The Electrophysiological Findings in Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 6: Evidence From 24 Patients.

PURPOSE: Peripheral neuropathy has been reported commonly in several spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) types. To date, there is a lack of robust evidence for neuropathy or neuronopathy in SCA type 6 (SCA6). Here, we aim to evaluate the presence of neuropathy or neuronopathy in a cohort of SCA6 patients. METHODS: Twenty-four individuals with genetically confirmed SCA6 underwent detailed neurophysiological assessment. This included nerve conduction studies, and in some, cutaneous silent periods, blink reflexes, tilt table tests, quantitative sudomotor axon reflex tests, and somatosensory (median and

Pembrolizumab-Induced Isolated Cranial Neuropathy: A Rare Case Report and Review of Literature.

Introduction: Anti-PD1 agents are widely used in the treatment of solid tumors. This has prompted the recognition of a class of immune-related adverse events (irAEs), due to the activation of autoimmune T-cells. Pembrolizumab is an anti-PD1 agent, which has been related to an increased risk of various neurological irAE (n-irAEs). Here, we present a rare case of pembrolizumab-induced neuropathy of cranial nerves. Case Report: A 72-year-old patient was diagnosed with a lung adenocarcinoma in February 2018 (EGFR-, ALK-, and PDL1 90%). According to the molecular profile, pembrolizumab was started.

Equine Facial Action Coding System for determination of pain-related facial responses in videos of horses.

During the last decade, a number of pain assessment tools based on facial expressions have been developed for horses. While all tools focus on moveable facial muscles related to the ears, eyes, nostrils, lips, and chin, results are difficult to compare due to differences in the research conditions, descriptions and methodologies. We used a Facial Action Coding System (FACS) modified for horses (EquiFACS) to code and analyse video recordings of acute short-term experimental pain (n = 6) and clinical cases expected to be in pain or without pain (n = 21). Statistical methods for analyses were a f

Intra-arterial Modulation of the Trigeminal Nerve Ganglion in Patients with Refractory Trigeminal Neuralgia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Nerves and nerve ganglions are supplied by segmental arteries and the vasa nervorum, but the intra-arterial route has not been used for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. We present the results of intra-arterial delivery of medication for modulating trigeminal nerve ganglion function in patients with refractory trigeminal neuralgia. METHODS: We administered intra-arterial lidocaine in doses up to 50 mg in the middle meningeal artery territory adjacent to the arterial branch that supplies the trigeminal nerve ganglion. We performed electrophysiologic monitoring to seri

Facial paralysis induced by ear inoculation of herpes simplex virus in rat.

OBJECTIVE: Bell's palsy is caused by the reactivation of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). Using Balb/c mice inoculated with the KOS strain of HSV-1, we previously developed an animal disease model that simulated mild Bell's palsy. The current study developed an animal disease model of more severe facial palsy than that seen in the mouse model. METHODS: Three-week-old female Wister rats weighing 60-80g were inoculated on the auricle with HSV-1 and acyclovir was administered intraperitoneally to deactivate the infected HSV-1. Instead of HSV-1, phosphate-buffered saline was used for inoculat

Emerging Object Representations in the Visual System Predict Reaction Times for Categorization.

Recognizing an object takes just a fraction of a second, less than the blink of an eye. Applying multivariate pattern analysis, or "brain decoding", methods to magnetoencephalography (MEG) data has allowed researchers to characterize, in high temporal resolution, the emerging representation of object categories that underlie our capacity for rapid recognition. Shortly after stimulus onset, object exemplars cluster by category in a high-dimensional activation space in the brain. In this emerging activation space, the decodability of exemplar category varies over time, reflecting the brain's tra

Psychosomatics and psychopathology: looking up and down from the brain.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a role in a wide range of somatic and mental diseases. Using a model of neurovisceral integration, this article describes how autonomic imbalance and decreased parasympathetic tone in particular may be the final common pathway linking negative affective states and conditions to ill health. The central nervous system (CNS) network that regulates autonomic balance (central autonomic network, CAN) is closely related and partially overlaps with networks serving executive, social, affective, attentional, and motivated behavior (anterior executive region, AER

[Palpable orbital subcutaneous masses in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy. MRI and neurophysiological study of multiple peripheral nerve swelling].

We report a 46-year-old woman with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) in whom swelling of the first branch of the trigeminal nerves in the bilateral orbits were observed as subcutaneous masses in the upper eyelids. The disease developed when the patient was 33 years old, and weakness of the four limbs, double vision, unilateral hypoglossal neuroparalysis, and unilateral facial paralysis frequently occurred during the course of the illness. On nerve conduction studies, conduction block was detected in the motor nerves. Steroid therapy and immunoglobulin treatment improved

Motoneuron adaptability to new motor tasks following two types of facial-facial anastomosis in cats.

The ability of the facial motor system to adapt to a new motor function was studied in alert cats after unilateral transection, 180 degrees rotation and suture of the zygomatic nerve, or transection and cross-anastomosis of the proximal stump of the buccal nerve to the distal stump of the zygomatic nerve. These procedures induced reinnervation of the orbicularis oculi (OO) muscle by different OO- or mouth-related facial motoneurons. Eyelid movements and the electromyographic activity of the OO muscle were recorded up to 1 year following the two types of anastomosis. Animals with a zygomatic ne
