Compounds belonging to the group of 5-substituted 4-(1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl) benzene-1,3-diols exhibit a broad spectrum of biological activity, including antibacterial, antifungal, and anticancer properties. The mechanism of the antifungal activity of compounds from this group has not been described to date. Among the large group of 5-substituted 4-(1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl) benzene-1,3-diol derivatives, the compound 4-(5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-yl) benzene-1,3-diol, abbreviated as C1, was revealed to be one of the most active agents against pathogenic fungi, simultaneously with the lowest toxi

PURPOSE: Various antifungal agents both topical and systemic have been introduced into clinical practice for effectively treating dermatophytic conditions. Dermatophytosis is the infection of keratinised tissues caused by fungal species of genera Trichophyton, Epidermophyton and Microsporum, commonly known as dermatophytes affecting 20-25% of the world's population. The present study aims at determining the susceptibility patterns of dermatophyte species recovered from superficial mycoses of human patients in Himachal Pradesh to antifungal agents; itraconazole, terbinafine and ketoconazole. In diabetic patients, mycotic infections may increase the risk of developing diabetic foot syndrome. However, little data are available on the prevalence of fungal foot infections in patients with diabetes. In a first study published using data obtained during a conference attended by patients with long-term diabetes mellitus type 1 (DM1), 78/95 patients (82.1%) showed probable pedal fungal infections, of which 84.6% (66/78) were mycologically confirmed by direct microscopy and/or culture. The dermatophyte Trichophyton rubrum was the most common (69.2% of isolates). Significant correlation was

BACKGROUND: Dermatophytes are common and cause important human fungal infections in many parts of the world, including Lebanon. The prevalence of these fungi, however, tends to vary with time and geographic location. In our region, studies on the prevalence of dermatophytoses and the distribution of the various dermatophyte species involved are rare. In Lebanon, only one study was published on this subject over the last forty years.
OBJECTIVES: This study was undertaken to shed light on the types and prevalence of dermatophytes recovered at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AU

Several chemically modified tetracycline analogs (CMTs), which were chemically modified to eliminate their antibacterial efficacy, were unexpectedly found to have antifungal properties. Of 10 CMTs screened in vitro, all exhibited antifungal activities, although their efficacies varied. Among these compounds, CMT-315, -3, and -308 were found to be the most potent as antifungal agents. The MICs of CMT-3 against 47 strains of fungi in vitro were determined by using amphotericin B (AMB) and doxycycline as positive and negative controls, respectively. The MICs of CMT-3 were generally found to be be

Onychomycosis is found more frequently in the elderly, and in more males than females. Onychomycosis of the toes is usually caused by dermatophytes, most commonly Trichophyton rubrum and T. mentagrophytes. The most common clinical presentations are distal and lateral subungual onychomycosis (which usually affects the great/first toe) and white superficial onychomycosis (which generally involves the third/fourth toes). Only about 50% of all abnormal-appearing nails are due to onychomycosis. In the remainder, trauma to the nail, psoriasis and conditions such as lichen planus should be considered

In superficial tinea and pityriasis versicolor, the causative fungi are for the most part confined to the stratum corneum which is barely reached by leukocytes. Therefore, a role of non-cellular components in the epidermal antifungal defence was suggested. To investigate the presence of such factors in these infections, the expression of human beta defensins 2 and 3 (hBD-2, hBD-3), RNase 7, psoriasin, toll-like receptors 2, 4 and 9 (TLR2, TLR4 and TLR9) and dectin 2 was analysed by use of immunostainings in skin biopsies. We found that hBD2, hBD3, psoriasin, RNase7, TLR2 and TLR4 were signific

BACKGROUND: Dermatophytosis is a common problem across the globe that is caused by a group of closely related fungi known as the dermatophytes that can invade keratinized tissues. It is a usual refractory infection and deleteriously affects the quality of life of humans. Despite the common presence of dermatophytes on the human host, research evidence in this area is limited.
OBJECTIVE: Aimed to assess the mycological profile and its associated factors among patients suspected of dermatophytosis at Bisidimo Hospital, Eastern Ethiopia, from March to October 2021.
METHODS: A cross-sectional st

Cutaneous mycoses, particularly tinea pedis caused by Trichophyton rubrum, are commonly known infections in humans. They are still considered as a major public health problem worldwide affecting the quality of life due to prolonged period of treatment and development of drug resistance, which leads to recurrence of infections. The objective of our study was to assess the effectiveness of miconazole in the presence and absence of urea, as a penetration enhancer, against T. rubrum and to formulate both of them in a water-soluble film to be applied topically for the purpose of treating tinea pedi

BACKGROUND: During the last decades, the number of people suffering from dermatophytoses has seriously increased, mainly due to the development of resistant strains of microorganisms to a range of formally efficient antibiotics. Polyscias fulva, a medium size tree which grows in the West Region of Cameroon is traditionally used for local application against dermatoses and orally against venereal infections. The dichloromethane-methanol (1:1 v/v) extract from the stem bark of Polyscias fulva was evaluated for its in vitro and in vivo antifungal activities.
METHODS: The plant extract was prepar

During the mycological analysis of skin and nail samples taken from patients with onychomycosis and tineas in Assiut city, it is interesting to report that yeast fungi were the main causal agents being cultured from 45.79% of total cases. In general, 21 species of yeast were isolated. Some of these are reported for the first time from clinical specimens. From the literature available up-to-date around the world, this study reports for the first time Saccharomycopsis fibuligera as the causal agent of four clinical cases: two onychomycoses, one tinea capitis and one tinea amiantacea. Also, it is

OBJECTIVE: Our group and others have shown that serial intra-lesional injections of common warts with skin testing reagents such as Candida, mumps and Trichophyton are effective in regressing injected and non-injected warts. Anti-HPV T-cell responses appear to be induced. The goal of this study was to understand the mechanisms of how Candida skin testing reagent enhances immune responses.
METHODS: The following immunological features were studied to understand how Candida induces immune responses in healthy subjects: (1) proliferative capacity of T-cells upon exposure to Candida through monoc

Despite advancements in antifungal therapies, the development of resistance to conventional drugs has compromised treatment outcomes, creating an urgent need for novel therapeutic approaches. Andrographolide, a key bioactive compound from Andrographis paniculata, has demonstrated broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. However, its antifungal potential, particularly against clinically relevant fungi, remains underexplored. Amphotericin B, a classic antifungal drug, is widely used for severe fungal infections, but limited by its toxicity at higher doses. Combination therapy has emerged as a prom
