An assessment on the effects of buffers on the productive, behavioral and metabolic parameters of Holstein dairy cows.

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of supplementing sodium bicarbonate or a commercial blend of buffering agents (BBA) comprising calcareous calcitic, magnesium oxide, calcareous algae, and sodium bicarbonate on the productive, behavioral and metabolic parameters of Holstein cows fed starchy diets. Over a 60-day trial period, thirty-six multiparous cows with an average milk yield of 38.84 ± 9.24 kg/day and 63.74 ± 18.63 days in milk (DIM), were randomly divided into two groups. The control group (n = 18) received a supplementation of 1.1% dry matter (DM) of sodium bicarbonate (Raudi®, Tot

Effect of Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation product on feed intake parameters, lactation performance, and metabolism of transition dairy cattle.

The transition period in dairy cattle is characterized by many stressors, including an abrupt diet change, but yeast product supplementation can alter the rumen environment to increase dairy cattle productivity. Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation product (SCFP) was fed from -29 ± 5 to 42 d relative to calving (RTC) to evaluate the effects on feed intake, milk production, and metabolism. Treatments were control (n = 30) or SCFP (n = 34) incorporated into a total mixed ration. Cows were individually fed 3×/d prepartum and 2×/d postpartum. Blood samples were collected once during each of the f

Improving ruminal degradability and energetic values of bamboo shoot shell using chemical treatments.

This study evaluated effects of different treatments on nutritive value of bamboo shoot shell (BSS). Five treatments were sun-drying (control), ammoniation (5%/dry matter (DM) urea), Ca(OH)2 (4%/DM calcium hydroxide), NaOH (4%/DM sodium hydroxide), and AHP (4%/DM sodium hydroxide plus 1%/DM hydrogen peroxide). The results showed that chemical composition of BSS was greatly changed by chemicals (P < 0.01) except acid-detergent lignin. All chemical treatments significantly reduced neutral detergent fiber (NDF) content except AHP (P < 0.01), and obviously increased acid detergent fiber (ADF) cont

A model to optimise the requirements of lactating dairy cows for physically effective neutral detergent fibre.

This study modelled multiple physiological responses of dairy cows to physical and chemical characteristics of a diet aiming to optimise their requirements for physically effective neutral detergent fibre, expressed inclusive of particles-dry matter > 8 mm (peNDF > 8). Extensive research data, comprising a wide range of feeding conditions (n = 64 studies and 257 different dietary treatments), were used to parameterise the model, while statistical modelling was used to account for the inter- and intra-experiment variation as well as to derive the model estimates. Physiological thresholds and 's

Matching plant and animal processes to alter nutrient supply in strip-grazed cattle: timing of herbage and fasting allocation.

This work aimed to assess the impact of timing of herbage allocation and fasting on patterns of ingestive behavior, herbage intake, ruminal fermentation, nutrient flow to the duodenum, and site and extent of digestion. Treatments were daily herbage allocation in the afternoon (1500 h, AHA), morning (0800 h, MHA), AHA after 20 h of fasting (AHAF), and MHA after 20 h of fasting (MHAF). Four ruminally and duodenally fistulated heifers (279 +/- 99 kg of BW) individually strip-grazed wheat pastures in a Latin-square design. Eating, rumination, and idling behavior were recorded every 2 min, and bite

Flow paths of plant tissue residues and digesta through gastrointestinal segments in Spanish goats and methodological considerations.

A sequence of eight twice-daily meals, each marked with different rare earth elements, was fed to 24 Spanish goats (BW = 20.6 +/- 1.94 kg) to produce meal-based profiles of rare earth markers within segments of the gastrointestinal digesta on subsequent slaughter. Accumulative mean residence time and time delay of rare earths and segmental and accumulative mean residence times of indigestible NDF (IDF) were estimated for each sampled segment. Diets consisted of ad libitum access to bermudagrass hay with a limit feeding of one of four supplements: 1) minerals (basal, B); 2) B + energy (E); 3) B

Yeast culture supplementation prevented milk fat depression by a short-term dietary challenge with fermentable starch.

Effects of yeast culture on responses to a fermentable starch challenge were evaluated in an experiment with a crossover arrangement of treatments for yeast culture supplementation with 28-d periods and a fermentable starch challenge on the last 2 d of each 28-d period as a split plot within period. Eight ruminally cannulated, midlactation, multiparous Holstein cows (96 +/- 14 d in milk) were randomly assigned to treatment sequence. Treatments were yeast culture or control (mix of dry ground corn and soybean meal), top-dressed at 56 g per head per day throughout each period. Diets containing d

Immunolocalization and immunoexpression levels of sibling peptides nesfatin-1 and ghrelin, and their potentially shared receptor in the gastrointestinal tract of Holstein-Friesian bulls.

