INTRODUCTION: Dengue virus (DENV) is an emerging public health threat in Africa, where its impact is underestimated due to nonspecific clinical manifestations and restricted diagnostic capabilities. In Liberia, laboratory-confirmed cases of DENV were initially recorded in an urban febrile surveillance study (2018-2020), yet severe or fatal outcomes had not been previously reported. This paper reports the first laboratory-confirmed fatal dengue case and its implications for national surveillance and policy in Liberia.
CASE REPORT: On February 2, 2026, a 38-year-old Liberian man arrived at J. J

Mining impacted waters in West Africa are mixed chemical systems in which mining-derived Hg-Pb-Cd signals, geogenic As-Fe-Mn mobilisation, acid mine drainage, agricultural runoff, domestic inputs and sediment remobilisation may coexist. Existing water-quality indices, receptor models, geochemical models and machine-learning classifiers are useful for screening and apportionment, but they may compress overlapping mechanisms into dominant factors or exclusive labels. This study develops NeutroChem Fusion as a neutrosophic-Bayesian constrained DSmT framework for uncertainty-aware source-mechanism

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV) remains a significant public health and human rights concern globally, with interventions in West Africa designed to address prevention, response, and survivor support. This scoping review aims to synthesize existing evidence on interventions addressing GBV in West Africa, describing their typologies, delivery mechanisms, and outcomes.
METHODS: We used two search strings to identify GBV interventions implemented in West Africa and published between January 2010 and March 2025 across five databases, including PubMed, Zendy, Google Scholar, Medline, and R

BACKGROUND: Dengue is a re-emerging infectious disease that poses substantial challenges to healthcare systems in endemic regions, such as West Africa. Owing to its nonspecific and overlapping clinical symptoms - including fever, rash, headache, joint pains, nausea, vomiting - many cases go unrecognized or are misdiagnosed. Consequently, patients are often inappropriately treated with antimalarial or antibiotic therapies. Such mismanagement not only affects patient outcomes but also contributes to the development of antimicrobial and antimalarial drug resistance within these populations. This

BACKGROUND: The overlap in the epidemiology of malaria and helminths has been identified as a potential area to exploit for the development of an integrated control strategy that may help to achieve elimination of malaria and helminths. A randomized, controlled, observer-blind trial was conducted to assess the feasibility and safety of combining mass drug administration (MDA) for schistosomiasis and soil transmitted helminths (STH) with seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) among children living in Senegal.
METHODS: Female and male children aged 1-14 years were randomized 1:1:1, to receive V

Despite contributing to the large disease burden in West Africa, little is known about the genomic epidemiology of Streptococcus pneumoniae which cause meningitis among children under 5 years old in the region. We analysed whole-genome sequencing data from 185 S. pneumoniae isolates recovered from suspected paediatric meningitis cases as part of the World Health Organization (WHO) invasive bacterial diseases surveillance from 2010 to 2016. The phylogeny was reconstructed, accessory genome similarity was computed and antimicrobial-resistance patterns were inferred from the genome data and compa

PATH partnered with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and country ministries of health (MOHs) to coordinate pilot introductions of subcutaneous depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (subcutaneous DMPA or DMPA-SC, brand name Sayana Press) in Burkina Faso, Niger, Senegal, and Uganda from July 2014 through June 2016 in order to expand the range of methods available to women, particularly in remote locations. The pilot introductions aimed to answer key questions that would inform decisions about future investments in DMPA-SC and scaling up product availability and service-delivery innovations

INTRODUCTION: Virtually no African country provides HIV prevention services in sex work settings with an adequate scale and intensity. Uncertainty remains about the optimal set of interventions and mode of delivery.
METHODS: We systematically reviewed studies reporting interventions for reducing HIV transmission among female sex workers in sub-Saharan Africa between January 2000 and July 2011. Medline (PubMed) and non-indexed journals were searched for studies with quantitative study outcomes.
RESULTS: We located 26 studies, including seven randomized trials. Evidence supports implementation

BACKGROUND: Lassa fever is caused by a viral haemorrhagic arenavirus that affects two to three million people in West Africa, causing a mortality of between 5,000 and 10,000 each year. The natural reservoir of Lassa virus is the multi-mammate rat Mastomys natalensis, which lives in houses and surrounding fields. With the aim of gaining more information to control this disease, we here carry out a spatial analysis of Lassa fever data from human cases and infected rodent hosts covering the period 1965-2007. Information on contemporary environmental conditions (temperature, rainfall, vegetation)

BACKGROUND: Little is known about children undergoing critical care for malaria. The purpose of this survey was to evaluate the outcome in African children requiring endotracheal intubation for life-threatening malaria.
METHODS: All children with a primary diagnosis of severe malaria (2000 WHO definition) requiring endotracheal intubation, hospitalised over a five-year period, within a tertiary-care hospital in Dakar, Senegal, were enrolled in a retrospective cohort study.
RESULTS: 83 consecutive patients were included (median PRISM h24 score: 14; IQR: 10-19, multiple organ dysfunctions: 91.

