Graduate Student Literature Review: Refining nutrient use efficiency in dairy farming through precision feeding practices.

Refining on-farm strategies targeting nutrient (Nut) use efficiency (KNut) and environmental load reductions is crucial to ensure sustainable and profitable livestock production. This review evaluates nutritional and precision feeding approaches to improve KNut in dairy cattle, with dietary energy and protein as primary control points, as they determine milk energy output, improve nutrient use, and reduce nutrient excretion per unit of milk. We summarized the scientific basis for energy and protein efficiencies and highlighted why population-average nutrient requirement systems can over- or un

Ovine TUSC5 and IGFBP3 Gene Polymorphisms and their Association with Tail Fat Weight in Sheep.

Tail fat weight is a key economic trait in fat-tailed sheep; reducing tail fat deposition is of significant importance for improving the economic efficiency of sheep farming. In this article, we measured the live weight before slaughter, tail fat weight, and carcass weight of Hu male sheep at 6 months of age and performed the descriptive statistical analysis. The results indicated the coefficient of variation of tail fat-related-traits ranged from 25% to 50%. Simultaneously, we selected IGFBP3 and TUSC5 as candidate genes based on their close association with fat deposition. Target regions wer

Relationship between sheep feces scores and gastrointestinal microorganisms and their effects on growth traits and blood indicators.

Fecal scores are crucial for assessing the digestive and gastrointestinal status of animals. The Bristol fecal scoring system is a commonly used method for the subjective evaluation of host feces, there is limited research on fecal scoring standards for fattening Hu sheep. In this study, Hu sheep were collected for rumen, rectum, and colon contents for 16S rDNA sequencing. 514 Hu sheep feces were scored based on the Bristol fecal scoring system, and production performance at each stage was measured. Finally, we developed the scoring standard of the manure of Hu sheep in the fattening period (a

Partially substituting alfalfa hay with hemp forage in the diet of goats improved feed efficiency, ruminal fermentation pattern and microbial profiles.

The use of hemp as a forage source in livestock diets has been less studied because bioactive residues in animal tissues may pose a risk to consumers. This study investigated the effects of partial substitution of alfalfa hay (AH) with hemp forage (HF) in growing goat diets on growth performance, carcass traits, ruminal fermentation characteristics, rumen microbial communities, blood biochemistry, and antioxidant indices. Forty Xiangdong black goats with body weight (BW) 7.82 ± 0.57 kg (mean ± SD) were grouped by BW and randomly assigned into one of the four treatment diets (n = 10/treatment)

Potential Role of Lauric Acid in Milk Fat Synthesis in Chinese Holstein Cows Based on Integrated Analysis of Ruminal Microbiome and Metabolome.

The composition and metabolic profile of the ruminal microbiome have an impact on milk composition. To unravel the ruminal microbiome and metabolome affecting milk fat synthesis in dairy cows, 16S rRNA and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) gene sequencing, as well as ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) methods were used to investigate the significant differences in ruminal bacterial and fungal communities as well as metabolome among Chinese Holstein cows with contrasting milk fat contents under the same diet (H-MF 5.82 ± 0.41% vs. L-MF 3.60 ± 0.12%). Evaluation of multifactorial digestive disorders in a dairy herd at different stages of lactation.

The manager of a large dairy herd (total confinement, total mixed ration feeding, 10130 kg milk sold per cow and year) requested a workup of a digestive disorder problem that had been ongoing for several years. The cows were at all stages of lactation, and the incidence proportion (events/100 cows at risk) of digestive disorders was approximately 5 to 10%. The clinical picture included an abnormal demeanor of varying severity and signs that differed among the cows. The latter included decreased milk production and physical activity, low body condition score, abnormal rumen motility and stratif

Description of Agathobaculum massiliense sp. nov., a new bacterial species prevalent in the human gut and predicted to produce indole and tryptophan based on genomic analysis.

The novel bacterial strain Marseille-P4005T was isolated from the stool sample of a healthy donor. It is a Gram-stain negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming rod. It grew optimally at 37 °C and at pH 7.0 on 5% sheep blood-enriched Columbia agar after preincubation in a blood-culture bottle supplemented with rumen and blood. This strain does not ferment monosaccharides (except D-tagatose), disaccharides, or polymeric carbohydrates. The major cellular fatty acids were hexadecenoic (24.6%), octadecanoic (22.8%), and tetradecanoic (20.1%) acids. Next-generation sequencing revealed a genome size of

Effects of whole maize high-grain diet feeding on colonic fermentation and bacterial community in weaned lambs.

