Multidimensional assessment of exertional dyspnea in young healthy males and females who select unsatisfied inspiration at peak exercise.

Historically, it was thought that healthy humans predominantly described their breathing as a sense of increased work or effort (W/E) during maximal exercise. However, emerging data show that many healthy adults select unpleasant dyspnea descriptors such as "unsatisfied inspiration" (UI), with relatively more females selecting UI than males. We hypothesized that males and females who select UI would report higher dyspnea intensity ratings during exercise, select more distressing dyspnea qualities post exercise, and have greater inspiratory constraints than those who do not. Sixty-four healthy,

Bone health in transgender assigned female at birth people: effects of gender-affirming hormone therapy and gonadectomy.

INTRODUCTION: Gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) and gender-affirming surgery (GAS) may be desired by transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) individuals who want to affirm their gender identity. Testosterone is the basis of GAHT for transgender individuals assigned female at birth (AFAB), whereas GAS can involve hysterectomy, bilateral salpingectomy, bilateral oophorectomy (BO), thorax masculinization, and phalloplasty. Our study aimed to evaluate the effects of GAHT on the bone health of TGD AFAB individuals who have undergone or not undergone BO. METHODS: This was a single-center, longit

A systematic review of the evaluation of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in the Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) fish.

Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) is an acceptable small laboratory fish model for the evaluation and assessment of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) found in the environment. In this research, we used this fish as a potential tool for the identification of EDCs that have a significant impact on human health. We conducted an electronic search in PubMed (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed) and Google Scholar (https://scholar.google.com/) using the search terms, Japanese medaka, Oryzias latipes, and endocrine disruptions, and sorted 205 articles consisting of 128 chemicals that showed potent

Androgens and child behavior: Color and toy preferences in children with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH).

Human males and females show average gender/sex differences for certain psychological phenomena. Multiple factors may contribute to these differences, including sex chromosomes, exposure to gonadal hormones, and socialization or learning. This study investigated potential hormonal and socialization/learning influences on gender/sex differences in childhood preferences for color, specifically pink and red vs. blues, and for toys. Children (aged 4 to 11 years) with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH, n = 43 girls and 37 boys), marked by elevated prenatal adrenal androgen exposure, and without C

Molecular genetic analysis of AKR1C2-4 and HSD17B6 genes in subjects 46,XY with hypospadias.

BACKGROUND: The formation of the male urethra depends to enzyme-mediated testosterone (T) conversion into 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Two metabolic pathways could be operating in the fetal testis to synthesize androgens: 1) the "classic" route (T→DHT) mediated by SRD5A2 and 2) a "backdoor" pathway in which DHT is synthesized by aldo-keto reductase family 1, member C2 (AKR1C2), AKR1C3, and AKR1C4 enzymes without formation of a T intermediate. OBJECTIVE: We studied four genes of the "backdoor" pathway in karyotypic males with hypospadias to ascertain whether gene defects in AKRs impair urethr

Self- and proxy-reported outcomes after surgery in people with disorders/differences of sex development (DSD) in Europe (dsd-LIFE).

BACKGROUND: Surgery is performed in many individuals with disorders/differences of sex development (DSD). Irreversibility of some surgical procedures, lack of information about the procedures, and lack of follow-up care for physical and psychological outcomes, lead to wish for more knowledge from both surgeons and patients. After the consensus conference in 2006, multidisciplinary care is provided to a higher degree with psychological support and more restricted surgical procedures. Outcome studies after genital surgery often lack of patient's perspective. OBJECTIVE: To describe surgical proc

In utero exposure to simvastatin reduces postnatal survival and permanently alters reproductive tract development in the Crl:CD(SD) male rat.

We showed previously that in utero exposure to the cholesterol-lowering drug simvastatin (SMV) during sex differentiation lowers fetal lipids and testicular testosterone production (T Prod) in Hsd:SD rats. Here, the effects of SMV on fetal lipids and T Prod in Crl:CD(SD) rats were correlated with postnatal alterations in F1 males. The current study was conducted in two parts: 1) a prenatal assessment to confirm and further characterize the dose response relationship among previously reported alterations of SMV on fetal T Prod and the fetal lipid profile and 2) a postnatal assessment to determi

Genders and Individual Treatment Progress in (Non-)Binary Trans Individuals.

BACKGROUND: Health care for transgender and transsexual (ie, trans) individuals has long been based on a binary understanding of gender (ie, feminine vs masculine). However, the existence of non-binary or genderqueer (NBGQ) genders is increasingly recognized by academic and/or health care professionals. AIM: To gain insight into the individual health care experiences and needs of binary and NBGQ individuals to improve their health care outcomes and experience. METHODS: Data were collected using an online survey study on experiences with trans health care. The non-clinical sample consisted of

Developmental treatment with ethinyl estradiol, but not bisphenol A, causes alterations in sexually dimorphic behaviors in male and female Sprague Dawley rats.

