Shifts in vegetation impact estuary microbiomes.

Coastal wetlands, including mangrove-cordgrass mosaics, are among Earth's most effective carbon stores sequestering >1 Pg C/year. Rapid sea level rise, warming, and storm intensification are now reshaping these habitats. Vegetation type influences root exudates, sediment redox profiles, and organic matter quality. However, the impacts of vegetation on microbe-virus networks that mediate carbon burial and nutrient cycling remain unclear. Here, we sampled coastal sediment profiles in patches of cordgrass (dominated by Sporobolus alterniflorus), black mangrove (Avicennia germinans), and seagrass

Impacts of flooding on agricultural soil microbiome.

As a result of climate change, increased flooding events have been recorded across the globe. The role of soil microbiomes in soil health and fertility is well recognized, as these microbial communities drive essential processes such as nutrient cycling, organic matter decomposition, and plant health. The composition and function of these communities can be highly sensitive to environmental changes. The aim of this study is to identify the impacts of flooding on soil microbiome composition and diversity. Paired flooded and non-flooded agricultural soils were collected from Germany, Ireland, an

Embodied Sensory Deprivation Hypothesis (ESDH): An Evolutionary Model of Sensory Malnutrition Linking Interoceptive Dysregulation, Anxiety, and Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction.

The human nervous system evolved in environments characterized by continuous exposure to rich, multimodal bodily inputs, including locomotion, manual activity, physical effort, social touch, sexual contact, environmental variability, thermal fluctuations, and complex proprioceptive challenges. In contrast, modern lifestyles have progressively reduced many of these embodied sensory exposures through sedentarism, automation, climate-controlled environments, cushioned footwear, reduced manual labor, digital socialization, and diminished physical contact. Here, we propose the Embodied Sensory Depr

[Material basis of Lianpu Drink in treatment of spleen-stomach dampness-heat syndrome based on chinmedomics].

This study aimed to investigate the blood biomarkers for a rat model of spleen-stomach dampness-heat syndrome(SSDHS) treated by Lianpu Drink and unravel the underlying material basis based on the strategy of chinmedomics. Firstly, the rat model of SSDHS was established by a combined method of internal induction(200 g·L~(-1) honey water + wine + lard) + external exposure(artificial climate box). Metabolomics based on ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry(UPLC-Q-TOF-MS) was employed to identify the blood biomarkers. The efficacy of Lianpu Drink

Urban stormwater green infrastructure: Evaluating the public health service role of bioretention using microbial source tracking and bacterial community analyses.

Bioretention cells (BRCs) control stormwater flow on-site during precipitation, reducing runoff and improving water quality through chemical, physical, and biological processes. While BRCs are effective in these aspects, they provide habitats for wildlife and may face microbial hazards from fecal shedding, posing a potential threat to human health and the nearby environment. However, limited knowledge exists regarding the ability to control microbial hazards (e.g., beyond using typical indicator bacteria) through stormwater biofiltration. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to characterize

Extensive Countrywide Molecular Identification and High Genetic Diversity of Haemonchus spp. in Domestic Ruminants in Greece.

The gastrointestinal nematode parasite Haemonchus spp. is one of the most pathogenic parasites of ruminants, due to its blood-sucking activity, which causes large economic losses in the ruminant industry. The latest epizootiological data recorded an increase in the infection, not only in Greece but also in other countries, mainly attributed to climatic changes. The study of the population structure and the investigation of the phylogenetic relationships of Haemonchus spp. are essential for the understanding of its biology and epizootiology to implement appropriate control and prevention strate

Mass Spectrometry-Based Method to Measure Aflatoxin B1 DNA Adducts in Formalin-Fixed Paraffin-Embedded Tissues.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a potent human liver carcinogen produced by certain molds, particularly Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus, which contaminate peanuts, corn, rice, cottonseed, and ground and tree nuts, principally in warm and humid climates. AFB1 undergoes bioactivation in the liver to produce AFB1-exo-8,9-epoxide, which forms the covalently bound cationic AFB1-N7-guanine (AFB1-N7-Gua) DNA adduct. This adduct is unstable and undergoes base-catalyzed opening of the guanine imidazolium ring to form two ring-opened diastereomeric 8,9-dihydro-8-(2,6-diamino-4-oxo-3,4-dihydropyrim

Selection and Molecular Characterization of Promising Plum Rootstocks (Prunus cerasifera L.) among Seedling-Origin Trees.

The plum (Prunus cerasifera Ehrh) has been used worldwide both as a genetic source for breeding new rootstocks and as clonal rootstock for many Prunus species. Considering situations where wild relatives of plums are endangered, in-depth characterization of rootstock traits of genetic diversity of plum germplasm of Turkey with many ecogeographical locations is crucial. In the present study, therefore, three steps were followed for the selection of rootstock candidates among the plum germplasm grown in the Middle Euphrates. This region is characterized by an extremely hot climate with extremely

Molecular Self-Organization in Surfactant Atmospheric Aerosol Proxies.

ConspectusAerosols are ubiquitous in the atmosphere. Outdoors, they take part in the climate system via cloud droplet formation, and they contribute to indoor and outdoor air pollution, impacting human health and man-made environmental change. In the indoor environment, aerosols are formed by common activities such as cooking and cleaning. People can spend up to ca. 90% of their time indoors, especially in the western world. Therefore, there is a need to understand how indoor aerosols are processed in addition to outdoor aerosols.Surfactants make significant contributions to aerosol emissions,

Cross-Evaluation of Reflectivity from NEXRAD and Global Precipitation Mission during Extreme Weather Events.

