INTRODUCTION: An increase in migration rates to the European Union has been observed over the last few years. Part of these migrants is undocumented. This work aimed to describe the reported frequency of infectious diseases and their associated factors among unselected samples of undocumented migrants in France.
METHODOLOGY: The Premier Pas survey is a cross-sectional epidemiological survey of a random sample (two-stage sample design) conducted among undocumented migrants recruited in Paris and the Bordeaux region, in places and facilities likely to be frequented by undocumented migrants. The

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize key findings from cardiovascular disease prevention trials at the 2025 American Heart Association (AHA) Scientific Sessions.
RECENT FINDINGS: In a phase 2 trial, DR10624, a novel triple agonist, rapidly led to significant reductions in triglycerides and liver fat in patients with severe hypertriglyceridemia (sHTG). The CORE-TIMI 72a and CORE2-TIMI 72b trials showed that olezarsen markedly lowered triglycerides and reduced the risk of acute pancreatitis in patients with severe hypertriglyceridemia. The VESALIUS-CV trial demonstrated that evolocumab significantly

INTRODUCTION: Despite sustained efforts to reduce opioid-related overdose fatalities, rates have continued to rise. In many areas, overdose response involves emergency medical service (EMS) personnel administering naloxone and transporting patients to the emergency department (ED). However, a substantial number of patients decline transport, and many EDs do not provide medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD). One approach to filling this gap involves delivering MOUD to overdose patients in the field with trained post-overdose EMS teams who can initiate buprenorphine. In this MOUD field initi

BACKGROUND: Drug dealers and drug users resort to body stuffing to hastily conceal illicit drugs by ingesting their drug packets. This practice represents a medical challenge because rupture of the often insecure packaging can be toxic and even lethal. In an emergency setting, official guidelines are needed to help the medical team decide on the proper treatment. A preliminary observation period is generally accepted but its duration varies from hours to eventual packet expulsion.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case involves a 20-year-old white man in detention who claimed to have ingested one cocai

BACKGROUND: Consumption of alcohol is associated with acute and chronic adverse health outcomes. There is a paucity of studies that explore the determinants of alcohol use among adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa and, in particular, that examine the effects of adverse childhood experiences on alcohol use.
METHODS: The paper draws on nationally-representative data from 9,819 adolescents aged 12-19 years from Burkina Faso, Ghana, Malawi, and Uganda. Logistic regression models were employed to identify correlates of self-reported past-year drunkenness. Exposure to four adverse childhood experienc

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 health crisis rapidly escalated into a broader social and economic emergency, affecting physical and mental health beyond the disease itself and placing a disproportionate burden on vulnerable populations. This study investigates the determinants of poor mental health related to COVID-19 among urban-poor homemakers residing in a social housing villa located on the outskirts of Santiago de Chile, a metropolitan city characterized by pronounced sociospatial segregation. METHODS: Capitalizing on the ongoing RUCAS cohort study, we introduced a COVID-19 module into the bian

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus in children, adolescents and young adults presents major clinical, social, and psychological challenges, particularly in low- and middle-income settings. Despite donor-supported access to free insulin and self-management supplies, many youths continue to have poor glycemic control. This study assessed barriers to glycemic control among Ghanaian youth with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, focusing on sociodemographic factors, institutional and family support, and stigma.
METHODS: A convergent cross-sectional mixed-methods study was conducted among 161 participants unde

Air pollution is a major global health threat, with children and young people (CYP) among the most vulnerable. Delhi (India) and Dhaka (Bangladesh) are two of the world's most polluted cities, with persistently high levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5). This study aimed to generate CYP-centered evidence on the real-time impacts of air pollution in these cities by comparing health, well-being, and daily activities during periods of high air pollution and good air quality, while also capturing CYP's ideas for air quality management. A cross-sectional, real-time digital survey was conducted

IMPORTANCE: In the 2022-2023 school year, more than 1 in 4 children in the US were chronically absent from school, doubling prepandemic rates. As a potential signal of underlying health and social challenges and a predictor of long-term health, this surge in absenteeism presents a pressing public health concern.
OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between chronic health needs, health-related social needs, and health-related school absenteeism among US school-aged children.