This study investigates the localization and immunoexpression levels of nesfatin-1 and ghrelin - two metabolically active peptides - and their putative shared receptor, growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR), across the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of Holstein-Friesian bulls. Recognized for their opposing roles in energy balance, nesfatin-1 and ghrelin are considered "sibling peptides" due to their complementary physiological functions and origin within the gastrointestinal system. The investigation encompassed both immature (calves) and mature (adult) cattle to assess developmental varia

Vegetable Leaf Fermentation Improves Nutritional Quality of Sheep Feed, Enhancing Growth Performance and Intestinal Health.

The utilization of proper fermentation techniques is a widely recognized, efficacious approach in animal husbandry for enhancing the feed quality. However, research on vegetable waste, particularly that of roots, stems, leaves, fruits, and peels, has been rarely reported. To this end, the present study was carried out to examine the impact of vegetable leaf fermentation on growth performance, immune function, antioxidant levels, intestinal morphology, and microbial composition in sheep. Fifty-four male sheep (Oula) with an average age of 6 months and an average body weight of (21.53 ± 2.03) kg

Spatial profiles of the bacterial microbiota throughout the gastrointestinal tract of dairy goats.

The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is stationed by a dynamic and complex microbial community with functions in digestion, metabolism, immunomodulation, and reproduction. However, there is relatively little research on the composition and function of microorganisms in different GIT segments in dairy goats. Herein, 80 chyme samples were taken from ten GIT sites of eight Xinong Saanen dairy goats and then analyzed and identified the microbial composition via 16S rRNA V1-V9 amplicon sequencing. A total of 6669 different operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were clustered, and 187 OTUs were shared by t

Molecular Characterization, Expression Profiles of SMAD4, SMAD5 and SMAD7 Genes and Lack of Association with Litter Size in Tibetan Sheep.

SMAD4, SMAD5 and SMAD7 belonging to the transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) superfamily are indispensable for oocyte formation and development, ovarian organogenesis and folliculogenesis. However, only a few studies have investigated the characteristics of SMAD4, SMAD5 and SMAD7 in Tibetan sheep and the effect of their polymorphism on litter size. In this study, we examined the expression of SMAD4, SMAD5 and SMAD7 in 13 tissues of Tibetan sheep by reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Further, cDNA of these genes was cloned, sequenced and subjected to bioinformatics an

Bacterial communities in the gastrointestinal tract segments of helminth-resistant and helminth-susceptible sheep.

BACKGROUND: Helminth parasitism is a world-wide problem in livestock industries, with major impacts on health, welfare and productivity. The role of the gut microbiota in host-helminth interactions in ruminants has been extensively examined and the present study added to this body of knowledge by assessing the effects of resistance and susceptibility to helminth infection in the gastro-intestinal tract (GIT). Australian Sheep Breeding Values (ASBVs) for faecal egg count (FEC) were used to select the 10 highly helminth-susceptible (High-FEC) and 10 highly helminth-resistant (Low-FEC) sheep. FEC

A review of vitamin D and its importance to the health of dairy cattle.

This Research Reflection short review will discuss vitamin D metabolism, its role in nutrition, disease prevention, and welfare of dairy cattle, as well as its toxicity. Vitamin D is an important fat-soluble vitamin. However, some researchers regard it as a hormone due to its function in the organism. Its role is not limited just to Ca homoeostasis and bone metabolism but is also associated with immunity. In dairy cattle it is known for preventing milk fever. Cows can acquire vitamin D in many ways for example through feed, parenteral injections or through UVB irradiation from the sun or artif

Molecular Characterization and Expression of SPP1, LAP3 and LCORL and Their Association with Growth Traits in Sheep.

The SPP1, LAP3, and LCORL are located on chromosome 6 of sheep and a domain of 36.15-38.56 Mb, which plays an essential role in tissue and embryonic growth. In this study, we cloned the complete coding sequences of SPP1 and partial coding regions of LAP3 and LCORL from Hu sheep (Gansu Province, China) and analyzed their genomic structures. The RT-qPCR showed that the three genes were expressed widely in the different tissues of Hu sheep. The SPP1 expression was significantly higher in the kidney (p < 0.01) and LAP3 expression was significantly higher in the spleen, lung, kidney, and duodenum t

Chronic oral administration of minocycline to sheep with ovine CLN6 neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis maintains pharmacological concentrations in the brain but does not suppress neuroinflammation or disease progression.

BACKGROUND: The neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs; or Batten disease) are fatal inherited human neurodegenerative diseases affecting an estimated 1:12,500 live births worldwide. They are caused by mutations in at least 11 different genes. Currently, there are no effective treatments. Progress into understanding pathogenesis and possible therapies depends on studying animal models. The most studied animals are the CLN6 South Hampshire sheep, in which the course of neuropathology closely follows that in affected children. Neurodegeneration, a hallmark of the disease, has been linked to neuroi
