BACKGROUND: Newborns with Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) often experience chronic intermittent hypoxemia/hypoventilation associated with airway obstruction. The heterogeneity of the severity of upper airway obstruction makes management a challenge; the optimal intervention in individual cases is not clear.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of surgical/nonsurgical interventions for PRS at two children's hospitals. Patient characteristics and outcomes were examined.
METHODS: The present retrospective chart review identified 139 patients with PRS born between 2000 and 2010. Demographic info

BACKGROUND: Alveolar ridge augmentations are challenging procedures in dental implantology, especially in esthetic zone. 3D alveolar defects can be treated by guided bone regeneration (GBR), distraction osteogenesis, or bone blocks. This study introduces a new technique for 3D-alveolar ridge augmentation by using L-shape autogenous symphyseal bone block.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess both horizontal and vertical alveolar bone augmentation for severe atrophied anterior maxilla and mandible, using an L- shape autogenous bone block harvested from the symphysis.

Arhinia, or congenital absence of the nose, is an exceedingly rare anomaly caused by pathogenic variants in the gene SMCHD1 . Arhinia exhibits unique reconstructive challenges, as the midface is deficient in skeletal and soft tissue structures. The authors present 2 related patients with arhinia who harbor a novel SMCHD1 gene variant and illustrate their surgical midface and nasal construction. Targeted sequencing was carried out on DNA samples from the 2 affected patients, 1 anosmic and 1 healthy parent, to identify variants in exons 3 to 13 of SMCHD1 . The affected patients and anosmic paren

Traumatic temporomandibular joint ankylosis (TMJA) is a common disease and disorder of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ); however, its pathogenesis has yet to be completely elucidated. In the authors' previous studies, the lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM) was confirmed to exert a function in distraction osteogenesis (DO) during the healing of a condylar fracture, which resulted in the formation of excess bone. The aim of the present study was to investigate alterations in the expression of any associated genes via an Affymetrix GeneChip method. The traumatic TMJA model was fabricated by a condyl

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of traumatic TMJ ankylosis remains unclear. This study aimed to verify the role of the lateral pterygoid muscle in the pathogenesis of traumatic temporomandibular joint (TMJ) bony ankylosis.
METHODS: Eight 6-month-old male sheep were used in this study. Bilateral TMJ osteotomies were performed to induce sagittal fractures of the mandibular condyle. The lateral one-fourth segment of the disc was removed to establish a model of TMJ bony ankylosis. Subsequently, the function of the left and right lateral pterygoid muscles was blocked (experimental group) or maintaine

BACKGROUND: Genu recurvatum is a debilitating deformity of the knee that can progress during growth and lead to significant deformity if left untreated. Recurvatum can be osseous, ligamentous, or mixed. Osseous genu recurvatum is most often due to asymmetrical growth arrest of the proximal tibial physis affecting primarily the tibial tubercle. Several methods have been described in the literature regarding the correction of this deformity; nevertheless, there is a paucity of knowledge of the correction of proximal tibial recurvatum using the Ilizarov technique.
METHODS: A retrospective chart

INTRODUCTION: Long-term results after orthopedic or surgical treatment of hemifacial microsomia (HFM) have shown a tendency toward recurrence of the facial asymmetry. However, the literature contains a number of successful case reports that show surprising changes in the morphology of the condyles. In addition, patients with similar mandibular asymmetries, treated early with surgery, have excellent long-term follow-ups, especially those who have little or no soft-tissue involvement, but only severe mandibular ramal deformities. The phenotypes of these cases are unexpectedly similar, with a con

BACKGROUND: The monobloc procedure has been criticized owing to its tendency for cerebrospinal fluid leak, relapse, infection, and incomplete ossification. Such risks have been decreased through gradual advancement of the monobloc via distraction osteogenesis. This cadaver study was undertaken to develop an endoscopic, ultrasonic monobloc osteotomy to further minimize risks and potentially improve outcomes.
METHODS: Three fresh, adult human cadavers were used in this study. Endoscopic ultrasonic monobloc osteotomy was completed in all cadavers with 3 incisions hidden in the hair-bearing scalp

The article introduces the hypothesis that intramuscular connective tissue, in particular the fascial layer known as the perimysium, may be capable of active contraction and consequently influence passive muscle stiffness, especially in tonic muscles. Passive muscle stiffness is also referred to as passive elasticity, passive muscular compliance, passive extensibility, resting tension, or passive muscle tone. Evidence for the hypothesis is based on five indications: (1) tonic muscles contain more perimysium and are therefore stiffer than phasic muscles; (2) the specific collagen arrangement of

