Molecular Genetic Diversity and Combining Ability for Some Physiological and Agronomic Traits in Rice under Well-Watered and Water-Deficit Conditions.

Water deficit is a pivotal abiotic stress that detrimentally constrains rice growth and production. Thereupon, the development of high-yielding and drought-tolerant rice genotypes is imperative in order to sustain rice production and ensure global food security. The present study aimed to evaluate diverse exotic and local parental rice genotypes and their corresponding cross combinations under water-deficit versus well-watered conditions, determining general and specific combining ability effects, heterosis, and the gene action controlling important traits through half-diallel analysis. Feeding up to 91% concentrate to Holstein and Jersey dairy cows: Effects on enteric methane emission, rumen fermentation and bacterial community, digestibility, production, and feeding behavior.

Due to climate change, periods of drought might be longer and occur more frequently, which challenges roughage production and requires changed feeding of dairy cattle by increasing the grain content of the diet. This study investigated the effect of diets with concentrate proportions up to 91% of dry matter on dry matter intake (DMI), milk production, enteric methane emission, rumen fermentation, rumen bacterial community structure, nutrient digestibility, and feeding behavior of Holstein and Jersey dairy cows. Twelve Danish Holstein and 12 Danish Jersey cows were fed ad libitum with one of 3

Prevalence and associated factors of scabies among schoolchildren in Dabat district, northwest Ethiopia, 2018.

BACKGROUND: Scabies is a skin infestation caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei that causes a pruritic skin eruption. In Ethiopia, the disease is common especially during natural or manmade disasters such as flooding, drought, civil war and conflict, poor water supply and sanitation, and overcrowding living condition. Though scabies is becoming a major public health problem, especially in low resource settings, there has been no study that reported the prevalence of scabies in the study area. The aim of this study, therefore, was to assess the prevalence of scabies and associated factors among

Responses of late-lactation cows to forage substitutes in low-forage diets supplemented with by-products.

In response to drought-induced forage shortages along with increased corn and soy prices, this study was conducted to evaluate lactation responses of dairy cows to lower-forage diets supplemented with forage substitutes. By-product feeds were used to completely replace corn grain and soybean feeds. Forty-eight late-lactation cows were assigned to 1 of 4 diets using a randomized complete block design with a 2-wk covariate period followed by a 4-wk experimental period. The covariate diet contained corn grain, soybean meal, and 61% forage. Experimental diets contained chopped wheat straw (WS)/sug

First Report of Witches'-Broom Disease of Chinese Wingnut in China and its Association with a Phytoplasma of Aster Yellows Group (16SrI).

Pterocarya stenoptera C. DC., commonly known as Chinese wingnut, is a fast-growing deciduous tree with tough bark and attractive foliage. Because of its tolerance of compact and nutritionally poor soil, drought, and heat, Chinese wingnut is an important component of the biological diversity in natural ecosystems and is a favorable shade tree in China. Chinese wingnut has also been used as a rootstock for walnuts because of its high resistance to soilborne Phytophthora spp. In the spring of 2004, a disease characterized by witches'-broom symptoms was observed affecting Chinese wingnut trees gro

Insights into Endophytic and Rhizospheric Bacteria of Five Sugar Beet Hybrids in Terms of Their Diversity, Plant-Growth Promoting, and Biocontrol Properties.

Sugar beet is the most important crop for sugar production in temperate zones. The plant microbiome is considered an important factor in crop productivity and health. Here, we investigated the bacterial diversity of seeds, roots, and rhizosphere of five sugar beet hybrids named Eduarda (ED), Koala (KO), Tibor (T), Tajfun (TF), and Cercospora-resistant (C). A culture-independent next-generation sequencing approach was used for the further investigation of seed-borne endophytes. Hybrid-associated bacteria were evaluated for their plant growth-promoting (PGP) characteristics, antagonistic activit

Temporal genetic differentiation in Glossina pallidipes tsetse fly populations in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Glossina pallidipes is a major vector of both Human and Animal African Trypanosomiasis (HAT and AAT) in Kenya. The disease imposes economic burden on endemic regions in Kenya, including south-western Kenya, which has undergone intense but unsuccessful tsetse fly control measures. We genotyped 387 G. pallidipes flies at 13 microsatellite markers to evaluate levels of temporal genetic variation in two regions that have been subjected to intensive eradication campaigns from the 1960s to the 1980s. One of the regions, Nguruman Escarpment, has been subject to habitat alteration due to h

First Report of Barley yellow streak mosaic virus-Infected Barley in Alaska.

Barley yellow streak mosaic virus (BaYSMV) was first described and reported in Montana and Alberta, Canada, more than 17 years ago (1). Since then, it has been detected in two other locations: Pocatello Valley, ID (3), and across the border in Utah. BaYSMV has now been found in the Alaskan interior. In July 1999, dry-land barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) growing in University of Alaska-Fairbanks experimental plots exhibited symptoms similar to those described for BaYSMV, including parallel chlorotic streaks and leaf banding. Mechanical inoculation of Nicotiana benthamiana with diseased barley sap p

Fluid-structure interactions in the xylem: A nonlinear reaction-diffusion model of hydraulic segmentation and pressure-actuated microvalves.

