Single-Cell and Spatial Omics Technologies in Rice Abiotic Stress Biology: A Methodological Review.

Abiotic stresses-drought, salinity, extreme temperature, flooding, and heavy-metal toxicity-constrain rice (Oryza sativa L.) yield worldwide, and the cellular programmes underlying them are unevenly distributed across cell types that bulk-tissue assays average together. This review examines, from a methodological standpoint, what single-cell and spatial omics technologies can and cannot establish about rice abiotic stress biology. We first define the modality space: single-cell omics measures RNA, chromatin accessibility, DNA methylation, protein, or metabolite features at the resolution of in

Genotype X Environment Interaction and Stability of Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa, Willd.) Genotypes for Yield and Yield-Related Traits in Ethiopia.

Agriculture is the pillar of Ethiopia's economy, employing over 80% of the population. However, it remains highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Promoting climate-smart agricultural practices is therefore critical. Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.), a highly nutritious pseudo-cereal with broad adaptability and efficient water use, presents a promising alternative crop for Ethiopia's diverse agro-ecologies. Its tolerance to drought and salinity makes it an ideal candidate for enhancing food and nutritional security under changing climate conditions. Therefore, this study aimed to

Adaptive silviculture for climate change in North American forests: Operationalizing the resistance-resilience-transition framework.

The impacts of global climate change have compelled forest managers to evaluate their practices and ecosystems, considering when and how to resist change, promote resilience, or facilitate transitions. Forest adaptation has made significant strides to move from theory to practice over the last two decades, with widespread examples of intentional, thoughtful, explicit adaptation. However, very few of these examples exist within a research framework, and their underlying theories of change are unlikely to be rigorously tested. The Adaptive Silviculture for Climate Change (ASCC) Network addresses

Enhanced net primary productivity across Inner Mongolian grasslands despite diverging stability under climate perturbations.

BACKGROUND: Understanding ecosystems functioning under frequent climatic perturbations is central to predicting ecosystem stability. While studies suggest that stable ecosystems can buffer against climate extremes, there is no agreement on whether this stability arises from their resistance (ability to absorb shock) to perturbations, resilience (capacity to recover) towards disturbances, or a combination of both. Using annual net primary productivity (NPP) and Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) and aridity index (AI), we investigated the (i) spatiotemporal changes of NP

Combined microbial inoculation improves plant growth, nutrient acquisition, and soil biological functioning in Opuntia ficus-indica under water deficit.

UNLABELLED: The productivity of Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill. in arid and semi-arid environments is strongly constrained by water scarcity and limited soil biological activity. This study evaluated the effects of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) consortia (Cs1 and Cs2), arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), and their combined inoculations (Cs1&AMF and Cs2&AMF) on plant growth, nutrient acquisition, soil physicochemical properties, enzymatic activities, and microbial functional diversity under non-stressed and water-stressed conditions (95% and 20% of field capacity, respectively). Data on transgenerational memory effects of photosynthetic efficiency of twelve wheat varieties under elevated carbon dioxide concentration and reduced soil water availability.

This data [1] represents ACi curves of twelve winter wheat varieties, which were grown under elevated and ambient CO2 concentrations within a FACE experiment and the subsequent F1 generation was exposed to ambient and elevated CO2 concentrations in a highly controlled environment using climate chambers. The 12 winter wheat genotypes (Triticum aestivum L.) were selected based on their susceptibilty to leaf rust (Puccinia triticina Eriks.) and Fusarium head blight (Fusarium graminearum Schwabe) according to the descriptive variety list of the German Federal Office of Plant Varietes (Beschreibend

Climate-induced migration and climate immobility in Ghana: A socio-ecological mixed method study.

BACKGROUND: Several communities face the cyclical challenge of living with situations where climate change events and triggers push members to migrate at their own planned and prepared timelines or against their own prepared timelines often termed voluntary and involuntary climate-induced migration. There are others who express no desire to migrate despite the exposure to climate change stressors in addition to those who desire to migrate and or are unable to migrate and may feel trapped due to their exposure to climate change stressors (flood, extreme heat, windstorm and drought). The combine

Factors important for bull purchasing decisions and management in extensive rangeland production systems of New Mexico: a producer survey.

There were 463,000 head of beef cows in New Mexico as of January 1, 2021 (NASS, 2020), down roughly 4% from 2020 (NASS, 2019). Frequent drought often results in herd reduction and loss of valuable genetic progress. Bull selection is critical due to their influence on herd development. A survey was conducted to identify traits important to bull selection in New Mexico. Surveys were collected digitally (n = 83) and via the mail (n = 74). Responses were largely by cow/calf producers averaging 57 ± 1 years old with 24 ± 1 years' experience. Survey respondents represented 4,384,296 acres of private

Plant and natural product based homemade remedies for veterinary uses by the Peul community in Benin.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Across Africa, Peul community typically rely on plant-based veterinary knowledge to manage common livestock health problems. Unfortunately, their nomadic life-style being affected by conflicts, land tenure constraints, and drought, they have been shifting to a sedentary life. The process of their settlement led to the erosion of the vast ethnoveterinary skills they had acquired over centuries and forced them to replace the plant and other species they used by commercial products. AIM OF THE STUDY: 1) To collect comprehensive data from the Benin Peul community o

Woody-plant ecosystems under climate change and air pollution-response consistencies across zonobiomes?

