Getting back on track to meet global anaemia reduction targets: a Lancet Haematology Commission.

GLOBAL BURDEN AND DATA GAPS: Many countries lack reliable data on anaemia prevalence, especially for populations beyond young children and women of reproductive age. Few national surveys measure both anaemia and its underlying causes. We call for the creation of a standardised global data repository and the development of a harmonised micronutrient survey platform to collect comprehensive, periodic data. We also recommend better integration of data across sources, including household surveys and other health data sources, and inclusion of haemoglobin assessment in existing survey platforms tha

Effects of a 3-day simulated heatwave on physiological and functional outcomes in older adults in Canada: a single-site randomised crossover trial.

BACKGROUND: Laboratory-based heatwave simulations are a valuable tool for evaluating physiological and functional effects of heat exposure in vulnerable population groups (eg, older adults) and for testing the efficacy of personal cooling strategies. However, previous studies have been short in duration (2-9 h) and therefore have not captured the cumulative, multiday exposures characteristic of real-world heatwaves. We aimed to investigate physiological and functional outcomes in older adults exposed to a 3-day simulated heatwave. METHODS: We conducted a single-site, randomised, crossover tri

[Exophiala on the Stored Apples: Evaluation with One Health Perspective].

The one health perspective is an integrative and holistic approach that recognizes the interconnection and interdependence of human, animal and plant health and aims to improve each sustainably. This perspective has gained particular importance following the coronavirus disease-2019 pandemic and has been acknowledged as a component of public health. Fungal infections also pose significant risks to ecosystems, ranging from crops to animals and humans. These risks partly arise from human and animal mobility and have increased alongside climate change. Therefore, food safety has become an integra

Patient safety as an ethical interface: alignment between staff safety culture, speaking up climate and inpatient perceptions in Romania: a cross-sectional multi-informant survey.

BACKGROUND: Patient safety emerges where clinical risk governance intersects with ethical duties of non-maleficence, respect for autonomy, and institutional accountability. Safety culture surveys and patient-reported experience measures often evolve on separate analytic tracks, leaving uncertainty about how staff-facing metrics translate into patient-facing ethical practices such as disclosure after harm. METHODS: We conducted an exploratory cross-sectional multi-informant survey in an acute-care hospital in Romania. Healthcare workers (defined as physicians, nurses, hospital auxiliary staff,

Effectiveness of vitamin D2 compared with vitamin D3 replacement therapy in a primary healthcare setting: a retrospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Vitamin D deficiency is a worldwide public health concern, which can lead to severe diseases, such as rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. Most studies have compared equimolar unit-to-unit doses of vitamin D2 and D3. OBJECTIVES: The current study aimed to answer the research question: "How effective is vitamin D2 (600,000 U/1.5 ml) compared to vitamin D3 (300,000 U/1 ml) parenteral supplementation for raising serum vitamin D levels in adult patients treated in a primary health care setting?" SETTING: Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) runs 28 health centers distr

Unravelling the cellular and molecular pathogenesis of bovine babesiosis: is the sky the limit?

The global impact of bovine babesiosis caused by the tick-borne apicomplexan parasites Babesia bovis, Babesia bigemina and Babesia divergens is vastly underappreciated. These parasites invade and multiply asexually in bovine red blood cells (RBCs), undergo sexual reproduction in their tick vectors (Rhipicephalus spp. for B. bovis and B. bigemina, and Ixodes ricinus for B. divergens) and have a trans-ovarial mode of transmission. Babesia parasites can cause acute and persistent infections to adult naïve cattle that can occur without evident clinical signs, but infections caused by B. bovis are

Diagnostic system for tebuthiuron soil ecotoxicity using morphophysiological indicators of Mucuna pruriens validated by Lactuca sativa.

This study developed an integrated diagnostic system for tebuthiuron-induced soil ecotoxicity based on morphophysiological indicators of Mucuna pruriens, using the germination index (GI) of Lactuca sativa as a sensitive ecotoxicological validation endpoint. The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions using a completely randomized design with 12 treatments and 360 individual pots (independent samples evaluated via destructive sampling), which were distributed across five evaluation periods at 14, 28, 42, 56, and 70 days after sowing. Morphophysiological variables, including plant h

[Application of Multi-Organ Synchronous Continuous Temperature Monitoring in the Analysis of Postmortem Temperature Changes].

OBJECTIVES: To compare the errors between data obtained by interval sampling at different time intervals and continuous temperature records, and to analyze the cooling kinetic characteristics of postmortem temperature differences at different measurement organs by monitoring multi-organ synchronous continuous temperatures. METHODS: Liver, brain, rectal, and ambient temperatures were synchronously and continuously recorded for 72 h in 10 adult male rabbits placed in a climate chamber maintained at 25.4 ℃. A measurement organ was considered to have approached ambient temperature when the absolu

Impacts of Skin Eccrine Glands on the Measured Values of Transepidermal Water Loss.

Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) is widely used to assess and quantify skin insensible water loss to assess skin's barrier function integrity. Low TEWL values are normally indicative of intact skin and a healthy functional barrier, whereas an increased TEWL reveals a disturbed or disrupted skin barrier. Because most skin sites at which these measurements are made have eccrine glands present, the contribution of the sweat gland activity to these measurements is variable and, in most cases, unknown. The separation between the contribution of water loss that is reflective of the skin barrier inte

Interpretation of the source-specific substantive control measures of the Minamata Convention on Mercury.

Being persistent, toxic, and bio-accumulative, Mercury (Hg) seriously affects the environment and human health. Due to Hg's attribute of long-range environmental transport across national borders, especially through atmospheric transport, no country can fully protect its environment and human health with its own efforts, without global cooperation. The Minamata Convention on Mercury, which was formally adopted and opened for signature in October 2013, is the only global environmental regime on the control of Hg pollution. Its main substantive control measures are source-specific: its phasing-o

Knowledge, attitudes and educational exposure regarding neglected tropical diseases among medical students and residents in Italy: a nationwide multicenter survey from the Italian Society for Tropical Medicine and Global Health (SIMET ETS).

BACKGROUND: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) represent a major cause of preventable morbidity and are increasingly relevant in high-income settings because of migration, international travel, climate-sensitive vector expansion and persistent health inequities. However, NTDs-related knowledge and educational exposure among future and early-career physicians in Europe remain poorly documented. This study assessed NTDs-related knowledge, attitudes and practice-related experiences among medical students and residents in Italy. METHODS: We conducted a national multicenter cross-sectional survey

Resolving the biome debate: ecological and palaeo-data concur that the extensive tree-limited grassy biomes of central and north-western Madagascar are largely anthropogenic.

For millennia, human activities have transformed ecosystems globally. Determining which landscapes are predominantly anthropogenic is crucial to conservation and habitat restoration. Madagascar, a critically-threatened biodiversity hotspot, is a prominent example. Currently 80% of non-cropland habitat is tree-limited savanna falling under the tropical grassy biome (savanna/TGB). Savanna/TGB is particularly prevalent in the Dry Deciduous Forest (DDF) in the north/northwest and below the treeline in the Central Highlands (CH). Relative savanna/TGB cover when agropastoralism arrived <1300 years a

Late-gestation heat stress alters placental structure and function in multiparous dairy cows.

The placenta plays a pivotal role in fetal development and the dam's subsequent lactation performance, because it facilitates nutrient transfer, heat dissipation, and gas exchange with the growing fetus, and regulates key hormones essential for mammary gland development. Heat stress experienced during gestation and lactation can significantly reduce the placenta's capacity to perform these critical functions. To investigate the impact of heat stress, trials were conducted over the summer months of 2020, 2022, and 2023 in Florida. Multiparous pregnant Holstein cows were dried off 54 ± 5 d befor

Transcriptome profile of spleen tissues from locally-adapted Kenyan pigs (Sus scrofa) experimentally infected with three varying doses of a highly virulent African swine fever virus genotype IX isolate: Ken12/busia.1 (ken-1033).

BACKGROUND: African swine fever (ASF) is a lethal hemorrhagic disease affecting domestic pigs resulting in up to 100% mortality rates caused by the ASF virus (ASFV). The locally-adapted pigs in South-western Kenya have been reported to be resilient to disease and harsh climatic conditions and tolerate ASF; however, the mechanisms by which this tolerance is sustained remain largely unknown. We evaluated the gene expression patterns in spleen tissues of these locally-adapted pigs in response to varying infective doses of ASFV to elucidate the virus-host interaction dynamics. METHODS: Locally ad

Improvement of wound healing by water-filtered infrared-A (wIRA) in patients with chronic venous stasis ulcers of the lower legs including evaluation using infrared thermography.

BACKGROUND: Water-filtered infrared-A (wIRA) is a special form of heat radiation with a high tissue-penetration and with a low thermal burden to the surface of the skin. wIRA is able to improve essential and energetically meaningful factors of wound healing by thermal and non-thermal effects. AIM OF THE STUDY: prospective study (primarily planned randomised, controlled, blinded, de facto with one exception only one cohort possible) using wIRA in the treatment of patients with recalcitrant chronic venous stasis ulcers of the lower legs with thermographic follow-up. METHODS: 10 patients (5 mal

Neurological and ocular fascioliasis in humans.

Fascioliasis is a food-borne parasitic disease caused by the trematode species Fasciola hepatica, distributed worldwide, and Fasciola gigantica, restricted to given regions of Africa and Asia. This disease in humans shows an increasing importance, which relies on its recent widespread emergence related to climate and global changes and also on its pathogenicity in the invasive, biliary, and advanced chronic phases in the human endemic areas, mainly of developing countries. In spite of the large neurological affection capacity of Fasciola, this important pathogenic aspect of the disease has bee

The manipulation of minds:reckoning with the legacy of the american post 9/11 torture program.

In this article, we argue that the government's post 9-11 torture program was a big lie, in that the designers, executors and enablers knew all along that torture does not elicit reliable information. We review the government's own research on the matter, and we discuss the ways in which methods known to be unreliable were implemented, most saliently at the detention facility at Guantánamo Bay. We review the secrecy and propaganda surrounding the scope and horror of the torture program at Guantánamo and black sites around the world, and the painful truth of how the government knowingly adopted
