OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study is to explore the expression levels of inflammatory cytokines in patients with cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL), and to assess the correlation between inflammatory cytokines and clinical/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of the patients.
METHODS: We recruited 54 patients with CADASIL and 28 healthy controls and detected the expression levels of the following inflammatory cytokines in peripheral blood: interferon (IFN)-γ, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, TNF-β, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-2,

Long-term outcomes are difficult to predict after paediatric traumatic brain injury. The presence or absence of focal brain injuries often do not explain cognitive, emotional and behavioural disabilities that are common and disabling. In adults, traumatic brain injury produces progressive brain atrophy that can be accurately measured and is associated with cognitive decline. However, the effect of paediatric traumatic brain injury on brain volumes is more challenging to measure because of its interaction with normal brain development. Here we report a robust approach to the individualized esti

Introduction: There is a growing awareness about the noxious effects of the 2019 Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic on the mental health of the elderly. However, there is limited information from clinically driven research. The objectives of the present study were to examine the magnitude of psychiatric symptoms and to determine their association with caregiver distress, in a cross-section of community-dwelling older adults and a subsample of aging adults with Down syndrome (DS) attending a psychogeriatric service in São Paulo, Brazil. Method: Telephone-based interviews and electronically

Tortoise Picornavirus (ToPV) commonly known as Virus "X" was recently discovered in juvenile European tortoises suffering from soft carapace and plastron as well as kidney disease. Therefore, this virus was a potential candidate to be a causative agent for these disease patterns. Spur thighed tortoises (Testudo graeca) seemed to be more susceptible to establish clinical symptoms than other European species like T. hermanni. Thus this trial investigated the role of ToPV in the described syndrome. Two groups of juvenile European tortoises (T. graeca and T.hermanni) each of 10 animals, were cloac

BACKGROUND: Prodromal Neurodegenerative Disease (ND) due to tauopathies such as Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and Synucleinopathies (SN) such as Parkinson's Disease (PD) and Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) present subtly. Although ND are considered cognitive disorders, in fact ND present with behavioral and even medical symptomatology years to decades prior to the onset of cognitive changes. Recognizing prodromal ND syndromes is a public health priority because ND is common, disabling and expensive. Diagnosing prodromal ND in real world clinical settings is challenging because ND of the same pathol

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) is an orphan autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder caused by the amplification of a nucleic acids triplet repeat. It is characterised by core symptoms of chorea, progressive dementia and psychiatric manifestations such as depression, irritability, apathy and psychosis. In current clinical practice, drugs exist that seem to improve symptoms for HD patients. However, their effectiveness has not been fully measured.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of the available interventions for the symptomatic treatment of HD.

Virusencephalitis is characterised by clinical symptoms of a parenchymatous inflammation. In addition, early mental status changes often occur as a result of virusencephalitis, beside focal neurological deficiencies, epileptic seizures, cerebral compression, even coma. Other pathological manifestations of virusencephalitis are disturbances of the neurohumoral and the endocrine system, which are often recognised and treated too late. This case report describes symptoms, treatment, and complications of a 76 year old female in-patient, who was diagnosed with virusencephalitis. The number of lymph

Magnesium is an essential cofactor for many enzymatic reactions, especially those involved in energy metabolism. Deficits of magnesium are prevalent due to inadequate intake or malabsorption and due to the renal loss of magnesium that occurs in certain disease states (alcoholism, diabetes) and with drug therapy (diuretics, aminoglycosides, cisplatin, digoxin, cyclosporin, amphotericin B). Protracted deficits of magnesium in humans and animals result in neurological disturbances, including hyperexcitability, convulsions and various psychiatric symptoms ranging from apathy to psychosis, some of

BACKGROUND: Supporting ageing in place, quality of life and activity engagement are public health priorities for people living with dementia, but little is known about the needs and experiences of community-dwelling people with rarer forms of dementia with lesser known symptoms. Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a rare form of dementia usually caused by Alzheimer's disease but which is characterised by diminished visual processing (rather than a dominant memory problem), which poses challenges for maintaining independence and accessing appropriate support.
METHODS: This study used a compara

BACKGROUND: Interventions and care that can evoke positive emotions and reduce apathy or agitation are important for people with dementia. In recent years, socially assistive robots used for better dementia care have been found to be feasible. However, the immediate responses of people with dementia when they are given multiple sensory modalities from socially assistive robots have not yet been sufficiently elucidated.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to quantitatively examine the immediate emotional responses of people with dementia to stimuli presented by socially assistive robots using facial e

The behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) is related to a variety of social misbehaviors, including criminal behavior (CB) due to deep changes in cognition, behavior, and personality. Recent work suggests that impairment in emotional processing, along with disinhibition, constitutes the necessary elements for CB in bvFTD. However, the underlying neurobiological mechanisms are still unclear. Therefore, we aim at investigating structural and functional brain changes related to CB in bvFTD using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with the German Consortium for Frontotemporal Lobar D

BACKGROUND: Chicken meat production has expanded considerably on a global scale due to its ease of production compared to other species. As a result, the prevalence of avian viruses has grown. Chicken astrovirus (CAstV), an RNA virus with roughly 7 kb in length that is disseminated globally and exhibits both horizontal and vertical transmission, is one of the most important enteric pathogenic avian viruses. CAstV and some enteric viruses' infections causes significant economic losses because they are associated with high mortality in chickens. CAstV cause a variety of pathologic changes such a

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive form of dementia marked by cognitive and memory deficits, estimated to affect ∼5.7 million Americans and account for ∼$277 billion in medical costs in 2018. Depression is one of the most common neuropsychiatric disorders that accompanies AD, appearing in up to 50% of patients. AD and Depression commonly occur together with overlapped symptoms (depressed mood, anxiety, apathy, and cognitive deficits.) and pose diagnostic challenges early in the clinical presentation. Understanding their relationship is critical for advancing treatment strategies, but th

Impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease are common neuropsychiatric complications associated with dopamine replacement therapy. Some patients treated with dopamine agonists develop pathological behaviours, such as gambling, compulsive eating, shopping, or disinhibited sexual behaviours, which can have a severe impact on their lives and that of their families. In this study we investigated whether hypersensitivity to reward might contribute to these pathological behaviours and how this is influenced by dopaminergic medication. We asked participants to shift their gaze to a visual targe

We identified in a cohort of patients with frontotemporal dementia (n = 481) or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (n = 147), 10 index patients carrying a TBK1 loss of function mutation reducing TBK1 expression by 50%. Here, we describe the clinical and pathological characteristics of the 10 index patients and six of their affected relatives carrying a TBK1 mutation. Six TBK1 carriers were diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, seven with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, one with both clinical phenotypes and two with dementia unspecified. The mean age at onset of all 16 TBK1 carriers was 62.1 ± 8.9

UNLABELLED: Loss of motivation and frontal dysfunction are frequent in old people. Motivation refers to what drives acts and relationships. The loss of motivation has some spécific characteristics from depression: loss of sens of meaning, loss of commitment for others, disinterest for daily activities. The frontal function is related to speed of acting, emotional system, anticipating of the future. All these points are altered in demotivated patients. For these reasons we assayed to analyse the possible links between loss of motivation and frontal dysfunctions.
METHODS: The focus of this assa

Based on recent quantitative EEG findings of increased slow activity in negative schizophrenia indicating organicity, it was hypothesized that neuroleptics decreasing delta/theta activity should be beneficial for schizophrenics with predominantly negative symptoms. Thus, a double-blind, clinical, psychometric and neurophysiological study was carried out in 40 hospitalized patients with unproductive schizophrenia (mean age: 31 years; ICD diagnoses: 295.0, 295.1 and 295.6) who were treated randomly either with the benzamide amisulpride (AMI; n = 19) or low doses of fluphenazine (FLU; n = 21). BACKGROUND: Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are common across the continuum of cognitive impairment and represent a major source of distress for family caregivers. Because NPS often co-occur in real-world care settings, it remains clinically important to determine whether caregiver burden is more closely related to cumulative NPS burden or to specific symptom domains.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the prevalence and distribution of NPS and to examine the associations of Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) total score, symptom count, caregiver-distress total score, and individual NPI do

Background and Objectives: Functional decline is a major determinant of disability, caregiver burden, and loss of independence in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). Although bvFTD is characterized by early and rapidly progressive deterioration in everyday functioning, the multimodal contributors associated with longitudinal functional change remain insufficiently understood. The present study aimed to identify the strongest cognitive, behavioral, personality, and neuroimaging correlates of longitudinal functional deterioration in bvFTD using an integrated multimodal framework

IMPORTANCE: Early-onset dementia, presenting in individuals younger than 65 years, is a diagnosis with significant social and financial implications. The early-onset form of dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is poorly understood.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate clinical features that distinguish early-onset DLB (onset and diagnosis at age <65 years) from late-onset DLB (onset at age ≥65 years) and from early-onset Alzheimer disease (AD) dementia.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This is a retrospective case-control study on patients with pathologically confirmed DLB or AD enrolled in the National