Forests store the largest terrestrial pools of carbon (C), helping to stabilize the global climate system, yet are threatened by climate change (CC) and associated air pollution (AP, highlighting ozone (O3) and nitrogen oxides (NOx)). We adopt the perspective that CC-AP drivers and physiological impacts are universal, resulting in consistent stress responses of forest ecosystems across zonobiomes. Evidence supporting this viewpoint is presented from the literature on ecosystem gross/net primary productivity and water cycling. Responses to CC-AP are compared across evergreen/deciduous foliage t

Recent trends in gas-phase ammonia and PM2.5 ammonium in the Southeast United States.

UNLABELLED: Ammonia measurements from the Southeastern Aerosol Research and Characterization (SEARCH) study network were analyzed for trends over 9 yr (2004-2012) of observations. Total ammonia concentrations, defined as the sum of gas-phase ammonia and fine particle ammonium, were found to be decreasing by 1-4% yr(-1) and were qualitatively consistent with ammonia emission estimates for the SEARCH states of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and Florida. On the other hand, gas-phase ammonia mixing ratios were found to be slightly rising or steady over the region, leading to the observation that t

Effects of fescue toxicosis on bull growth, semen characteristics, and breeding soundness evaluation.

Tall fescue possesses heat, drought, and pest resistance conferred to the plant by its mutualistic relationship with the ergot alkaloid producing fungal endophyte, Neotyphodium coenophialum. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of ergot alkaloid consumption on growth, scrotal circumference (SC), and semen quality. The SC measurement and percentage of motile and normal sperm were used to determine if a bull passed the breeding soundness exam (BSE) requirements. Bulls (n = 14) between 13 and 16 mo of age exhibiting ≥32 cm SC and having passed a BSE were assigned to 1 of 2 dieta

Realimentation of nutrient restricted pregnant beef cows supports compensatory fetal muscle growth.

Drought and other weather-related disasters impact the amount and quality of grains and forages available to beef cattle. The impact of nutrient restriction at specific gestational timeframes on fetal skeletal muscle growth was examined. Crossbred beef cows were fed to NRC recommendations (CCC) or restricted to 60% of said levels for the first 85 or 140 d of pregnancy followed by realimentation to recommended protein and energy levels (RCC and RRC, respectively). Fetal infraspinatus (INF) morphometrics and gene expression analyses were performed at d 85, 140, and 254 of gestation. Results demo

[Responses of wetland gross primary productivity to extreme climate events in China during 2001-2023.].

Extreme climate events can substantially affect gross primary productivity (GPP) and the stability of carbon sinks of wetlands by altering hydrothermal conditions. However, national-scale evidence on how wetland GPP responds to different types of extreme climate events across China remains insufficient to support adaptive wetland ecosystem management. We focused on wetland vegetation across China and combined sensitivity analysis with partial correlation analysis to quantify the response intensity and dominant controls of wetland GPP to extreme climate events during 2001-2023, and further anal

Assessment of livestock depredation by hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas) in and around Borena-Sayint National Park, northern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: As human populations expand and natural habitats become increasingly fragmented, the interface between agricultural activities and wilderness areas has become a focal point of ecological tension. Livestock depredation is a prevalent form of human-wildlife conflict, particularly in landscapes bordering protected areas. Beyond causing substantial financial losses for subsistence communities, these conflicts often generate negative attitudes toward wildlife, ultimately hindering long-term conservation efforts. Hamadryas baboon (Papio hamadryas) is distributed across diverse environmen

Unveiling the role of heat shock protein 83 (HSP83) in Gossypium hirsutum in enhancing whitefly stress tolerance.

Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are key molecular chaperones that control protein homeostasis and stress signalling in plants. They have been widely studied for abiotic stresses, such as drought and heat; however, their role in insect-mediated biotic stress is little known, especially in polyploid crops like cotton, which is an important economic crop. Whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius), infestation is a serious agronomic constraint in cotton (Gossypium spp.); however, efforts to completely investigate the genetic and molecular components driving host resistance against this pest have not been en

Carbon quantum dots and mycorrhizal fungi improve cadmium stress tolerance and essential oil production in grapefruit mint (Mentha suaveolens × piperita).

Cadmium (Cd) is a non-essential, highly phytotoxic element and a widespread pollutant in agricultural soils. Employing biofertilizers and nanoparticles (NPs) has been identified as an effective strategy to alleviate the detrimental impacts of heavy metal (HM)-contaminated soils. Previous studies have provided partial insights into the individual roles of CQD‑NPs and AMF under drought stress; however, information on their combined effects is still limited and fragmented. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the individual and synergistic effects of CQD-NPs and AMF on the yield and EO

Floodplain nitrifiers harbor the genetic potential for utilizing a wide range of organic nitrogen compounds.

UNLABELLED: Organic compounds such as urea and cyanate can serve as nitrogen (N) sources for nitrifying microorganisms, including ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and bacteria (AOB), complete ammonia-oxidizing (comammox) bacteria, and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). Here we investigated metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) for all four nitrifier guilds generated from hydrologically variable floodplain sediments of the Wind River Basin (WRB; Riverton, WY, USA) for their genetic potential to utilize organic N compounds. A vast majority of WRB nitrifier MAGs harbored urease (ure) and at least one

Leaf ecological stoichiometry and anatomical structural adaptation mechanisms of Quercus sect. Heterobalanus in southeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

BACKGROUND: With the dramatic uplift of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) and the increase in altitude in the Pliocene, the environment became dry and cold, thermophilous plants that originally inhabited ancient subtropical forest essentially disappeared. However, Quercus sect. Heterobalanus (QSH) have gradually become dominant or constructive species distributed on harsh sites in the Hengduan Mountains range in southeastern QTP, Southwest China. Ecological stoichiometry reveals the survival strategies plants adopt to adapt to changing environment by quantifying the proportions and relationships
