Comparison of coated and uncoated trace elements on growth performance, apparent digestibility, intestinal development and microbial diversity in growing sheep.

The suitable supplement pattern affects the digestion and absorption of trace minerals by ruminants. This study aimed to compare the effects of coated and uncoated trace elements on growth performance, apparent digestibility, intestinal development and microbial diversity in growing sheep. Thirty 4-month-old male Yunnan semi-fine wool sheep were randomly assigned to three treatments (n = 10) and fed with following diets: basal diet without adding exogenous trace elements (CON), basal diet plus 400 mg/kg coated trace elements (CTE, the rumen passage rate was 65.87%) and basal diet plus an equal

Short communication: A pilot study to describe duodenal and ileal flows of nutrients and to estimate small intestine endogenous protein losses in weaned calves.

The aims of this pilot study were (1) to evaluate the effect of an ileal and duodenal cannulation surgery on body weight and dry matter intake, (2) to estimate endogenous losses of crude protein (CP) and AA in the small intestine, and (3) to describe duodenal and ileal flows of nutrients in weaned dairy calves. Three Holstein male calves were fitted at 7 wk of life with a T-cannula at the terminal ileum and another cannula at the proximal duodenum. On wk 14 of life, calves were randomly assigned to a single 3 × 3 Latin square with 10-d periods. The 3 diets were fed ad libitum and consisted of

Feeding supplemental dried distiller's grains increases faecal shedding of Escherichia coli O157 in experimentally inoculated calves.

Escherichia coli O157 is an important foodborne pathogen and asymptomatic cattle serve as major reservoirs for human infection. We have shown a positive association between feeding distiller's grains and E. coli O157 prevalence in feedlot cattle. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of feeding dried distiller's grain (DDG) on faecal shedding of E. coli O157 in calves experimentally inoculated with E. coli O157. Holstein calves (five per treatment group), fed steam-flaked corn-based high-grain diets supplemented with 0% (control) or 25% DDG, were orally inoculated with a five

Subacute ruminal acidosis induces inflammation, autophagy, and apoptosis by disrupting Ca2+ homeostasis via STIM1/ORAI1 upregulation in mammary gland tissues.

Subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) is a prevalent metabolic disorder in ruminants that induces mastitis, while Ca²⁺ homeostasis disruption is closely linked to mammary gland diseases. This study aimed to uncover the role of Ca²⁺ signaling in SARA-induced mammary gland injury by investigating its regulation of inflammation, autophagy, and apoptosis. In this study, we induced SARA by feeding a high-concentrate (HC, 70% concentrate) diet to Hu sheep (pH<5.6 for more than 3 h). The diets were administered over a period of 56 d. We collected samples of blood and mammary gland tissues from the animals

Metabolic responses, performance, and reticuloruminal pH of early-lactating cows fed concentrates treated with lactic acid, with or without inorganic phosphorus supplementation.

Recent data indicate beneficial effects of treating grains with lactic acid (LA) in alleviating the need for inorganic phosphorus supplementation during ruminal fermentation in vitro. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of feeding concentrates treated with LA with or without inorganic phosphorus supplementation on feed intake, performance, blood variables, and reticuloruminal pH in dairy cows. A total of 16 early-lactating cows (12 Simmental and 4 Brown Swiss) were included in this study from d 1 until d 37 postpartum. Cows were fed 3 total mixed rations differing in supplementat

Effects of feeding calves genetically modified corn bt11: a clinico-biochemical study.

Genetically modified corn Bt11 is insect-resistant and expresses Cry1Ab toxin, an insecticidal protein, in kernels. Although Bt11 corn is considered safe based on animal performance, there are no reports available on the clinico-biochemical effects of feeding it to cattle. In this study, we evaluated the effects of feeding Bt11 to calves, using blood and ruminal clinico-biochemical parameters. Our three-month-long feeding experiment demonstrated that calves (n=6), fed with a ration containing 43.3% of Bt11 corn kernels as dry matter, did not develop any discernible clinical, hematological, bio

Soybean oil supplementation of a high-concentrate diet does not affect site and extent of organic matter, starch, neutral detergent fiber, or nitrogen digestion, but influences both ruminal metabolism and intestinal flow of fatty acids in limit-fed lambs.

Our objective was to measure ruminal fermentation characteristics and site and extent of nutrient digestion in sheep limit-fed an 81.6% (DM basis) concentrate diet supplemented with increasing levels of soybean oil. Eight white-faced wether lambs (39.9+/-3.0 kg BW) fitted with ruminal, duodenal, and ileal cannulas were used in a replicated 4 x 4 Latin square experiment. Diets were formulated to contain 15.0% CP (DM basis) and included bromegrass hay (18.4%), cracked corn, soybean oil, corn gluten meal, urea, and limestone. Soybean oil was added to diets at 0, 3.2, 6.3, and 9.4% of dietary DM.