During extreme events such as tropical cyclones, the precision of sensors used to sample the meteorological data is vital to feed weather and climate models for storm path forecasting, quantitative precipitation estimation, and other atmospheric parameters. For this reason, periodic data comparison between several sensors used to monitor these phenomena such as ground-based and satellite instruments, must maintain a high degree of correlation in order to issue alerts with an accuracy that allows for timely decision making. This study presents a cross-evaluation of the radar reflectivity from t

Transthyretin (prealbumin) in health and disease: nutritional implications.

The name "transthyretin" reflects the dual physiological roles of this tetrameric unglycosylated plasma protein. TTR is one of three specific carrier proteins involved in the transport of both thyroid hormones and of retinol through the mediation of RBP. TTR is a product of the visceral compartment, and its hepatic synthesis is exquisititely sensitive to both the adequacy and levels of protein and energy intakes--hence the proposal of TTR as a nutritional marker. To date, 38 TTR variants have been described, most of which are associated with variable degrees of cardiac and/or neural tissue amy

Rheumatoid arthritis: disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs.

A review of the trials in which 'disease-modifying' drugs have been tested leads to the following conclusions: (a) Most of these trials do not provide acceptable evidence of the efficacy of these drugs. (b) A well-designed, placebo-controlled, study of gold (Empire Rheumatism Council, 1960, 1961) provides strong evidence that the drug has a beneficial effect lasting about 18 months. It does not establish any advantage beyond that period. Two reports which claim to show a favourable influence of gold on radiological progression are suspect because of faults in trial design. An Exploration into Life, Body, Materials, Culture of Mediaeval East Asia: Focusing on Emergency Medicine Recipes in Local Medicinals of Koryŏ Dynasty.

The Emergency Medicine Recipes in Local Medicinals (Hyang'yak Kugŭpbang) (c. 14th century) is known to be one of the oldest Korean medical textbooks that exists in its entirety. This study challenges conventional perceptions that have interpreted this text by using modern concepts, and it seeks to position the medical activities of the late Koryŏ Dynasty (918-1392) to the early Chosŏn Dynasty (1392-1910) in medical history with a focus on this text. According to existing studies, Emergency Medicine Recipes in Local Medicinals is a strategic compromise of the Korean elite in response to the inf

Systematic Review of Metallic, Industrial, and Pharmaceutical Emerging Contaminants in Snow and Ice: A Global Perspective from Polar and High-Mountain Regions.

Emerging contaminants (ECs) comprise diverse pollutant classes that are increasingly detected in remote environments due to their persistence and long-range transport potential. In cold regions, atmospheric cold-trapping processes favour their accumulation in high-altitude and high-latitude snow and ice, which act as sensitive archives and secondary sources of contamination. While previous studies have addressed individual environmental compartments (e.g., snowpack, glacier ice, meltwater), focusing on specific contaminant classes, a systematic review integrating the occurrence, behaviour and

Insects shape the cadaver decomposition microbiome and postmortem interval estimation accuracy.

The breakdown and recycling of carrion is a crucial ecological process that largely relies on a community of necrophagous insects and microbes. Recent work has shown that a specialized microbial network, likely dispersed throughout the environment by insects, assembles during cadaver decomposition to break down flesh regardless of climate and geography. Because of their broad distribution and successional nature, decomposer microbes have been used in machine learning models to predict the postmortem interval (PMI) of human remains, an important contribution to the field of forensics. How facto

Grafting and biodynamic nanosilica-induced physiological and transcriptomic modulation of chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) under drought stress.

Chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) is an economically important vegetable crop cultivated worldwide. Increasing drought stress associated with climate change has severely reduced chilli productivity. Although grafting and silicon-based nanomaterials have each been investigated independently as drought mitigation strategies in Solanaceae crops, this study represents, to our knowledge, the first investigation of their combined physiological, yield, and genome-wide transcriptomic effects in chilli under experimentally validated drought stress. Biodynamic nanosilica (BNS) is an α-quartz nanoparticle prep

Genomic and physiological characterization of newly isolated nitrous oxide-reducing bacterium Stutzerimonas frequens strain E49 from landfill leachate-treating activated sludge.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas and ozone-depleting substance, with a global warming potential 273 times greater than CO2 over a 100-year horizon. Microbial reduction of N2O to dinitrogen represents a key pathway for mitigating emissions under diverse environmental conditions. Here, we report the first comprehensive genomic and physiological characterization of Stutzerimonas frequens strain E49, a newly isolated N2O-reducing bacterium obtained from activated sludge treating landfill leachate. Whole-genome sequencing revealed a 4.51-Mbp circular chromosome and a 35.3-kbp plasmid

Hydrological continuums across climate and permafrost gradients: Spatial patterns of organic carbon, greenhouse gases, and major and trace elements.

Organic and inorganic solute fluxes from soils to rivers follow a hydrological continuum linking terrestrial and aquatic compartments, yet this cascade remains poorly constrained in permafrost regions despite its importance for carbon and greenhouse gas (GHG) cycling. We investigated six hydrological continuums-soil water, fen, lake, riparian zone, stream, and river-across a 1500 km north-south transect of the Western Siberian Lowland, spanning the full gradient from permafrost-free taiga to continuous permafrost tundra. During summer baseflow, surface and soil waters were analyzed for dissolv
