BACKGROUND: The criminalization of sex work and drug use creates unequal power dynamics easily exploited by police. Women who exchange sex (WES) in settings around the globe have reported coerced sex and sexual assault by police, and some have reported police as paying clients. Little research has examined nuances underlying WES's sexual interactions with police.
METHODS: A cohort of cisgender WES (N = 308) was recruited through targeted sampling in Baltimore, Maryland and completed a structured survey every 6 months for 18 months. Follow-up surveys included detailed questions about recent se

BACKGROUND: College students who experience the negative impact of poverty, such as food, financial, and housing insecurity, are at higher risk for poor academic performance. One recent study examined grief in a college student sample and found students with a diverse racial or ethnic background were more likely to experience prolonged grief disorder, however, did not examine poverty in their sample. To date, no known reviews have examined poverty by racial and ethnic identity and the experience of grief due to the death of a family member or friend, and no reviews have examined how these thre

BACKGROUND: Abortion-related complications are one of the five main causes of maternal mortality. However, research about abortion is very limited in fragile and conflict-affected settings. Our study aims to describe the magnitude and severity of abortion-related complications in two referral hospitals supported by Médecins Sans Frontières and located in such settings in northern Nigeria and Central African Republic (CAR).
METHODS: We used a methodology similar to the World Health Organization (WHO) near-miss approach adapted in the WHO multi-country study on abortion (WHO-MCS-A). We conducte

BACKGROUND: South Africa is reported to have the highest burden of HIV with an estimated 8.2 million people living with HIV (PLHIV) in 2021- despite adopting the World Health Organisation (WHO) universal HIV test and treat (UTT) recommendations in 2016. As of 2021, only an estimated 67% (5.5 million) of all PLHIV were accessing antiretroviral therapy (ART), as per recorded clinic appointments attendance. Studies in sub-Saharan Africa show that people living in low-income households experience multiple livelihood-related barriers to either accessing or adhering to HIV treatment including lack o

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence indicates that gender-based violence (GBV) increased during COVID-19. We investigated self-reported impact of the pandemic on GBV at community, household and intimate partner (IPV) levels among young people and its associations with psychosocial wellbeing, i.e., COVID-related stressors and mental health.
METHODS: Cross-sectional data were drawn from a survey with young people ages 13-24 (N = 536) living with HIV (YPLWH) and without HIV (YPLWoH), in peri-urban Cape Town, South Africa. The survey, conducted February-October 2021, examined the impact of the initial l

BACKGROUND: Depression is one of the most prevalent mental disorders among an estimated 25.6 million people living with HIV (PLHIV) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The depression rate is higher in HIV-seropositive men who have sex with men (MSM) regardless of their sexual orientation, identity or romantic attraction. This is due to various types of stigma including HIV-related stigma, social stigma, self-stigma and mental health stigma. Opportunistic infections, unemployment, poverty and food insecurity also predispose HIV-seropositive MSM to depression. Moreover, depression in heterosexual and s

IMPORTANCE: The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is an important source of nutritional support and education for women and children living in poverty; although WIC participation confers clear health benefits, only 50% of eligible women and children currently receive WIC. In 2010, Congress mandated that states transition WIC benefits by 2020 from paper vouchers to electronic benefits transfer (EBT) cards, which are more convenient to use, are potentially less stigmatizing, and may improve WIC participation.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate the state-level ass

INTRODUCTION: In the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in Liberia, two major emergency disease-control measures were cremation of bodies and enforcement of quarantine for asymptomatic individuals suspected of being in contact with a positive case. Enforced by State-related actors, these were promoted as the only method to curtail transmissions as soon as possible. However, as with other harsh measures witnessed by Liberian citizens, in many cases those measures elicited uncontrolled negative reactions within the communities (stigma; fear) that produced, in some cases, the opposite effect of t

BACKGROUND: Community-based organizations interested in members' health may lack data to develop culturally-appropriate, evidence-based interventions. Community leaders perceived the need for a health survey, developed and administered in partnership with research scientists, to address mental health concerns of black African immigrants and refugees (principally depression).
OBJECTIVES: The goals of the project were: development of a community health survey for African immigrant and refugee populations; translation, piloting and administering the survey, and descriptive analyses and dissemina

