Biofilm-associated microbial communities on microplastics in rural and urban aquatic environments of Tamil Nadu, India: Functional characterization and antibiotic resistance.

Microplastics (MPs) are persistent aquatic pollutants that provide substrates for microbial colonization and biofilm development. This study investigated the functional characteristics of MP-associated microbial communities across coastal, estuarine, and freshwater environments in Tamil Nadu, India, providing a comparative assessment of plastisphere functionality under varying levels of anthropogenic influence. A total of 615 MPs were collected from water and sediment samples, of which 279 particles (45.4%) exhibited visible biofilms and were selected for further analysis. Biofilm-associated M

Thiohalorhabdus methylotropha sp. nov., an extremely halophilic autotrophic methylotiotroph from hypersaline lakes.

So far, there have been no reports of trimethylamine (TMA)-utilizing extremely halophilic microorganisms in hypersaline habitats. Our aerobic enrichments at 4 M total Na+ with 5 mM TMA inoculated with surface sediments from hypersaline soda (at pH 9.5) or chloride-sulfate (at pH 7) lakes in southwestern Siberia were successful only for the latter. The initial enrichment included both bacteria and haloarchaea but only the bacterial component was able to grow as a pure culture with TMA. Strain Cl-TMA forms a new-species lineage within the genus Thiohalorhabdus which includes extremely halophilic

Ingredients for microbial life preserved in 3.5 billion-year-old fluid inclusions.

It is widely hypothesised that primeval life utilised small organic molecules as sources of carbon and energy. However, the presence of such primordial ingredients in early Earth habitats has not yet been demonstrated. Here we report the existence of indigenous organic molecules and gases in primary fluid inclusions in c. 3.5-billion-year-old barites (Dresser Formation, Pilbara Craton, Western Australia). The compounds identified (e.g., H2S, COS, CS2, CH4, acetic acid, organic (poly-)sulfanes, thiols) may have formed important substrates for purported ancestral sulfur and methanogenic metaboli

Design of Fungal Co-Cultivation Based on Comparative Metabolomics and Bioactivity for Discovery of Marine Fungal Agrochemicals.

Microbial co-cultivation is employed for awakening silent biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) to enhance chemical diversity. However, the selection of appropriate partners for co-cultivation remains a challenge. Furthermore, competitive interactions involving the suppression of BGCs or upregulation of known, functional metabolite(s) during co-cultivation efforts is also common. Herein, we performed an alternative approach for targeted selection of the best co-cultivation pair. Eight marine sediment-derived fungi were classified as strong or weak, based on their anti-phytopathogenic potency. The

Prevalence and pollution characteristics of antibiotic resistant genes in one high anthropogenically-impacted river.

The objectives of this study were to comprehensively investigate the occurrence, distribution, and mobility of antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) in the biofilm, water, and sediment from a section of the Weihe-river, in the northern Henan province, China. The abundances of nine ARGs belonging to four commonly used antibiotic classes (tetracyclines, sulfonamides, fluoroquinolones, and multidrug) and class 1 integron-integrase gene (intI1) were quantified. Sulfonamides gene (sulI) accounted for the highest percentage of detected ARGs in most sampling sites, including in water, biofilm, and sedime

Different circulation history of mercury in aquatic biota from King George Island of the Antarctic.

To trace the circulation history of aquatic bioavailable Hg in the Antarctic, the species and isotopic compositions of Hg in sediment, Archaeogastropoda (Agas), Neogastropoda (Ngas), and fish collected from King George Island were studied in detail. Positive mass independent fractionation (MIF) was observed and positively correlated with the percentages of methylmercury (MeHg%) in Agas and Ngas, suggesting an effect of MeHg accumulation during trophic transfer on MIF signatures. However, both the ratios of Δ199Hg/δ202Hg and Δ199Hg/Δ201Hg indicated different circulation histories of Hg in Agas,

Effects of sediment resuspension on the oxidation of acid-volatile sulfides and release of metals (iron, manganese, zinc) in Pescadero estuary (CA, USA).

Bar-built estuaries are unique ecosystems characterized by the presence of a sandbar barrier, which separates the estuary from the ocean for extended periods and can naturally reopen to the ocean with heavy rainfall and freshwater inflows. The physical effects associated with the transition from closed to open state, specifically water mixing and sediment resuspension, often indirectly worsen water quality conditions and are suspected to drive near-annual fish kills at the Pescadero estuary in northern California. The effects of sediment acid-volatile sulfide (AVS) oxidation, specifically oxyg

Diversity and seasonal distribution of ammonia-oxidizing archaea in the water column of a tropical estuary along the southeast Arabian Sea.

Diversity and distribution pattern of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) were studied across a salinity gradient in the water column of Cochin Estuary (CE), a tropical monsoonal estuary along the southeast Arabian Sea. The water column of CE was found to be nutrient rich with high bacterial (3.7-6.7 × 108 cells L-1) and archaeal abundance (1.9-4.5 × 108 cells L-1). Diversity and seasonal variation in the distribution pattern of AOA were studied using clone library analysis and Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). Clone library analysis of both the amoA and 16S rRNA gene sequences showe

Shifts in coastal sediment oxygenation cause pronounced changes in microbial community composition and associated metabolism.

BACKGROUND: A key characteristic of eutrophication in coastal seas is the expansion of hypoxic bottom waters, often referred to as 'dead zones'. One proposed remediation strategy for coastal dead zones in the Baltic Sea is to mix the water column using pump stations, circulating oxygenated water to the sea bottom. Although microbial metabolism in the sediment surface is recognized as key in regulating bulk chemical fluxes, it remains unknown how the microbial community and its metabolic processes are influenced by shifts in oxygen availability. Here, coastal Baltic Sea sediments sampled from o

Spatial and temporal trends and flow dynamics of glyphosate and other pesticides within an agricultural watershed in Argentina.

