Association Between Aggression and Differential Functional Activity of Neural Regions Implicated in Retaliation.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of the current study was to determine the extent to which atypical neural responsiveness during retaliation is associated with observed aggression in youth in residential care. METHOD: This functional magnetic resonance imaging study involved 83 adolescents (56 male and 27 female; mean age, 16.18 years) in residential care performing a retaliation task. Of the 83 adolescents, 42 displayed aggressive behavior within the first 3 months of residential care, whereas 41 did not. During the retaliation task, participants were offered either fair or unfair divisions of $20 pots (

Genetic Disruption of System xc-Mediated Glutamate Release from Astrocytes Increases Negative-Outcome Behaviors While Preserving Basic Brain Function in Rat.

The importance of neuronal glutamate to synaptic transmission throughout the brain illustrates the immense therapeutic potential and safety risks of targeting this system. Astrocytes also release glutamate, the clinical relevance of which is unknown as the range of brain functions reliant on signaling from these cells hasn't been fully established. Here, we investigated system xc- (Sxc), which is a glutamate release mechanism with an in vivo rodent expression pattern that is restricted to astrocytes. As most animals do not express Sxc, we first compared the expression and sequence of the oblig

Orbitofrontal and striatal metabolism, volume, thickness and structural connectivity in relation to social anhedonia in depression: A multimodal study.

BACKGROUND: Social anhedonia is common within major depressive disorder (MDD) and associated with worse treatment outcomes. The orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is implicated in both reward (medial OFC) and punishment (lateral OFC) in social decision making. Therefore, to understand the biology of social anhedonia in MDD, medial/lateral OFC metabolism, volume, and thickness, as well as structural connectivity to the striatum, amygdala, and ventral tegmental area/nucleus accumbens were examined. A positive relationship between social anhedonia and these neurobiological outcomes in the lateral OFC was

Assessment of the Harmful Psychiatric and Behavioral Effects of Different Forms of Child Maltreatment.

IMPORTANCE: Several widely held beliefs about child abuse and neglect may be incorrect. It is most commonly assumed that some forms of abuse (eg, physical and sexual abuse) are more harmful than others (eg, emotional abuse and neglect); other assumptions are that each form of abuse has specific consequences and that the effects of abuse differ across sex and race. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether widely held assumptions about child abuse and neglect are valid by testing the hypothesis that different types of child maltreatment (CM) actually have equivalent, broad, and universal effects. DESIG

[Medicine in the concentration camps of the Third Reich].

Between 1942 and 1944 millions of prisoners were subjected to forced labor in concentration camps throughout the Third Reich, all the while being the victims of a systematic and "scientific" extermination policy. Though the policy was directed mainly against Jews, it was implemented against other "inferior races" as well. The prisoners, stripped of all rights, experienced constant humiliation, uncertain survival and terror. The harsh living condition, characterized by crowding, absent sanitation and poor personal hygiene led to considerable morbidity, mainly due to injuries, infectious disease

A Collective Efficacy Intervention to Promote Community Resiliency: Protocol for a Quasi-Experimental Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Community and youth violence are pervasive and have devastating health, economic, and social consequences. Violence too often impacts people of color and the life trajectories of youth in the United States, especially among people living in urban settings. OBJECTIVE: In response, this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel Community Resiliency Collective Efficacy Intervention (CRCEI), which seeks to increase individual and neighborhood levels of collective efficacy, and reduce youth and community violence. The CRCEI has three phases: (1) community organizing and mobil

Mental health status of children (14-17 years) in conflict with law residing in the correction homes in Bagmati Province, Nepal: a mixed method study.

BACKGROUND: Children in conflict with the law are predisposed to mental health difficulties as they are already a vulnerable, misunderstood, and frequently stigmatized group. This mixed method study assessed the prevalence and associated factors of Depression, Anxiety, and Stress (DAS) among children (14-17 years) in conflict with the law. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from December 2022 to March 2023 using a mixed method approach among children (14-17 years) in two correction homes of Bagmati Province. The census was conducted due to the small population size. Nepali version

Different depression: motivational anhedonia governs antidepressant efficacy in Huntington's disease.