BACKGROUND: Low birth weight, defined as less than 2.5 kg (5.5 lbs) at birth, remains a critical global public health challenge. It significantly increases the risk of neonatal mortality and immediate complications such as sepsis and hypothermia, along with lifelong consequences including childhood disabilities and adult-onset chronic diseases. However, there was a limited study that described the spatial distribution and predictors of low birth weight in sub-Saharan Africa. The study aimed to assess geospatial variations and predictors of low birth weight in sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: Anaemia in pregnancy remains a major public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa, contributing to adverse birth outcomes, including low birth weight and neonatal mortality. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the uptake of intermittent preventive treatment during pregnancy with at least three doses of sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (IPTp-SP3) to reduce these adverse outcomes. Achieving equitable distribution of IPTp-SP3 is essential for advancing Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG3), which aims to achieve universal health coverage and equitable access to healthcare service

BACKGROUND: Despite the longstanding implementation of universal hepatitis B infant vaccination programs, the World Health Organization African region (WHO AFRO) maintains the highest prevalence (2.5%) of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection among children ≤5 years of age. Scaling-up hepatitis B birth-dose (HepB BD) vaccination could avert mother-to-child transmission of HBV infection and advance regional progress towards eliminating viral hepatitis.
OBJECTIVE: To describe whether - and how - complexities within the health system or intervention influence the performance of HepB BD vacci

BACKGROUND: As of the end of 2021, twenty-four countries in the African meningitis belt have rolled out mass campaigns of MenAfriVac®, a meningococcal A conjugate vaccine (MACV) first introduced in 2010. Twelve have completed introduction of MACV into routine immunisation (RI) schedules. Although select post-campaign coverage data are published, no study currently comprehensively estimates MACV coverage from both routine and campaign sources in the meningitis belt across age, country, and time.
METHODS: In this modelling study, we assembled campaign data from the twenty-four countries that ha

BACKGROUND: Modifiable non-communicable disease (NCD) risk factors are becoming increasingly common among adolescents, with clustering of these risk factors in individuals of particular concern. The aim of this study was to assess global status of clustering of common modifiable NCD risk factors among adolescents.
METHODS: We used latest available data from nationally representative survey for 140 countries, namely the Global School-based Student Health Survey, the Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children and the longitudinal study of Australian Children. Weighted mean estimates of prevalence

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is the most frequent form of leishmaniasis, with 0.7 to 1.2 million cases per year globally. However, the burden of CL is poorly documented in some regions. We carried out this review to synthesize knowledge on the epidemiological burden of CL in sub-Saharan Africa.
METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, CABI Global health, Africa Index Medicus databases for publications on CL and its burden. There were no restrictions on language/publication date. Case series with less than ten patients, species identification studies, reviews, non-human, and n

BACKGROUND: By September 2014, an outbreak of Ebola Viral Disease (EVD) in West African countries of Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Senegal and Nigeria, had recorded over 4500 and 2200 probable or confirmed cases and deaths respectively. EVD, an emerging infectious disease, can create fear and panic among patients, contacts and relatives, which could be a risk factor for psychological distress. Psychological distress among this subgroup could have public health implication for control of EVD, because of potential effects on patient management and contact tracing. We determined the Prevalence,

BACKGROUND: Urogenital schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma haematobium is widely distributed across Africa and is increasingly being targeted for control. Genome sequences and population genetic parameters can give insight into the potential for population- or species-level drug resistance. Microsatellite DNA loci are genetic markers in wide use by Schistosoma researchers, but there are few primers available for S. haematobium.
METHODS: We sequenced 1,058,114 random DNA fragments from clonal cercariae collected from a snail infected with a single Schistosoma haematobium miracidium. We assem

Infective Endocarditis (IE) is an endocardial infection usually caused by bacteria that affects not only the native heart valves but also, with increasing frequency intravascular implanted devices and congenital heart diseases. Despite medical advances, IE remains a life-threatening disease with substantial morbidity and mortality. In Africa, its diagnosis and treatment are still a major challenge in clinical practice. The objective of this work was to study the epidemiological, clinical features, diagnostic techniques currently used in medical practice and the range of micro-organisms that ar