The developing central nervous system may be particularly sensitive to bisphenol A (BPA)-induced alterations. Here, pregnant Sprague Dawley rats (n = 11-12/group) were gavaged daily with vehicle, 2.5 or 25.0 μg/kg BPA, or 5.0 or 10.0 μg/kg ethinyl estradiol (EE2) on gestational days 6-21. The BPA doses were selected to be below the no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) of 5 mg/kg/day. On postnatal days 1-21, all offspring/litter were orally treated with the same dose. A naïve control group was not gavaged. Body weight, pubertal age, estrous cyclicity, and adult serum hormone levels were mea

[Personality tests and gender identification in male transsexuals].

The aim of this research project was to study gender identification in male transsexuals compared to male and female controls, using the Rorschach test and the MMPI. In the international literature, many researches have shown that the nature of the human response on Rorschach card III is linked to gender identification, as is the MMPI Mf scale. Ten untreated male homosexual transsexuals and 18 treated and operated male homosexual transsexuals were compared to 10 male and 12 female controls regarding verbal IQ, human content on Rorschach card III and the MMPI Mf scale. Absence of hormonal treat

Reduced expression and normal nucleotide sequence of androgen receptor gene coding and promoter regions in a family with partial androgen insensitivity syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS) is an X-linked disorder of XY males characterized by varying degrees of impaired masculinization. In many AIS cases, mutations have been identified in the coding sequence of the human androgen receptor (AR) gene which impair receptor function. Cases have also been reported in which reduced AR mRNA expression may contribute to AIS in association with AR gene mutations. The purpose of this study was to define the molecular basis of AIS in members of a family with clinical and laboratory features of partial androgen insensitivity (P

Steroidal regulation of biologically active luteinizing hormone secretion in men and women.

The biological activity of circulating luteinizing hormone (LH) molecules can be assessed with high sensitivity, specificity, and precision by the in-vitro rat interstitial (Leydig)-cell testosterone (RICT) bioassay. Compared to immunoreactive estimates of the LH content of plasma, the living Leydig-cell bioassay integrates the functional in-vitro potency of all circulating LH isoforms, while simultaneously reflecting the effects of otherwise potentially confounding in-vivo antagonists of LH action on steroidogenesis. Here, we review the pathophysiological regulation by steroid hormones of bio

Prosthetics, Medicine, and Disability in Modern America: The Case of the A. A. Marks Artificial Limb Company.

Through the case of the A. A. Marks Artificial Limb Company, this article explores how the technology and business of prosthetics grew in America up to the First World War. In 1853, Amasa A. Marks established the artificial limb company A. A. Marks in New York. By the time of the First World War, the company had become the largest supplier of artificial limbs in the United States and had gained international recognition, exporting its products all over the world. Focusing on the company's growth before the war, this paper analyzes how American artificial limb makers positioned themselves betwe

Feminine figures: body image and physical characteristics in trans women after puberty suppression and subsequent estradiol therapy.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have demonstrated an improvement in body image following gender-affirming hormone treatment (GAHT). In transgender girls, puberty suppression (PS) can be initiated before GAHT to prevent masculinization. AIM: The aim of this study is to assess body image, self-esteem and its determinants in trans women who received PS prior to GAHT. METHODS: Forty-two trans women from a specialized gender clinic who initiated treatment <18 years were included in this cross-sectional study of whom 23 initiated PS in early puberty (Tanner stage G2-3), and 19 in late puberty (Tanner

Inpatient staff experiences of providing treatment for males with a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder: A thematic analysis.

UNLABELLED: WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: We know that there are similar rates of borderline personality disorder (BPD) diagnosed in both men and women; however, some research suggests that BPD is diagnosed later and less frequently in men. Some research suggests that males diagnosed with BPD present differently to women, but not much is known about how this influences the care men receive in inpatient mental health hospitals. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: This paper is the first to specifically ask inpatient staff about men diagnosed with BPD, and to hear about their perception

Serum metabolomics profiling by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry of the response to single oral macronutrient challenges in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) compared with male and female controls.

BACKGROUND: The polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is associated with insulin resistance, obesity and cardiometabolic comorbidities. We here challenged the hypothesis, using state-of-the-art proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry (1H-NMRS) metabolomics profiling, that androgen excess in women induces a certain masculinization of postprandial metabolism that is modulated by obesity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants were 53 Caucasian young adults, including 17 women with classic PCOS consisting of hyperandrogenism and ovulatory dysfunction, 17 non-hyperandrogenic women presenting with

Growth and reproductive development of male piglets are more vulnerable to midgestation maternal stress than that of female piglets.

In many mammalian species, prenatal stress masculinizes female and feminizes male offspring impairing their reproductive capacity. Regrouping gestating sows is a common, stressful production practice, but its impact on the developing pigs of the sow is not fully known. This study examined the effects of regrouping gestating sows and the administration of exogenous glucocorticoids on the growth and external reproductive morphology of pigs. At 37.2 ± 0.26 d of gestation, 6 cohorts of 18 sows (N = 108) were placed in 1 of 3 treatments: socially stable (Stable), hydrocortisone acetate (HCA), or mi