Depression is more common in neurodegenerative diseases such as Huntington's disease than the general population. Antidepressant efficacy is well-established for depression within the general population: a recent meta-analysis showed serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants and mirtazapine outperformed other antidepressants. Despite the severe morbidity, antidepressant choice in Huntington's disease is based on Class IV evidence. We used complementary approaches to determine treatment choice for depression in Huntington's disease: propensity score analyses of ant

Who are those "risk-taking adolescents"? Individual differences in developmental neuroimaging research.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has illuminated the development of human brain function. Some of this work in typically-developing youth has ostensibly captured neural underpinnings of adolescent behavior which is characterized by risk-seeking propensity, according to psychometric questionnaires and a wealth of anecdote. Notably, cross-sectional comparisons have revealed age-dependent differences between adolescents and other age groups in regional brain responsiveness to prospective or experienced rewards (usually greater in adolescents) or penalties (usually diminished in adoles

Parenting: linking impacts of interpartner conflict to preschool children's social behavior.

Family conflict is known to have detrimental impacts on the social development of young children. An important issue in counseling parents and the development of intervention for children is the extent to which other family environmental conditions are the path through which conflict impacts children's development. This study examined two maternal parenting behaviors (harsh discipline and warmth) that may alter the impact of interpartner conflict on child social development and behavior in a large (n = 440 girls, n = 451 boys) sample of ethnically diverse, low-income families of preschool chil

Substance use and related behaviors among suburban late adolescents: the importance of perceived parent containment.

This study builds upon prior findings of elevated substance use among suburban high school students, examining the ramifications of different parenting dimensions on substance use and related behaviors. The sample consisted of 258 11th graders in an affluent suburban community. Parenting predictors considered included those well-studied previously such as monitoring and closeness, as well as two newer dimensions: perceived containment (stringency of anticipated reactions in reaction to negative behaviors) and perceived commitment (e.g., helping the child despite other commitments). Outcomes in

Current trends in the treatment of self-injurious behavior.

This chapter attempted to outline current trends and recent advances in the treatment of SIB. The major focus has been on the behavioral techniques, since it was obvious that at this stage other approaches have little to offer either diagnostically or therapeutically. It was pointed out, however, that these approaches and drug therapy in particular need further investigation before their role in the treatment of SIB can be adequately assessed. This chapter critically evaluated the current behavioral approaches in some depth and advanced several recommendations for future work. The general impr

Excusing exclusion: Accounting for rule-breaking and sanctions in a Swedish methadone clinic.

BACKGROUND: Methadone maintenance treatment has been subjected to much debate and controversy in Sweden during the last decades. Thresholds for getting access are high and control policies strict within the programmes. This article analyses how professionals working in a Swedish methadone clinic discuss and decide on appropriate responses to clients' rule-breaking behaviour. METHODS: The research data consist of field notes from observations of three interprofessional team meetings where different clients' illicit drug use is discussed. A micro-sociological approach and accounts analysis was

Epilepsy in children and young people as a stigma throughout history: identifying cultural, religious and educational factors to design strategies for contemporary social inclusion.

Epilepsy ranks among the most extensively stigmatized neurological conditions in recorded history, affecting an estimated 50 million people worldwide. This paper examines the historical transformation of stigma associated with epilepsy in children, adolescents, and young adults across cultural and chronological contexts ranging from Mesopotamian antiquity to the digital present. A qualitative design was employed in which a critical narrative review of the scholarly literature furnished the basis for a historical-critical analysis of primary sources. Medical texts, religious writings, and legal

Differences in Learning and Persistency Characterizing Behavior in Chronic Pain for the Iowa Gambling Task: Web-Based Laboratory-in-the-Field Study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain is a significant worldwide health problem. It has been reported that people with chronic pain experience decision-making impairments, but these findings have been based on conventional laboratory experiments to date. In such experiments, researchers have extensive control of conditions and can more precisely eliminate potential confounds. In contrast, there is much less known regarding how chronic pain affects decision-making captured via laboratory-in-the-field experiments. Although such settings can introduce more experimental uncertainty, collecting data in more eco
