Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a group of functional disorders of the masticatory system. Signs and symptoms of TMD are very common in different age groups in both genders. Treatment need varies greatly, ranging from 5 to 27% of the population. The treatment of TMD patients is generally initiated using reversible conservative methods and if necessary, irreversible and surgical methods are used. Altogether 123 patients (93 females, 30 males, mean age 39 years, range 12 to 72 years) were referred to the Oral and Maxillofacial Department of Oulu University Hospital between the years 2005 a

Quality control is very important in relation to invasive and lengthy treatments, such as integrated orthodontic and surgical correction of dentofacial deformities. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to compare self-reported somatosensory disturbances and quantitative sensory testing (QST) findings between two groups of patients and a healthy control group (n = 24); one group (n = 21) scheduled for bimaxillary orthognathic surgery (BOS) (pre-op) and one group (n = 24) examined 1(1/2) years after BOS (post-op). Self-reported data on pain and somatosensory disturbances were collected, and

Knowledge of the Eagle's syndrome shows that its symptoms can be very easily confused with other types of craniomandibular disorders, especially temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The aim of this study was to find a possible correlation between the presence of TMD and elongation of the styloid process as well relate to presence of calcification of the stilohyoid chain. Fifty patients with TMD, confirmed from the RDC/TMD, were examined clinically and radiographically. Radiographic documentation consisted of digital panoramic radiograph and digital lateral cephalometric radiograph. Radiocef soft

PURPOSE: The aim of this international AO-study was to compare the functional outcome after open versus closed treatment of mandibular condylar neck fractures.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective comparative study with two follow-ups (FU) at 8-12 weeks and 1 year was undertaken in two clinics, which exclusively privileged either surgical or conservative treatment due to different therapeutic agendas. Patients from clinic 1 (ENDO group) received endoscope-assisted transoral open reduction and internal fixation, whereas patients from clinic 2 (CONS group) were treated conservatively without sur

This study evaluated the use of a fixed orthodontic appliance in treatment of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) compared to the use of an intra-oral splint. Fifty (50) adult patients, with confirmed anterior disk displacement with reduction in at least one temporomandibular joint (TMJ), were divided into three groups: 20 patients treated with AR splint (Group I); 20 patients treated with a fixed orthodontic appliance (Group II) and 10 patients who underwent no treatment (Control Group). Joint pain, joint noise, muscle pain, and subjective relief were evaluated monthly before the treatment began

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: To test the hypotheses that 1) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided biopsy and aspiration with an open 0.2-T system (Magnetom Open, Siemens, Erlangen, Germany) in the head and neck is feasible and successful and 2) procedure times can be sufficiently short to be well tolerated by the patient.
METHODS: Sixty-one MRI-guided procedures were performed in 47 patients (ages, 6 mo-88 y) in the head and neck, including the mucosal sites and masticator and parapharyngeal spaces (n = 23), parotid space (n = 6), submandibular space (n = 2), cervical vertebral column/paraspinal t

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography-guided percutaneous selective radiofrequency thermocoagulation (RFT) of the trigeminal nerve is a novel, minimally invasive technique for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, but the high recurrence rate after surgery might pose a serious problem.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to explore the risk factors affecting the recurrence rate after RFT and to predict the recurrence rate and provide evidence for the early prediction.
STUDY DESIGN: A single-center retrospective study.
SETTING: This study was carried out in the Affiliated Hospital of Jiaxin

BACKGROUND: C-arm-guided percutaneous puncture balloon compression alone has risk factors of puncture failure, complications, and poor prognosis. Robot-assisted PBC can effectively increase the one-time puncture success rate and improve the safety of the procedure. However, evidence on the superiority of robot-assisted PBC over C-arm-guided PBC alone remains relatively limited.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis The clinical data of 60 patients with trigeminal neuralgia aged 60 years or older in the Department of Neurosurgery of the Fourth Hospital of Harbin Medical University from January 2021

Background/Objectives: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is the most common chronic rheumatic disease in childhood and may involve the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), sometimes with limited clinical manifestations. This report combines a narrative review of TMJ involvement in JIA with a 15-year follow-up of a patient with JIA-associated TMJ disease. The objectives were to summarize current evidence regarding the clinical assessment and management of TMJ involvement in JIA and to describe the relationship between long-term clinical and structural findings in an individual patient. Case Report:

BACKGROUND: Primary trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a common clinical refractory neuralgia. Severe pain is experienced during episodes, severely impacting the patient's quality of life. Long-term suffering from the disease can lead to anxiety, depression, and even suicide. The pathological processes involved in TN are complex, the mechanisms of pathogenesis are unknown, and effective treatment is lacking.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of computed tomography (CT)-guided pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) combined with low-temperature continuous radiofrequency (CRF) thermo

The Département de psychiatrie de l'Université de Montréal houses one of the first sleep centers founded 40 years ago. This center contributed to virtually every aspect of sleep medicine. It grew considerably over time to become one of the largest sleep centers worldwide. It is now called the Center for Advanced Research in Sleep Medicine (CARSM). Fourteen researchers and more than 30 research PhDs and postdoctoral fellows are working together in a 1,500 square-meter facility that includes separate units for fundamental and clinical studies and for the sleep disorders clinic. It has 10 polysom

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia is the most painful condition of facial pain leading to impairment of routine activities. Although radiofrequency thermoablation (RFT) of the Gasserian ganglion is widely used for the treatment of idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia in patients having ineffective pain relief with medical therapy, the incidence of complications like hypoesthesia, neuroparalytic keratitis, and masticatory muscles weakness is high. Recent case reports have shown the effectiveness of RFT of the peripheral branches of the trigeminal nerve for relief of refractory chronic facial pain con

Substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr) is a major output nucleus of the basal ganglia that receives GABAergic projections from neostriatum and globus pallidus. Previous research has shown that local pharmacological manipulations of GABA in SNr can influence tremulous jaw movements in rats. Tremulous jaw movements are defined as rapid vertical deflections of the lower jaw that resemble chewing but are not directed at a particular stimulus, and evidence indicates that these movements share many characteristics with parkinsonian tremor in humans. In order to investigate the role of GABA in motor

Two female patients, aged 14 years 5 months and 17 years 3 months with skeletal Class III open bite and temporomandibular dysfunction are presented. They had previously been classified as orthognathic surgical cases, involving first premolar removal. The primary treatment objective was to eliminate those skeletal and neuromuscular factors that were dominant in establishing their malocclusions. These included abnormal behavior of the tongue with short labial and lingual frenula, bilateral imbalance of chewing muscles, a partially blocked nasopharyngeal airway causing extrusion of the molars, wi

BACKGROUND: Temporo-mandibular disorders (TMD) is a collective term comprehending different clinical issues involving masticatory muscles, temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) and other associated structures. TMD diagnosis is not made for its pathogenesis or etiology, but mainly on clinical symptoms. Primary dysfunction develops mostly on four factors: individual predisposition, high psychomotor activity (due to stress or parafunction), occlusal instability and low or absent tissue adaptation capability. On the other hand, secondary disorders can be caused by hereditary or congenital diseases, rheum

Although most of the problems seen by the dentist in the hospital emergency room are not life-endangering, they can still cause considerable difficulty for the patient and anxiety for the doctor when not treated quickly and effectively. To manage an emergency effectively requires a prepared plan of action. Such planning must participation of the physicians, nurses, and auxiliary emergency room personnel. Since oral and maxillofacial emergencies may present unfamiliar problems to them, they must be instructed in advance about their role in proper care of such patients. Likewise, the dentist mus