In the present study, we evaluated the spatial and temporal trends of current-use pesticides in surface water and sediments as well as their relationship with hydrological stream dynamics within the agricultural watershed of El Crespo stream (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina). We sampled 2 contrasting sites: site 1 (upstream), surrounded by agricultural lands, and site 2 (downstream), surrounded by natural grasslands. Most of the applied pesticides (glyphosate, 2,4-D, atrazine, tebuconazole, and imidacloprid) were detected at high frequencies in surface water samples at both sites. However, on

Kinetics of sulfate reduction and sulfide precipitation rates in sediments of a bar-built estuary (Pescadero, California).

The bar-built Pescadero Estuary in Northern California is a major fish rearing habitat, though recently threatened by near-annual fish kill events, which occur when the estuary transitions from closed to open state. The direct and indirect effects of hydrogen sulfide are suspected to play a role in these mortalities, but the spatial variability of hydrogen sulfide production and its link to fish kills remains poorly understood. Using flow-through reactors containing intact littoral sediment slices, we measured potential sulfate reduction rates, kinetic parameters of microbial sulfate reduction

A simulation study of inorganic sulfur cycling in the water level fluctuation zone of the Three Gorges Reservoir, China and the implications for mercury methylation.

The water level fluctuation zone (WLFZ) of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) in China experiences a drying and wetting rotation every year, and the water level induced redox variation may influence inorganic sulfur speciation and mercury methylation. In this work, a simulative flooding and drying experiment and a sulfate added flooding experiment were conducted to study this topic. The results showed that sulfate was reduced from the 10th d during the flooding period based on the detected sulfide in water and the increased elemental sulfur (S0) in sediment. Sulfate reduction and sulfide re-oxid

Sediment prokaryote communities in different sites of eutrophic Lake Taihu and their interactions with environmental factors.

To investigate the temporal variation of the sediment prokaryote communities and their relation with the rapid increase of algae population in Taihu, a shallow eutrophic freshwater Lake, water and surface sediments were sampled from seven sites in different stages of algal bloom. The physicochemical characterization revealed positive correlations among the nutrient (N, P) parameters in the water and sediments, as well as TN/TP ratio 30.79 in average in water and 0.13 in sediments, demonstrating that P content was the limit factor for bloom in Taihu and sediment was an important nutrient resour

Acetylcholinesterase in zebrafish embryos as a tool to identify neurotoxic effects in sediments.

In order to clarify the suitability of zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos for the detection of neurotoxic compounds, the acetylcholinesterase assay was adapted and validated with a series of priority pollutants listed as relevant for the European water policy (Aroclor 1254, 2,3-benzofuran, bisphenol A, chlorpyrifos, paraoxon-methyl, quinoline, and methyl mercury chloride) as well as acetonic extracts from three sediments of known contamination. The acute toxicities of the model substances and the sediment extracts were determined by means of the fish embryo test as specified in OECD TG 236, and c

20th century atmospheric deposition and acidification trends in lakes of the Sierra Nevada, California, USA.

We investigated multiple lines of evidence to determine if observed and paleo-reconstructed changes in acid neutralizing capacity (ANC) in Sierra Nevada lakes were the result of changes in 20th century atmospheric deposition. Spheroidal carbonaceous particles (SCPs) (indicator of anthropogenic atmospheric deposition) and biogenic silica and δ(13)C (productivity proxies) in lake sediments, nitrogen and sulfur emission inventories, climate variables, and long-term hydrochemistry records were compared to reconstructed ANC trends in Moat Lake. The initial decline in ANC at Moat Lake occurred betwe

Metagenomic profiles of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) between human impacted estuary and deep ocean sediments.

Knowledge of the origins and dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) is essential for understanding modern resistomes in the environment. The mechanisms of the dissemination of ARGs can be revealed through comparative studies on the metagenomic profiling of ARGs between relatively pristine and human-impacted environments. The deep ocean bed of the South China Sea (SCS) is considered to be largely devoid of anthropogenic impacts, while the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) in south China has been highly impacted by intensive human activities. Commonly used antibiotics (sulfamethazine, norfl

Adsorption and desorption of chlorpyrifos to soils and sediments.

Chlorpyrifos, one of the most widely used insecticides, has been detected in air, rain, marine sediments, surface waters, drinking water wells, and solid and liquid dietary samples collected from urban and rural areas. Its metabolite, TCP, has also been widely detected in urinary samples collected from people of various age groups. With a goal of elucidating the factors that control the environmental contamination, impact, persistence, and ecotoxicity of chlorpyrifos, we examine, in this review, the peer-reviewed literature relating to chlorpyrifos adsorption and desorption behavior in various

Speciation of arsenic (III) and arsenic (V) based on quenching of CdS quantum dots fluorescence using hybrid sequential injection-stopped flow injection gas-diffusion system.

A hybrid sequential injection-stopped flow injection system was developed for the speciation of arsenic based on the quenching of mercaptoacetic acid capped cadmium sulfide quantum dots (CdS-MAA QDs) fluorescence intensity. The analytical procedure involves the generation of arsine from As(III) by sodium borohydride in acetate buffer medium pH 6.0. The generated arsine (donor stream) diffuses across the PTFE membrane of the gas-diffusion unit into an acceptor stream and then interacts with CdS-MAA QDs. Total arsenic was determined after pre-reduction of As(V) to As(III) with 1% (m/v) mercaptoa
