Altered oculomotor signatures of emotional conflict and valence processing in late-life depression.

Late-life depression (LLD) is a heterogeneous neuropsychiatric condition characterized by affective, cognitive, and autonomic disturbances, underscoring the need for objective markers that index dysfunction in specific neural control systems. Microsaccades, small fixational eye movements generated through oculomotor circuitry that includes the superior colliculus, provide a temporally precise behavioral measure sensitive to arousal and cognitive control signals, yet their clinical relevance in LLD remains largely unexplored. In this study, we examined whether task-evoked microsaccade dynamics

TFOS DEWS III: Diagnostic Methodology.

A standard approach to the diagnosis of dry eye disease across eye care practitioners is critical to reassuring the patient, providing consistency between practitioners and informing governments as to the true prevalence and resulting healthcare needs. The Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society (TFOS) Dry Eye Workshop (DEWS) III has reviewed the evidence-base since their previous reports published in 2017 and revised the definition to "Dry eye is a multifactorial, symptomatic disease characterized by a loss of homeostasis of the tear film and/or ocular surface, in which tear film instability and h

Case report: Misdiagnosed orolingual dyskinesia as a consequence of seizures in a chorea-acanthocytosis patient with a novel VPS13A variation from a family with consanguineous marriage.

Chorea-acanthocytosis (ChAc) is a rare autosomal recessive inherited syndrome with heterogeneous symptoms, which makes it a challenge for early diagnosis. The mutation of VPS13A is considered intimately related to the pathogenesis of ChAc. To date, diverse mutation patterns of VPS13A, consisting of missense, nonsense, and frameshift mutations, have been reported. In this study, we first report a clinical case that was misdiagnosed as epilepsy due to recurrent seizures accompanied by tongue bite for 9 months, which was not rectified until seizures were controlled and involuntary orolingual move

RELAX-Jr: An Automated Pre-Processing Pipeline for Developmental EEG Recordings.

Automated EEG pre-processing pipelines provide several key advantages over traditional manual data cleaning approaches; primarily, they are less time-intensive and remove potential experimenter error/bias. Automated pipelines also require fewer technical expertise as they remove the need for manual artefact identification. We recently developed the fully automated Reduction of Electroencephalographic Artefacts (RELAX) pipeline and demonstrated its performance in cleaning EEG data recorded from adult populations. Here, we introduce the RELAX-Jr pipeline, which was adapted from RELAX and designe

Effectiveness and safety of Korean medicine treatment based on the clinical practice guidelines in patients with acute peripheral facial palsy: A protocol for a multicenter, prospective, observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral facial palsy (PFP) results in weakness or paralysis of the affected side of the face. In Korea, there is a high demand for Korean medicine treatment for PFP. The clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) of Korean medicine for facial palsy were developed; however, there remains insufficient evidence to support the effectiveness and safety of Korean medicine treatment. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Korean medicine treatment based on the CPGs in patients with acute PFP. METHODS: This is a multicenter, prospective, observational study. The

Syngeneic Transplantation of Rat Olfactory Stem Cells in a Vein Conduit Improves Facial Movements and Reduces Synkinesis after Facial Nerve Injury.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic facial paralysis is a disabling condition. Current surgical management by faciofacial nerve suture provides limited recovery. To improve the outcome, the authors evaluated an add-on strategy based on a syngeneic transplantation of nasal olfactory stem cells in a rat model of facial nerve injury. The main readouts of the study were the recording of whisking function and buccal synkinesis. METHODS: Sixty rats were allocated to three groups. Animals with a 2-mm facial nerve loss were repaired with a femoral vein, filled or not with olfactory stem cells. These two groups

Repeated Spiral Drawings in Essential Tremor: a Possible Limb-Based Measure of Motor Learning.

To investigate changes in tremor severity over repeated spiral drawings to assess whether learning deficits can be evaluated directly in a limb in essential tremor (ET). A motor learning deficit in ET, possibly mediated by cerebellar pathways, has been established in eye-blink conditioning studies, but not paradigms measuring from an affected, tremulous limb. Computerized spiral analysis captures multiple characteristics of Archimedean spirals and quantifies performance through calculated indices. Sequential spiral drawing has recently been suggested to demonstrate improvement across trials am

GABAA receptor modulating steroid antagonists (GAMSA) are functional in vivo.

GABAA receptor modulating steroid antagonists (GAMSA) selectively inhibit neurosteroid-mediated enhancement of GABA-evoked currents at the GABAA receptor. 3α-hydroxy-neurosteroids, notably allopregnanolone and tetrahydrodeoxycorticosterone (THDOC), potentiate GABAA receptor-mediated currents. On the contrary, various 3β-hydroxy-steroids antagonize this positive neurosteroid-mediated modulation. Importantly, GAMSAs are specific antagonists of the positive neurosteroid-modulation of the receptor and do not inhibit GABA-evoked currents. Allopregnanolone and THDOC have both negative and positive a

Disrupting reconsolidation of fear memory in humans by a noradrenergic β-blocker.

The basic design used in our human fear-conditioning studies on disrupting reconsolidation includes testing over different phases across three consecutive days. On day 1 - the fear acquisition phase, healthy participants are exposed to a series of picture presentations. One picture stimulus (CS1+) is repeatedly paired with an aversive electric stimulus (US), resulting in the acquisition of a fear association, whereas another picture stimulus (CS2-) is never followed by an US. On day 2 - the memory reactivation phase, the participants are re-exposed to the conditioned stimulus without the US (C

Early iron deficiency has brain and behavior effects consistent with dopaminergic dysfunction.

To honor the late John Beard's many contributions regarding iron and dopamine biology, this review focuses on recent human studies that test specific hypotheses about effects of early iron deficiency on dopamine system functioning. Short- and long-term alterations associated with iron deficiency in infancy can be related to major dopamine pathways (mesocortical, mesolimbic, nigrostriatal, tuberohypophyseal). Children and young adults who had iron deficiency anemia in infancy show poorer inhibitory control and executive functioning as assessed by neurocognitive tasks where pharmacologic and neu

Aversive imagery in panic disorder: agoraphobia severity, comorbidity, and defensive physiology.

BACKGROUND: Panic is characterized as a disorder of interoceptive physiologic hyperarousal, secondary to persistent anticipation of panic attacks. The novel aim of this research was to investigate whether severity of agoraphobia within panic disorder covaries with the intensity of physiological reactions to imagery of panic attacks and other aversive scenarios. METHODS: A community sample of principal panic disorder (n = 112; 41 without agoraphobia, 71 with agoraphobia) and control (n = 76) participants imagined threatening and neutral events while acoustic startle probes were presented and t

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) for treatment of alcohol dependence.

OBJECTIVES: Neuroimaging studies have found that alcohol dependent patients display dopaminergic dysfunction in the ventral striatum, which is associated with alcohol craving. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) was introduced as a promising new treatment option for depression, and among other neurobiological mechanisms, it is able to stimulate the striatal dopaminergic system. The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of high frequency rTMS of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex compared to sham stimulation on craving and mood in alcohol dependent women.