BACKGROUND: A gender gap exists in knowledge regarding persons living with HIV/AIDS in Ghana. Women living with HIV/AIDS (WLHIV) greatly outnumber males living with HIV/AIDS (MLHIV) in Ghana and Sub-Saharan Africa generally. This necessitates more gender-nuanced evidence-based information on HIV/AIDS to guide individuals, healthcare workers, and other stakeholders in Ghana particularly. This paper undertook a gender-focused analysis of the experiences of WLHIV and MLHIV in a municipal area in Ghana which has been most impacted by HIV/AIDS.
METHODS: In-depth interviews of 38 HIV-positive perso

BACKGROUND: A small number of cross-sectional studies have found that financial insecurity-a social determinant of health-is associated with lower urinary tract symptoms.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine (1) whether women in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adult Study with higher levels of financial strain, assessed at 7 time points across 25 years beginning in 1985-1986, were more likely to report lower urinary tract symptoms and impact after the 2010-2011 financial strain assessment and (2) whether healthcare access and comorbidities mediated potential associations.

PURPOSE OF STUDY: This quality improvement project was designed to close a gap in capturing health literacy in adult patients with heart failure discharged from a hospital system. An opportunity existed to investigate if health literacy levels contribute to individuals' social factors and overall health. A priority focus was evident across healthcare organizations to address the social determinants of health (SDOH) for the populations served. Throughout the literature, limited health literacy is associated with higher hospital readmission rates. Pre-implementation data included 2023 heart fail

INTRODUCTION: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection can impact the physical health and psychological well-being of those who are infected and requires effective long-term management to achieve viral suppression. A patient's ability to seek care is largely influenced by social determinants of health (SDOH) and the provider's ability to help manage social needs.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to elucidate how SDOH impacts the provider's practice and well-being. We also assessed how provider burnout, which is significantly associated with feeling emotional exhaustion, plays a role in the pat

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a challenging disease due to its multifactorial pathogenesis. However, sexual health is a poorly explored aspect in these patients, and the interaction between eating behavior, psychological factors, and sexual function remains insufficiently characterized, although it may represent a key aspect in clinical management.
AIMS: To provide a characterization of psychological, eating, and sexual function characteristics of patients with obesity through an exploratory analysis.
METHODS: A cross-sectional, single-center study was carried out at Umberto I Hospital of Sapienza

BACKGROUND: Climate change continues to manifest at an unprecedented rate and is increasingly recognized as a serious threat to reproductive, maternal, and child health. This qualitative study aims to explore community and healthcare workers’ perspectives on the impacts of climate change and related extreme weather events on reproductive, maternal, and child health outcomes in Kilwa District, Tanzania. METHODS: In October 2024, a cross-sectional qualitative study design was employed where 10 focus group discussions with women and 15 key informant interviews with healthcare workers in 10 flood-

BACKGROUND: Most children with developmental disabilities (DD) live in low- and middle-income countries, but access to services is limited, impacting their ability to thrive. Pilot study findings of the World Health Organization's Caregiver Skills Training (WHO CST) intervention, which equips caregivers with strategies to facilitate learning and adaptive behaviours in children with DD, are promising but evidence from an appropriately powered trial delivered by non-specialist facilitators is lacking. This study will investigate the effectiveness and the resource impacts and costs and consequenc

BACKGROUND: South Africa has a high burden of perinatal common mental disorders (CMD), such as depression and anxiety, as well as high levels of poverty, food insecurity and domestic violence, which increases the risk of CMD. Yet public healthcare does not include routine detection and treatment for these disorders. This pilot study aims to evaluate the implementation outcomes of a health systems strengthening (HSS) intervention for improving the quality of care of perinatal women with CMD and experiences of domestic violence, attending public healthcare facilities in Cape Town.

BACKGROUND: Chronic childhood malnutrition, or stunting, remains a persistent barrier to achieve optimal cognitive development, child growth and ability to reach full potential. Almost half of children under-five years of age are stunted in the province of Sindh, Pakistan.
OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that the provision of lipid-based nutrient supplement-medium-quantity (LNS-MQ) known as Wawamum will result in a 10% reduction in risk of being stunted at the age of 24 months in the intervention group compared with the control group.
DESIGN: A clust

IMPORTANCE: Families have limited access to pediatric weight management services.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of enhanced standard of care (ESOC) with family-based behavioral treatment (FBT) vs ESOC alone in reducing percent over median body mass index (percent median BMI) among children and adolescents with obesity. ESOC+FBT was hypothesized to reduce relative weight more than would ESOC alone.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a pragmatic, comparative-effectiveness randomized clinical trial (2019-2024). Data collectors were blinded, and patients were followed up at 18
