PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The navicular bone lies at the apex of the deformity in severe talipes planovalgus with forefoot abductus, in the residual cavus of congenital talipes equinovarus, in certain cases of congenital convexity, and in certain types of neurological equinovarus. Resection of the navicular bone can be proposed to correct certain deformities.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This series included 15 feet operated on in 13 children from 1980 to 2003. The deformity to be corrected was a residual cavus after surgery for congenital talipes equinovarus (five feet), plantar and medial dislocation

Soft tissue loss in the dorsum of the hand resulting from trauma often involves the extensor mechanism due to its thin skin coverage. When such composite skin and extensor tendon defects occur, the wound could be reconstructed with an ipsilateral forearm venous flap with accompanying palmaris longus tendon. Eighteen dorsal finger defects in 12 patients underwent composite venous flap and tendon transfers in the acute stage. We used both Buck-Gram-cko and Tubiana's methods for objective functional assessments. With the former method, the average composite flexion, extension deficit, and total a

BACKGROUND: There is a growing interest concerning the understanding of and rehabilitation of the sagittal configuration of the cervical spine as a clinical outcome. However, the literature on the topic specific to conservative treatment outcomes of patients with chronic myofascial cervical pain syndrome (CMCPS) has not adequately addressed the relationship between cervical sagittal alignment and improved pain, disability and range of motion.
METHODS: A randomized controlled study with a 1-year follow-up. Here, 120 (76 males) patients with chronic CMCPS and defined cervical sagittal posture a

PURPOSE: To compare the effectiveness of nasoalveolar molding (NAM) in infants with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate presenting before and after 6 months of age and justify its use in older infants presenting for treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The university NAM protocol was followed for 150 patients who were included in the study. NAM was performed by 1 month of age (group I, n = 50), at 1 to 6 months of age (group II, n = 50), and at 6 months to 1 year of age (group III, n = 50). Seven linear anthropometric measurements were compared using dentofacial models.

BACKGROUND: Ankle sprains often result in ankle instability, which is most likely caused by damage to passive structures and neuromuscular impairment. Whole body vibration (WBV) is a neuromuscular training method improving those impaired neurologic parameters. The aim of this study is to compare the current gold standard functional treatment to functional treatment plus WBV in patients with acute unilateral unstable inversion ankle sprains.
METHODS/DESIGN: 60 patients, aged 18-40 years, presenting with an isolated, unilateral, acute unstable inversion ankle sprain will be included in this bic

BACKGROUND: Breast augmentation, post-mastectomy patients as well as some women with natural breast tissue, and lactating, women often experience discomfort in prone activities. Our study, for the first time, examines pain levels, mechanical force and peak pressure in natural, reconstructed and augmented breast tissues with and without a new orthosis designed for reduction of displacement, compression and loading forces through the breast tissue during prone activities.
METHODS: Twelve females with natural, lactating or augmented breast tissue, and cup-sizes C-F volunteered for the study. Pai

STUDY DESIGN: Case series design on a single subgroup of participants.
INTRODUCTION: Management of hypertonicity and resistance to passive movement (RTPM) in the upper extremity is an intractable problem for persons with stroke and the therapists who provide their care. Therapists have limited options for assessment and treatment of this condition which can profoundly limit functional performance and quality of life.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: To evaluate the effect of a 12-week dynamic progressive orthotic intervention in persons with chronic stroke exhibiting wrist flexion contracture who are r

BACKGROUND: Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuroradiculopathy (CIDP) is an autoimmune disease of the peripheral nervous system, causing demyelination and even axonal degeneration. In children, abnormal gait as a first sign of muscle weakness is a frequent reason to seek medical attention. Diagnosis is made on the basis of clinical characteristics, electromyography and nerve conduction studies, and elevated protein in cerebrospinal fluid.
AIMS: We present three new cases of CIDP. The literature was reviewed in order to obtain more information on presentation, outcome and treatment stra

Light therapy is a relatively novel modality in wound care. I used a light-emitting diode (LED) and superluminous diode (SLD) to deliver low-intensity laser light as an adjunctive treatment to a patient with a chronic diabetic foot ulcer. Standard treatment of conservative sharp debridement, off-loading, bioburden management, and advanced dressings was delivered in a WOC clinic setting. This combination of therapies resulted in closure of the neuropathic plantar ulcer within 8 weeks.

BACKGROUND: The majority of individuals with chronic stroke have residual upper extremity (UE) disability which they cite as their greatest barrier to recovery. Using orthoses, robotic devices, and functional electrical stimulation (FES) represent rehabilitation techniques that have demonstrated the ability to improve arm and hand function in the chronic stroke population, but individuals with more severe impairments are typically not eligible for these studies. The very few studies incorporating these techniques with the severely impaired population do not utilize volitional FES control or mo

BACKGROUND: Gait indices were developed to represent the magnitude of impairment extracted from a gait analysis with a single value. The Gillette Gait Index (GGI), and the Gait Deviation Index (GDI) are 2 widely used indices that represent gait impairment differently based on their statistical properties. Our purpose was to (1) report on the results of gait analysis for a broad spectrum of pediatric conditions using the GGI and GDI, and (2) identify the parameters that dominate impairment.
METHODS: A total of 1439 children with 13 different diagnoses with a complete, baseline gait analysis we

BACKGROUND: Upper limb orthoses are frequently prescribed for children with cerebral palsy (CP) who have muscle overactivity predominantly due to spasticity, with little evidence of long-term effectiveness. Clinical consensus is that orthoses help to preserve range of movement: nevertheless, they can be complex to construct, expensive, uncomfortable and require commitment from parents and children to wear. This protocol paper describes a randomised controlled trial to evaluate whether long-term use of rigid wrist/hand orthoses (WHO) in children with CP, combined with usual multidisciplinary ca

INTRODUCTION: Traction orthoses are thought to optimize recovery from intra-articular finger fractures by restoring joint space and allowing early motion. Evidence to date has, however, consisted only of case series.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: To compare swing traction versus no-traction management of complex fractures of proximal inter-phalangeal (PIP) finger joints. We hypothesized that there is no long-term (i.e. >12 month) difference between swing traction and no-traction (with or without surgical fixation) in terms of motion, pain, function, patient satisfaction, or treatment cost.