Apert syndrome is characterized by hypertelorism, a negative canthal axis, and central midfacial hypoplasia, resulting in a biconcave face. Bipartition distraction partially corrects these facial anomalies. This study investigates limitations of bipartition distraction using linear, angular, and geometric morphometric analysis. Preoperative and postoperative three-dimensional computed tomographic craniofacial constructs of 10 patients with Apert syndrome (aged 12 to 21 years) were annotated with 98 landmarks. Twelve age-, sex, and ethnicity-matched normal skulls provided control data. Principa

BACKGROUND: Craniosynostosis is a complex disease once it involves deep anatomic perception, and a minor mistake during surgery can be fatal. The objective of this report is to present novel 3-dimensional-printed polyamide craniosynostosis models that can improve the understanding and treatment complex pathologies.
METHODS: The software InVesalius was used for segmentation of the anatomy image (from 3 patients between 6 and 9 months old). Afterward, the file was transferred to a 3-dimensional printing system and, with the use of an infrared laser, slices of powder PA 2200 were consecutively a

INTRODUCTION: Shunt-related craniosynostosis causing craniocerebral disproportion represents a particular complication of the treatment of hydrocephalus. When the modification of the shunt opening pressure does not improve the symptomatology, surgery for correction of craniocerebral disproportion is indicated. We present the results and advantages of the split bi-frontal bone technique that is a modification of the previous used frontal bone advancement technique.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 5 patients with iatrogenic craniosynostosis treated in our institution from 1995

Correction of valgus hindfoot deformity can be successfully achieved with arthrodesis of the subtalar and talonavicular joints through a single medial based incision. The advantages of medial double arthrodesis compared with the standard triple arthrodesis 2-incision approach include the absence of a lateral incision and a few degrees of residual mobility through the unfused calcaneocuboid joint (CCJ). The CCJ has often been noted to distract and decompress with the abduction correction achieved through medial double fusion. The primary goal of the present retrospective study was to identify t

Normal craniofacial growth is characterized by a different growth pattern of neuro- and viscerocranium. In craniofacial dysostosis (CFD) syndromes there is complex disturbance of this physiological growth pattern. Modern surgical management of CFD is staged with respect to the severity of the deformity, the age and the development of the patient. Early single stage management of anterior cranial vault deformity and midfacial retrusion in children affected by syndromic craniosynostosis is possible when anterior cranial vault remodelling is performed together with gradual Le Fort III midfacial a

BACKGROUND: Frontofacial monobloc advancement (FFMBA) is a powerful but high-risk procedure to correct both exorbitism and impaired airways of faciocraniosynostosis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: One hundred and five children with faciocraniosynostosis (mean 4.9 years, 7 months-14 years) were evaluated prospectively after FFMBA and quadruple internal distraction. The advancement was started at day 5 (0.5 mm/day). Mean follow-up was 61 months (maximum 10.5 years). Relapse was evaluated by the comparison between the evaluation at the time of removal of distractors and 6 months later.
RESULTS: Seventy-

The case report describes the multidisciplinary treatment of a 25-year-old male patient with a Class III malocclusion. Anterior and bilateral posterior crossbites were present. To correct the posterior crossbite a surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion was performed. The significant three dimensional skeletal discrepancy was solved in a second phase with a surgical advancement of the maxilla. Functional and aesthetic occlusion in an improved facial profile was achieved with an interdisciplinary treatment that included orthodontic treatment, maxillofacial and periodontal surgery, and dir

Orthodontics is the planned movement of teeth that can be carried thanks to the provoked resorption and apposition of osseous tissue. From the standpoint of the periodontium orthodontists should always be cognizant of the risk of iatrogenically weakening soft tissue status but at the same time they should consider that an improved character of the periodontium is one of the benefits that can be derived from mechano-therapy. These periodontal improvements, in the broadest sense of the term, can result from traditional overall therapy as well as treatment aimed solely at a local condition requir

The aim of this study is to evaluate the long-term results of management of fibular hemimelia (Achterman-Kalamchi type-II) using the Ilizarov method. We reviewed 157 consecutive patients (180 limb segments) with a mean follow-up period of 10.7 years (1.2-21 years). The results were favorable. Although, this type of management is technically demanding and entails a lengthy procedure with many complications anticipated, the Ilizarov lengthening after limb reconstruction is still an option for management of this type of limb deficiency.
