurons, activin can stimulate the expression of somatostatin in choroid neurons, the pa

Six forms of helospectin (a vasoactive intestinal peptide analogue) were purified from the venom of the Heloderma horridum lizard. Their identification was performed by combining sequencing by automated Edman degradation and electrospray mass spectrometry analysis on the complete peptides and their tryptic fragments. The products resulting from the action of an O-glycosidase were also analysed. Two forms were identified as the previously named Hs1 and Hs2 of 38 and 37 amino-acid residues, respectively. Two forms corresponded to Hs1 and Hs2 O-glycosylated by a N-acetylhexosamine-hexose motif at

The potential for the use of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) as anticancer agents has garnered much interest because of their selective cytotoxicity to tumor cells and ability to evade multidrug resistance mechanisms. AMPs are shorter cationic amphiphilic molecules, part of our innate immune system, with direct membrane-disruptive activity and immunomodulatory effects. Anticancer peptides (ACPs) can be derived from natural biophysical sources or synthetically engineered, taking advantage of the unique biophysical properties of cancer cell membranes to exert their anti-tumor activities rapidly an

Alcohol addiction (alcoholism) is one of the most prevalent substance abuse disorders worldwide. Addiction is thought to arise, in part, from a maladaptive learning process in which enduring memories of drug experiences are formed. However, alcohol (ethanol) generally interferes with synaptic plasticity mechanisms in the CNS and thus impairs various types of learning and memory. Therefore, it is unclear how powerful memories associated with alcohol experience are formed during the development of alcoholism. Here, using brain slice electrophysiology in mice, we show that repeated in vivo ethano

BackgroundMesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are widely dispersed in vivo and are isolated from several tissues, including bone marrow, heart, body fluids, skin, and perinatal tissues. Bone marrow MSCs have a multidirectional differentiation potential, which can be induced to differentiate the medium in a specific direction or by adding specific regulatory factors. MSCs repair damaged tissues through lineage differentiation, and the ex vivo transplantation of bone marrow MSCs can heal injured sites. MSCs have different propensities for lineage differentiation and pathological evolution for differen

Fipronil is a highly effective, broad-spectrum insecticide with potential value for the control of a wide range of crop, public hygiene, amenity, and veterinary pests. It can generally be applied at low to very low dose rates to achieve effective pest control. Application rates vary between 0.6 and 200 g a.i./ha, depending on the target pest and formulation. It belongs to the phenyl pyrazole or fiprole group of chemicals and is a potent disrupter of the insect central nervous system via interference with the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA-) regulated chloride channel. Fipronil degrades slowly o

H(+) is maintained constant in the internal environment at a given body temperature independent of external environment according to Bernard's principle of "milieu interieur". But CO2 relates to ventilation and H(+) to kidney. Hence, the title of the chapter. In order to do this, sensors for H(+) in the internal environment are needed. The sensor-receptor is CO2/H(+) sensing. The sensor-receptor is coupled to integrate and to maintain the body's chemical environment at equilibrium. This chapter dwells on this theme of constancy of H(+) of the blood and of the other internal environments. [H(+)

Plesiomonas shigelloides, an aquatic Gram-negative bacillus often associated with self-limiting gastroenteritis, has been reported worldwide. However, to date, no reviews have specifically investigated P. shigelloides bacteremia, which is rare and potentially fatal. This scoping review aimed to examine the existing literature to identify the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, antimicrobial susceptibility, and outcomes of P. shigelloides bacteremia. A PRISMA-ScR-guided search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase identified 22 published cases, all reported as single-patient case re

The onset and relapse of autoimmune diseases (AIDs) are triggered by autoimmune attacks on target tissues. However, symptoms are unlikely to appear if damaged cells are rapidly replaced. Addressing the implications of this premise, the present work examines the balance between target tissue destruction and recovery rates as a key factor in the mechanisms of remissions and relapses in AIDs. The theory, supported by published clinical data, suggests that remissions are improbable in AIDs characterized by slow target tissue recovery. Conversely, a high recovery rate is a necessary (though not suf

Public health is connected to cannabis with regard to food, animal feed (feed), and pharmaceuticals. Therefore, the use of phytocannabinoids should be examined from a One Health perspective. Current knowledge on medical cannabis treatment (MCT) does not address sufficiently diseases which are of epidemiological and of zoonotic concern. The use of cannabinoids in veterinary medicine is illegal in most countries, mostly due to lack of evidence-based medicine. To answer the growing need of scientific evidence-based applicable medicine in both human and veterinary medicine, a new approach for the

Osteocytes are terminally differentiated cells of the osteoblast lineage. They are involved in the regulation of bone remodeling by increasing osteoclast formation or decreasing bone formation by the secretion of the osteoblast inhibitor sclerostin. Monoclonal antibody anti-sclerostin, Romosozumab, has been developed and tested in clinical trials in patients with osteoporosis. In the last years, the role of osteocytes in the development of osteolytic bone lesions that occurs in multiple myeloma, have been underlined. Myeloma cells increase osteocyte death through the up-regulation of both apop

Cannabis has been used to relieve the symptoms of disease for thousands of years. However, social and political biases have limited effective interrogation of the potential benefits of cannabis and polarised public opinion. Further, the medicinal and clinical utility of cannabis is limited by the psychotropic side effects of ∆9-tetrahydrocannabinol (∆9-THC). Evidence is emerging for the therapeutic benefits of cannabis in the treatment of neurological and neurodegenerative diseases, with potential efficacy as an analgesic and antiemetic for the management of cancer-related pain and treatment-r

Cancer-induced cardiac dysfunction has become a major clinical challenge as advances in cancer therapies continue to extend patient survival. Once regarded as a secondary concern, cardiotoxicity is now recognized as a leading contributor to morbidity and mortality among cancer patients and survivors. Its pathophysiology is multifactorial, involving systemic inflammation (e.g., TNF-α, IL-6), oxidative stress driven by reactive oxygen species (ROS), neurohormonal imbalances (e.g., angiotensin II, endothelin-1), and metabolic disturbances. These mechanisms collectively promote cardiomyocyte apopt

Cancer is a multifaceted global health issue and one of the leading causes of death worldwide. In recent years, medical science has achieved great advances in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Despite the numerous advantages of conventional cancer therapies, there are major drawbacks including severe side effects, toxicities, and drug resistance. Therefore, the urgency of developing new drugs with low cytotoxicity and treatment resistance is increasing. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have attracted attention as a novel therapeutic strategy for the treatment of various cancers, targeting tu