INTRODUCTION: People living with HIV (PLWH) may be exposed to harmful political, social, economic and environmental factors that exacerbate their risk of mental health conditions. Such factors can interact synergistically to worsen HIV and mental health-related outcomes, creating a syndemic. This study aims to review existing literature on mental health-related syndemics and their impact on HIV and mental health outcomes.
METHODS: CINAHL, Embase, MEDLINE, PsycInfo, Scopus and ProQuest were searched. We included observational studies that investigated a potential mental health-related syndemic

BACKGROUND: The United States (US) has the largest immigrant population globally. Immigrants endure social and structural factors that adversely influence cardiovascular health (CVH), a construct focused on health preservation, not merely the absence of disease, and defined by eight modifiable health factors and behaviors that support healthy longevity. We compared overall and individual CVH metrics between immigrants and non-immigrants and characterized CVH and its determinants among immigrant sub-populations.
METHODS: The analytic sample included 13,471 adults (19% immigrants, i.e., foreign

BACKGROUND: Care complexity can occur when patients experience health challenges simultaneously with social barriers including food and/or housing insecurity, lack of transportation or other factors that impact care and patient outcomes. People with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) may experience care complexity due to the chronicity of their condition and other biopsychosocial factors. There are few standardised instruments that measure care complexity and none that measure care complexity specifically in people with RA.
OBJECTIVES: We assessed the content validity of the INTERMEDS Self-Assessment

BACKGROUND: The criminalization of sex work and drug use creates unequal power dynamics easily exploited by police. Women who exchange sex (WES) in settings around the globe have reported coerced sex and sexual assault by police, and some have reported police as paying clients. Little research has examined nuances underlying WES's sexual interactions with police.
METHODS: A cohort of cisgender WES (N = 308) was recruited through targeted sampling in Baltimore, Maryland and completed a structured survey every 6 months for 18 months. Follow-up surveys included detailed questions about recent se

BACKGROUND: College students who experience the negative impact of poverty, such as food, financial, and housing insecurity, are at higher risk for poor academic performance. One recent study examined grief in a college student sample and found students with a diverse racial or ethnic background were more likely to experience prolonged grief disorder, however, did not examine poverty in their sample. To date, no known reviews have examined poverty by racial and ethnic identity and the experience of grief due to the death of a family member or friend, and no reviews have examined how these thre

BACKGROUND: Abortion-related complications are one of the five main causes of maternal mortality. However, research about abortion is very limited in fragile and conflict-affected settings. Our study aims to describe the magnitude and severity of abortion-related complications in two referral hospitals supported by Médecins Sans Frontières and located in such settings in northern Nigeria and Central African Republic (CAR).
METHODS: We used a methodology similar to the World Health Organization (WHO) near-miss approach adapted in the WHO multi-country study on abortion (WHO-MCS-A). We conducte

BACKGROUND: South Africa is reported to have the highest burden of HIV with an estimated 8.2 million people living with HIV (PLHIV) in 2021- despite adopting the World Health Organisation (WHO) universal HIV test and treat (UTT) recommendations in 2016. As of 2021, only an estimated 67% (5.5 million) of all PLHIV were accessing antiretroviral therapy (ART), as per recorded clinic appointments attendance. Studies in sub-Saharan Africa show that people living in low-income households experience multiple livelihood-related barriers to either accessing or adhering to HIV treatment including lack o

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence indicates that gender-based violence (GBV) increased during COVID-19. We investigated self-reported impact of the pandemic on GBV at community, household and intimate partner (IPV) levels among young people and its associations with psychosocial wellbeing, i.e., COVID-related stressors and mental health.
METHODS: Cross-sectional data were drawn from a survey with young people ages 13-24 (N = 536) living with HIV (YPLWH) and without HIV (YPLWoH), in peri-urban Cape Town, South Africa. The survey, conducted February-October 2021, examined the impact of the initial l