Ruminal paramphistomosis in cattle from northeastern Algeria: prevalence, parasite burdens and species identification.

Slaughterhouse samples were analysed over a two-year period (September 2010-August 2012) in Jijel (northeastern Algeria) in order to determine seasonal variations in the prevalence and intensity of bovine paramphistomosis in a Mediterranean climate and identify paramphistome species using molecular biology. In spring and summer, significantly higher prevalences and lower parasite burdens were noted in bull calves, thus indicating an effect of season on these parameters. In contrast, the differences among seasonal prevalences or among seasonal parasite burdens were not significant in the case o

Effects of feeding frequency on intake, ruminal fermentation, and feeding behavior in heifers fed high-concentrate diets.

Four ruminally fistulated Holstein heifers (BW = 385 +/- 6.2 kg) were used in a 4 x 4 Latin square experiment to determine the effect of feeding frequency on intake, water consumption, ruminal fermentation, and feeding and animal behavior. The treatments consisted of different feeding frequencies: a) once daily (T1); b) twice daily (T2); c) 3 times daily (T3); and d) 4 times daily (T4). Heifers were offered ad libitum access to concentrate and barley straw. Feeding frequency did not affect DMI (P >0.10), but water consumption tended to increase linearly as feeding frequency increased (P = 0.08

Immune modulation by helminth parasites of ruminants: implications for vaccine development and host immune competence.

Parasitic helminths reside in immunologically-exposed extracellular locations within their hosts, yet they are capable of surviving for extended periods. To enable this survival, these parasites have developed complex and multifaceted mechanisms to subvert or suppress host immunity. This review summarises current knowledge of immune modulation by helminth parasites of ruminants and the parasite-derived molecules involved in driving this modulation. Such immunomodulatory molecules have considerable promise as vaccine targets, as neutralisation of their function is predicted to enhance anti-para

Comparison of Bacterial Community in the Jejunum, Ileum and Cecum of Suckling Lambs During Different Growth Stages.

Given that suckling lambs with immature rumen development rely on intestinal microbiota for nutrient utilization, investigating the composition and functional characteristics of their intestinal microbiota is therefore of paramount importance. In this study, 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing technology was adopted to characterize and analyze the diversity and composition of the jejunum, ileum and cecum bacterial communities of lambs at 0, 7 and 28 days of age, and to predict the functions of the bacterial communities. The α-diversity analysis results revealed that in the jejunum of lambs, the

Overexpression of 2-mercaptoethanesulfonate biosynthesis genes comDE protects methane-producing archaea from oxidative stress.

UNLABELLED: Coenzyme M (2-mercaptoethane sulfonate, CoM) is an essential low-molecular-weight thiol in methanogenic archaea (methanogens) that serves as a methyl carrier and as a component of CoM-S-S-CoB heterodisulfide comprising CoM and coenzyme B (7-mercaptoheptanoylthreoninephosphate), which serves as the terminal electron acceptor in methanogenesis. Increasing the amount of CoM in Methanosarcina acetivorans cells by overexpressing its proposed biosynthesis genes results in faster growth on methanol or methanol + acetate medium in the absence of sulfide. Furthermore, CoM overproduction enh

Metabolic profile of Charolais young bulls transported over long-distance.

Long-distance transport can cause stress to beef cattle impairing health and growth performances. This study aimed to deepen the knowledge of the effects of long-distance transport on young bulls' metabolic profile to identify reliable blood parameters for monitoring their health and welfare. Eighty Charolais young bulls, transported for 12 hours to the final fattening unit, were weighed and blood sampled at three time intervals: before leaving the commingling centre (day -1), upon arrival at the fattening unit (day 0), and 7 days post-arrival (day 7). These bulls were part of a larger study a

Sialic acid exacerbates gut dysbiosis-associated mastitis through the microbiota-gut-mammary axis by fueling gut microbiota disruption.

BACKGROUND: Mastitis is one of the most severe diseases in humans and animals, especially on dairy farms. Mounting evidence indicates that gastrointestinal dysbiosis caused by induction of subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) by high-grain diet consumption and low in dietary fiber is associated with mastitis initiation and development, however, the underlying mechanism remains unknown. RESULTS: In the present study, we found that cows with SARA-associated mastitis have altered metabolic profiles in the rumen, with increased sialic acids level in particular. Consumption of sialic acid (SA) in anti

Influence of probiotic supplementation on parasitological parameters in lambs.

The control of parasitosis is based on the use of anthelmintics. However, its long-term and indiscriminate use can select populations of resistant nematodes. New alternatives such as probiotics are being studied to solve this problem. This study aimed to investigate the effects of an oral probiotic containing six different bacterial strains and the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae on the blood biochemistry, parasitological, and histological parameters of naturally infected lambs. Forty-two weaned Texel or Ile de France crossbred lambs aged 86.9 ± 8.0 days and weighing 27.4 ± 3.7 kg were randomly
