The authors present a retrospective study of 35 consecutive patients (60 feet) treated with the Maxwell-Brancheau Arthroereisis (MBA) implant. The mean age of the cohort at the time of surgery was 14.3 (range 5 to 46) years, and 22 (62.86%) men and 13 (37.14%) women were included. Preoperative and postoperative anteroposterior and lateral foot radiographs were compared at a mean of 36 (range 18 to 48) months postoperatively, and the following mean changes were reported: talocalcaneal angle 24.15° ± 7.97° to 18.53° ± 8.23°, calcaneocuboid angle 18.67° ± 8.72° to 11.76° ± 8.49°, first to second

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether foot shape (flat, normal, or cavus feet) affects functioning among military recruits.
METHODS: A total of 230 Royal Australian Air Force recruits embarking on a 10-week basic training course took part in a prospective cohort study of foot shape and its effect on functioning. Recruits were divided into three groups based on their foot shape, i.e., flat feet (n = 22), normal feet (n = 139), and cavus feet (n = 44), with the diagnosis being made from the arch index measured from their footprints. The groups were assessed at baseline and week 8. Outcome measures in

Pain in the feet is an important diagnostic feature and a major management problem of rheumatoid arthritis. Of 50 hospitalized patients, 28% recalled painful feet as the sole presenting symptom of their disease.RHEUMATOID DISEASE COMMONLY AFFECTS THE FEET: 90% of the patients studied complained of foot pain at some time during the course of their disease, 86% had clinical involvement and 92% had radiological changes in their feet. The forefoot is most frequently involved. Midfoot involvement was noted in 68% but was symptomatic in only 22%. Changes in the ankle were least common but always symp

BackgroundLoss or displacement of a fat pad on the foot increases plantar pressure, leading to pain and plantar ulcers. These ulcers, especially in patients with diabetic neuropathy, have high recurrence rates, often resulting in amputations. Standard of care focuses on reducing plantar pressure with shoe padding or orthotic devices, leaving the restoration of the fat pad as an unmet medical need. To address this, a human cryopreserved adipose tissue (hCAT) allograft has been developed to repair adipose tissue defects.MethodsScientific characterization of hCAT included assessments of its struc

BACKGROUND: Foot deformities, particularly pes planovalgus, are common in individuals with cerebral palsy, often requiring surgical interventions such as lateral column lengthening (LCL) to improve foot alignment and function. While LCL is a well-established procedure for treating valgus deformities, the long-term effects on bone morphology, particularly in the talus and calcaneus, have not been thoroughly explored.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the morphological differences in the talus and calcaneus in individuals with cerebral palsy who have undergone LCL surgery compared to nonsurgical patients an

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic flatfeet are usually caused by attenuation of the medial soft tissues rather than a lateral osseous deficiency. Debate continues on whether spring ligament attenuation or posterior tibial tendon (PTT) dysfunction is the initial driver for the deformity. Our comparative prospective study aimed to quantify the radiological and clinical outcomes of 2 techniques for spring ligament reconstruction using a hamstring graft or a synthetic ligament.
METHODS: Seventeen spring ligament reconstructions (SLRs) were performed in 17 patients using synthetic ligament augmentation and 1

OBJECTIVE: The accessory anterolateral talar facet (AALTF) is a developmental entity described as a potential cause for rigid, painful flat foot. This study evaluates the possible association between the AALTF and other flat foot etiologies, specifically different types of tarsal coalitions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated patients with tarsal coalition or sinus tarsi syndrome for an AALTF on CT and MRI. Exclusion criteria included acute ankle trauma, recent surgery, motion or metal artifacts. We evaluated the AALTF length and height, and the lateral talocalcaneal structures for associate

49,XXXXY is the rarest X and Y chromosomal variation, with an incidence of 1 in 80,000-100,000 live male births and has been associated with numerous musculoskeletal abnormalities. Data was collected from an international cohort of boys with 49,XXXXY over 10 years. Children were evaluated by a multidisciplinary team consisting of a pediatric orthopedist, a neurogeneticist, a neurodevelopmentalist, and two physical therapists. Increased rates of torticollis (32.4%), hamstring tightness (42%), radioulnar synostosis (67.6%), pes planus (65.2%), and other foot abnormalities (86.9%) were observed.

INTRODUCTION: Physical and rehabilitation medicine physicians commonly see patients with chronic functional ankle instability. The main anatomical structures involved in ankle stability are the peroneus (fibularis) brevis and peroneus longus muscles. Several anatomical muscle-tendon variations have been described in the literature as being sometimes responsible for this instability, the peroneus quartus muscle being the most frequent. The objective of this clinical study is to discuss the implication of the bilateral peroneus quartus muscle in functional ankle instability.

Treatment of adult acquired flexible flat foot deformity can be problematic. Triple arthrodesis for structural correction has been the standard of care, thus sacrificing hind foot motion. The objective of this study was to assess the value of double calcaneal osteotomies in improving structural alignment while maintaining hind foot motion, which may further protect the function of adjacent motion segments. Double calcaneal osteotomies (Evans osteotomy and posterior calcaneal displacement osteotomy) were performed on 17 feet of 14 patients. Postoperative follow-up showed significant improvement

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of flexible flat feet in the provincial population of 4- to 13-year-old schoolchildren and the incidence of treatments considered unnecessary.
SETTING: Province of Málaga, Spain.
METHODS: We examined and graded by severity a sample of 1181 pupils taken from a total population of 198 858 primary schoolchildren (CI: 95%; margin of error: 5%). The sample group was separated into three 2-year age groups: 4 and 5 years, 8 and 9 years, and 12 and 13 years. The plantar footprint was classified according to Denis1 into three grades of flat feet: grade 1 in whic

Although foot deformation starts in the early stage of tibialis posterior (TP) tendon dysfunction, this condition is often overlooked or misdiagnosed. We observed consistently a clinical sign of TP tendon dysfunction that, to our knowledge, has not yet been described. Patients were tested while they were standing and fully weight-bearing with both feet. When the shank of the affected foot was taken with one hand and externally rotated, or when the heel of the affected foot was taken with one hand and brought passively into a varus position, the head of the first metatarsal raised in the case o

A retrospective study of two aspects of the Evans calcaneal osteotomy with bone graft is presented. First, the postoperative casting time can be decreased significantly to 3 weeks of nonweightbearing and 3 weeks of weightbearing. Second, the metatarsus adductus angle remains relatively unaltered after the procedure.

The child who limps can represent a diagnostic challenge. More than one consultation and several investigations (including a bone scan) might be necessary to define the problem. It is most important to realise that pain felt in the knee often originates in the hip.

Obesity and foot deformities pose substantial public health burdens globally. However, their causal relationship remains uncertain due to confounding and reverse causation in observational studies. This study aimed to investigate causal associations between obesity-related anthropometric indices and foot deformities using Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. This two-sample MR study utilized genetic instruments from publicly available genome-wide association studies databases. We extracted single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) as instrumental variables for obesity (6 SNPs), body mass index

A general approach to the child with foot pain has been described. In that the pediatrician is so often the recipient of parent's questions about children's shoes, he or she should be aware of problems relating to poorly fitting shoes, probably the most common source of complaints of foot pain in children. With a systematic approach, the pediatrician is very capable of managing the majority of such complaints.
