[A case of left dorsomedial thalamic infarction with unilateral schizophrenia-like auditory hallucinations].

We report a case of a right-handed, 73-year-old woman with auditory hallucinations lateralized to the right ear. A brain MRI revealed a small infarction in the left dorsomedial nucleus (DM) of the thalamus. The patient did not have either psychiatric or neurological prior history, and had otherwise been treated for ischemic heart disease, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia for 10 years. Two months prior to admission, she had become forgetful, and had lost her wallet several times. She concurrently began to experience auditory hallucinations in which she heard the voices of her acquaintances, or

A Cross Sectional and Longitudinal Assessment of Neuropsychiatric Symptoms and Brain Functional Connectivity in Patients With Mild Cognitive Impairment, Cerebrovascular Disease and Parkinson Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Mild Behavioral Impairment (MBI) is characterized by later-life emergent and persistent neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) in older adults without dementia, serving as a potential precursor to various forms of dementia. This study explores the association between NPS and functional connectivity (FC) of the default mode network (DMN), executive control network (ECN), and salience network (SN) across three cohorts: mild cognitive impairment due to AD (MCI), cerebrovascular disease (CVD), and Parkinson's disease (PD). Additionally, the effect of CNS medication on NPS-FC associations wa

[Efficacy of atypical antipsychotics in depressive syndromes].

Depression is a frequent symptom in psychiatry, either isolated (major depression) or entangled with other psychiatric symptoms (psychotic depression, depression of bipolar disorders). Many antidepressant drugs are available with different pharmacological profiles from different classes: tricyclic antidepressants, monoamine oxydase inhibitors, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). However, there are some limitations with these drugs because there is a long delay before relief for symptoms, some patients with major depression are resistant to treatment, there is a risk to induce manic

[Awareness disorders in Alzheimer's disease and in mild cognitive impairment].

INTRODUCTION: Awareness disorders in Alzheimer's disease still remains unclear despite much research regarding this phenomenon. Papers report various and contrasted results with varying frequency from one study to another. Hence, the interest in awareness in Alzheimer's disease remains limited. Nevertheless, this symptom is closely associated with caregivers' burden and increases the patient's dependency, since the patient is unable to avoid dangers, requiring some care services or institutionalization The purpose of this current review is to recall the main neuro-anatomical and theoretical ba

Predictors of phenotypic progression and disease onset in premanifest and early-stage Huntington's disease in the TRACK-HD study: analysis of 36-month observational data.

BACKGROUND: TRACK-HD is a multinational prospective observational study of Huntington's disease (HD) that examines clinical and biological findings of disease progression in individuals with premanifest HD (preHD) and early-stage HD. We aimed to describe phenotypic changes in these participants over 36 months and identify baseline predictors of progression. METHODS: Individuals without HD but carrying the mutant huntingtin gene (classed as preHD-A if ≥10·8 years and preHD-B if <10·8 years from predicted onset), participants with early HD (classed as HD1 if they had a total functional capacity

[Psychiatric disorders in adult form of Niemann-Pick disease type C].

INTRODUCTION: Niemann-Pick type C disease (NPC) is a rare genetic disease with an extremely heterogeneous clinical presentation. The adult form of this disease is usually expressed with neurological symptoms; however, non-specific psychiatric disorders are often associated. This article presents a retrospective study on a cohort of NPC patients diagnosed in France with the objectives of researching the presence of psychiatric disorders and qualifying these disorders. METHODS: After carrying out a research within hospital records, a questionnaire was sent to patients or their relatives and the

The Movement Disorder Society Evidence-Based Medicine Review Update: Treatments for the non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

The Movement Disorder Society (MDS) Task Force on Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) Review of Treatments for Parkinson's Disease (PD) was first published in 2002 and was updated in 2005 to cover clinical trial data up to January 2004 with the focus on motor symptoms of PD. In this revised version the MDS task force decided it was necessary to extend the review to non-motor symptoms. The objective of this work was to update previous EBM reviews on treatments for PD with a focus on non-motor symptoms. Level-I (randomized controlled trial, RCT) reports of pharmacological and nonpharmacological interv

Effects of nutrients (in food) on the structure and function of the nervous system: update on dietary requirements for brain. Part 1: micronutrients.

The objective of this update is to give an overview of the effects of dietary nutrients on the structure and certain functions of the brain. As any other organ, the brain is elaborated from substances present in the diet (sometimes exclusively, for vitamins, minerals, essential amino-acids and essential fatty acids, including omega- 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids). However, for long it was not fully accepted that food can have an influence on brain structure, and thus on its function, including cognitive and intellectuals. In fact, most micronutrients (vitamins and trace-elements) have been dir

Detection of anxiety and depression-like behavior and intra-brain pathological markers in Parkinsonian cynomolgus monkeys.

OBJECTIVE: Anxiety and depression are common non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease, but its underlying mechanism and treatment are still unclear. The key factor to solve this problem is to systematically establish an objective evaluation system of anxiety and depression-like behavior on a suitable PD animal model and reveal its pathological changes in the brain. METHODS: Ten male cynomolgus monkeys were chosen, with five undergoing construction of the 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-induced left-sided symptoms-predominant PD model, following individualization principle

Factors Contributing to the Development of Neuropsychiatric Manifestations in Persons With Multiple Sclerosis: A Systematic Review.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common chronic demyelinating disease affecting the central nervous system (CNS) and is distinguished by neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. It has four categories based on clinical course, with relapsing-remitting being the most common type. MS predominantly manifests with motor and sensory dysfunctions. However, neuropsychiatric manifestations such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder are not uncommon. Various factors may contribute to the development of these manifestations; therefore, this study aimed to unravel them. This syst

[Psychiatric manifestations of a new variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Apropos of a case].

UNLABELLED: The new variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (nvCJD) was first described in the UK in 1996 (16). The nvCJD differs from sporadic, genetic and iatrogenic CJD. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is closely associated with an abnormal isoform PrPSc of a cell-surface glycoprotein, prion protein (14). Molecular analysis suggests that nvCJD is caused by the same prion strain as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) (4, 10). To the end of September 2000, there have been 82 cases of nvCJD in the UK. We report the second French case of nvCJD to our knowledge (5, 13). CASE REPORT: This 36 year old

Safety and tolerability of intravenous liposomal GM1 in patients with Parkinson disease: A single-center open-label clinical phase I trial (NEON trial).

BACKGROUND: Parkinson disease (PD) is a chronic progressive neurodegenerative disorder leading to motor and non-motor impairment, often resulting in severe loss of quality of life. There are symptomatic treatments without effect on the progression of PD. A disease-modifying treatment that could ideally stop the neurodegenerative process is direly needed. Monosialotetrahexosylganglioside (GM1) is a promising molecule with neuroprotective effects in preclinical models of PD and has yielded encouraging results in patients with PD in a randomized placebo-controlled trial. Talineuren (TLN) is a lip