High-grain diet is commonly used in intensive production to boost yield in short term, which may cause adverse effects such as rumen and colonic acidosis in ruminants. Maize is one of the key components of high-grain diet, and different processing methods of maize affect the digestive absorption and gastrointestinal development of ruminants. To investigate the effects of maize form in high-grain diets on colonic fermentation and bacterial community of weaned lambs, twenty-two 2.5-month-old healthy Hu lambs were fed separately a maize meal low-grain diet (19.2% grain; CON), a maize meal high-gr

Liver abscess microbiota of feedlot steers finished in natural and traditional management programs.

Liver abscess etiology in feedlot steers involves the escape of bacteria from the digestive tract to form a polymicrobial abscess within or on the external surface of the liver. However, little is known about the effects of feedlot finishing systems on the microbial composition of the liver abscess purulent material. Liver abscesses were collected at the time of harvest from steers originating from a single feedlot managed in either a traditional program (which included tylosin phosphate supplementation) or a natural program (without tylosin phosphate supplementation). The purulent material of

Copper Supplementation, A Challenge in Cattle.

Ensuring adequate copper supplementation in ruminants is a challenging task due to the complexity of copper metabolism in these animals. The three-way interaction between copper, molybdenum and sulphur (Cu-Mo-S) in the rumen makes ruminants, particularly cattle, very susceptible to suffering from secondary copper deficiency. Paradoxically, excessive copper storage in the liver to prevent deficiency becomes a hazard when ruminants are fed copper-supplemented diets even slightly above requirements. While cattle were traditionally thought to be relatively tolerant of copper accumulation, and repo

Effects of bismuth subsalicylate and dietary sulfur level on fermentation by ruminal microbes in continuous culture.

In ruminants, excess dietary sulfur can be associated with a reduction in DM intake, poor feedlot performance and sulfur-associated polioencephalomalacia. Bismuth subsalicylate (BSS) has been shown to decrease hydrogen sulfide in vitro. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate effects of BSS inclusion (0 or 0.5% of diet DM) and dietary sulfur (0.21 or 0.42% of diet DM) on microbial fermentation in continuous culture. Treatments were arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial design. Eight dual-flow continuous culture fermenters were used during 2 consecutive 10-d periods consisting of 7 d for stabi

Breed-specific microbiomes drive differential responses to 3-nitrooxypropanol and Acacia mearnsii in dairy cows.

Methane (CH4) inhibitor 3-nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP) shows variable efficacy in Brown Swiss (BS) and Holstein (HF) cows, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Rumination bolus, a proxy for rumen microbiota, combined with exhalomics (analysis of exhaled volatiles), offered a noninvasive approach to differentiate breed responses to CH4 mitigation strategies. We investigated whether differences in rumination bolus microbiota and exhaled VFA (eVFA) between BS and HF cows contribute to their responses to 3-NOP. Sixteen multiparous cows (8 BS, 8 HF) were studied in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin squ

Genome-resolved metagenomics reveals gastrointestinal microbiome adaptations in sheep responding to fiber- and starch-rich diets.

The gastrointestinal tract of ruminants hosts a specialized microbial ecosystem that has evolved to efficiently digest fiber. However, modern intensive farming practices, which often involve reduced dietary fiber and increased grain supplementation, are linked to metabolic disorders in ruminants. Despite this, the understanding of the taxonomic and functional adaptations of the gastrointestinal microbiome to dietary changes remains limited, largely due to the challenges in obtaining high-resolution characterization of microbial communities. This study employed genome-resolved metagenomics to e

Impacts of dietary arginine supplementation on performance, nutrient digestion and expression of proteins related to milk fatty acid and casein synthesis in early lactating dairy cows.

Arginine (Arg) can potentially increase milk yields in early lactating dairy cows by stimulating the development of mammary gland and the biosynthesis of milk proteins and fatty acids (FA); however, the underlying mechanism is still unclear. The hypothesis that rumen-protected Arg addition would increase milk, milk fat, and milk protein yields was tested, aiming to dlucidate the possible mechanism. Forty-eight multiparous Chinese Holstein dairy cows (milk yield 34.9 ± 1.27 kg/d, body weight 658 ± 12.7 kg, and days in lactation [DIL] 16.4 ± 2.56) were selected on the principle of proximity and

Ruminant nutrition symposium: novel microbial solutions to optimize production efficiency in beef and dairy systems.

The livestock industry is in search of sustainable technologies that enhance the profitability and sustainability of food animal production. Among these technologies, microbial solutions include living bacteria that may support soil, plant, and animal health. Bacterial inoculants have been the most used additives to modulate whole-plant corn silage fermentation, including homo- and heterofermentative bacteria. Bacterial inoculants can improve fermentation characteristics of grass silage, whereas the wide variation in chemical composition and management practices across cool- and warm-season gr
