INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: One of the problems with total ossicular replacement prostheses is their stability. Prosthesis dislocations and extrusions are common in middle ear surgery. This is due to variations in endo-tympanic pressure as well as design defects. The design of this new prosthesis reduces this problem by being joined directly to the malleus handle. The aim of this study is to confirm adequate acoustic-mechanical behaviour in fresh cadaver middle ear of a new total ossicular replacement prosthesis, designed using the finite elements method.
METHODS: Using the doppler vibromete

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The performance of an ossicular replacement prosthesis (ORP) is influenced by its alignment and appropriate tension between the tympanic membrane and the stapes footplate. A novel ORP with a flexible element that potentially allows for length adjustment in situ is presented and tested for acoustic performance.
STUDY DESIGN: Laser Doppler vibrometry in fresh human cadaveric temporal bones was used to test the acoustic performance of the adjustable ORP relative to standard prostheses used for ossiculoplasty.
METHODS: The three-dimensional (3D) velocity of the stapes post

INTRODUCTION: There are many ways of presenting the treatment's results for otosclerosis. Because of loss of the uniform standard, it is impossible to compare these results between various health centres. But the most important is, which way of presenting seems to be the best.
AIM: The aim of the study was to propose a scheme of presenting the treatment's results for otosclerosis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In order to devise method, medical documentation of 81 patients, treated for otosclerosis in Otolaryngological and Oncological Laryngology Clinic with Audiology and Phoniatrics Department, was

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To compare short-term hearing results in patients undergoing laser stapedotomy for primary otosclerosis using either the flexible potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) or CO(2) laser fiber.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective nonrandomized clinical study at a tertiary referral center.
METHODS: Two hundred fourteen patients undergoing 214 stapedotomies for otosclerotic stapes fixation were enrolled in this study from January 2008 to January 2010. Comparative analyses were made between a group of 107 patients who underwent stapedotomy with the flexible KTP laser fiber and 107 patients

Stapedotomy is primarily performed to treat hearing loss secondary to otospongiosis, although some patients find that the accompanying tinnitus is more bothersome than the hearing loss. We prospectively studied 23 consecutive patients with tinnitus secondary to otospongiosis who had undergone stapedotomy, and we compared their pre- and postoperative medical and audiologic findings. Patients' annoyance with their tinnitus was quantified by means of a visual analog scale, and their air-conduction thresholds were determined by measurements of a 4-frequency pure-tone average (0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz)

OBJECTIVE: To compare ultrastructure of the chorda tympani nerve by light and electron microscopy in patients with otosclerosis and chronic suppurative otitis media.
STUDY DESIGN: Comparative prospective study.
SETTING: Tertiary care, referral medical center.
PATIENTS: The tympanic segments of chorda tympani nerves were collected for ultrastructural investigation in 20 cases with chronic suppurative otitis media and 10 cases with otosclerosis that underwent middle ear surgery.
RESULTS: Histopathologic examinations of the suppurative group showed that unmyelinated fibers were almost totally

OBJECTIVE: The study goal was to analyze long-term hearing results and factors likely to affect outcome after ossicular reconstruction in patients with tympanosclerosis, particularly tympanosclerotic stapes fixation.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of the past 10 years. The short- and long-term (up to 9(1/2) years) hearing results of first-stage and second-stage operations for middle ear tympanosclerosis in 203 consecutive patients, performed in a tertiary referral otologic private practice, are presented. There were 160 tympanoplasties and 43 tympanoplasties with mastoidec

The short-term and long-term results of stapedectomy for eliminating the conductive element and improving the hearing in patients with otosclerosis are highly satisfactory all over the world. The delayed sensorineural hearing loss which continues after successful stapedectomy may be due to the operation itself or due to the natural history of the disease. The study was conducted on 80 patients with unilateral stapedectomy with a minimal follow-up period of 1 year. We found that bone conduction values at each frequency in operated ears were stable with marked improvement at 2,000 Hz, on the oth

UNLABELLED: Osseous atresia and chronic otitis media are diseases benefit with middle ear implants. Surgery for atresia is technically complicated, has significant number of complications and functional results are often poor. The osseointegrated hearing aids are an alternative. They provide a very good functional gain, but have many problems with the skin and osseointegration. In chronic otitis media, the ossiculoplasty solved partially the hearing problem. Unfortunately in some cases of otitis media and in open cavities fitted with conventional hearing aids the gain is unsatisfactory.
AIM:

OBJECTIVE: Stapediovestibular luxations are rare lesions that are most commonly caused by direct, penetrating trauma to the external ear canal. In this type of ossicular dislocation, disruption of the annular ligament or footplate fracture may lead to a perilymphatic fistula (PLF) presenting with cochleovestibular symptoms including (progressive) sensorineural hearing loss, tinnitus, and vestibular symptoms. The objective of this article is to define the optimal treatment of stapediovestibular luxations and review the literature on this topic.
PATIENT: We present a case of internal stapediove

OBJECTIVE: Compare hearing benefit of incus preservation in primary cholesteatoma surgery versus cartilage-myringostapediopexy.
METHODS: Prospective cohort study in a tertiary referral center. Tympanoplasty utilizing cartilage or other grafts, with or without intact incus was performed in 195 ears (187 children) with intact stapes. Outcome measures were pre and post-operative four-tone air conduction (AC) threshold (0.5, 1, 2, 4 kHz) and proportion with normal hearing (AC ≤ 30 dB HL) at 12 months.
RESULTS: Ears with intact ossicles had better post-operative AC thresholds than those with incu

OBJECTIVE: To test the feasibility of measuring fine temporal bone structures using a newly established cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) system.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six formalin-fixed human cadaver temporal bones were imaged using a high-resolution CBCT system that has 900 frames and copper + aluminum filtration. Fine temporal bone structures, including those of the facial nerve canal and vestibular structures, were identified and measured.
RESULTS: The fine structures of the middle ear, including the tympanic membrane, tendon of the tensor tympani, cochleariform process of the semica

Objectives: Incomplete partition type III is a rare malformation of the inner ear characterized by the absence of the modiolus, fixation of the stapes, and significant communication between the cochlea and the internal auditory canal (IAC). During cochlear implant (CI) surgery, there is a risk that the electrode array may enter the IAC, resulting in non-specific stimulation of auditory neurons or other nerve fibers inside the IAC. In this study, we present our experience with CI surgery in patients with incomplete partition type III and report the types of devices utilized. Methods: A retrospe