While the Cohesion-Tension theory explains primary advective sap ascent, standard continuous models often neglect the mechanical regulatory role of bordered pits during secondary transport, such as capillary refilling. To address this, we model the conifer xylem as a network of pressure-actuated elastic microvalves governed by fluid-structure interactions. By coupling Darcy flow with state-dependent hydraulic capacitance and aquaporin-mediated transcellular refilling, we derive a macroscopic, asymmetric Fisher-Kolmogorov reaction-diffusion equation. Analytically, unimpeded fluid recovery propa

Potassium-driven coordination of carbon and nitrogen metabolism to enhance cotton fiber development under limited drip irrigation conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Cotton is the world's dominant natural fiber crop, and its production in arid oasis systems is widely constrained by drought. Potassium supplementation can alleviate water-deficit damage in cotton. However, the core mechanism linking potassium signaling to fiber carbon-nitrogen coordination and cellulose biosynthesis remains uncharacterized fiber. METHODS: Field experiments were conducted from 2021 to 2023 under two distinct drip irrigation regimes-conventional (500 mm, I500) and limited (425 mm, I425)-and three different potassium fertilization levels (low-potassium K1: 48 kg h

Genome-wide identification of BcMYB in Bupleurum Chinense DC. and its regulatory roles in saikosaponins synthesis under temperature stress.

BACKGROUND: MYB transcription factors play critical roles in secondary metabolite biosynthesis in medicinal plants and are crucial for abiotic stress responses. However, no studies have identified BcMYB genes in Bupleurum chinense DC. or analyzed their expression profiling under temperature stress. The role of BcMYB in B. chinense's response to temperature stress and its regulation of saikosaponins synthesis remains unclear. RESULTS: This study performed a genome-wide identification of the BcMYB gene family in B. chinense using its genomic data, and analyzed the changes in saikosaponins cont

Predictors and regional prevalence of food insecurity in Ethiopia during COVID-19: a multilevel analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Food insecurity is one of the most serious issues, especially in developing countries, that harm many public health outcomes through increased under nutrition, mental health problem, and premature mortality. It is widespread socio-economic problem of Ethiopia, with unequal distribution among its regions, during COVID-19 and other shock event manifestations for the last three years. This study aimed to analyse country-wise and region-specific food insecurity prevalence; assess its variation among regions; and identify predictors that influenced households' food insecurity in Ethio

Compound and cascading effects of climatic extremes on dengue outbreak risk in the Caribbean: an impact-based modelling framework with long-lag and short-lag interactions.

BACKGROUND: Small islands developing states in the Caribbean are exposed to increasingly frequent and intense extreme climatic events, which can exacerbate outbreaks of climate-sensitive infectious diseases. Few forecasting tools incorporate the compound and cascading effects of multiple delayed climatic indicators on disease outbreak risk. We aimed to create an impact-based modelling framework that employs interactions between climatic predictors to forecast the probability of a climate-sensitive infectious disease outbreak 3 months ahead, and to investigate the compound and cascading effects

Obesity during Pregnancy in the Horse: Effect on Term Placental Structure and Gene Expression, as Well as Colostrum and Milk Fatty Acid Concentration.

In horses, the prevalence of obesity is high and associated with serious metabolic pathologies. Being a broodmare has been identified as a risk factor for obesity. In other species, maternal obesity is known to affect the development of the offspring. This article is a follow-up study of previous work showing that Obese mares (O, n = 10, body condition score > 4.25 at insemination) were more insulin resistant and presented increased systemic inflammation during pregnancy compared to Normal mares (N, n = 14, body condition score < 4 at insemination). Foals born to O mares were more insulin-resi

Effect of increasing the proportion of chicory in forage-based diets on intake and digestion by sheep.

There is a lot of evidence that chicory could be a highly palatable and nutritious source of forage for ruminants, well adapted to climate change and dry conditions in summer, thanks to its resistance to drought and high water content. This study aimed to describe the effect of incorporating chicory to ryegrass or to a ryegrass-white clover mixture on feeding behaviour, digestive parameters, nitrogen (N) balance and methane (CH4) emissions in sheep. In total, three swards of ryegrass, white clover and chicory were established and managed in a manner ensuring the forage use at a constant vegeta

Elevated silver, barium and strontium in antlers, vegetation and soils sourced from CWD cluster areas: do Ag/Ba/Sr piezoelectric crystals represent the transmissible pathogenic agent in TSEs?

High levels of Silver (Ag), Barium (Ba) and Strontium (Sr) and low levels of copper (Cu) have been measured in the antlers, soils and pastures of the deer that are thriving in the chronic wasting disease (CWD) cluster zones in North America in relation to the areas where CWD and other transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) have not been reported. The elevations of Ag, Ba and Sr were thought to originate from both natural geochemical and artificial pollutant sources--stemming from the common practise of aerial spraying with 'cloud seeding' Ag or Ba crystal nuclei for rain making in th
