To honor the late John Beard's many contributions regarding iron and dopamine biology, this review focuses on recent human studies that test specific hypotheses about effects of early iron deficiency on dopamine system functioning. Short- and long-term alterations associated with iron deficiency in infancy can be related to major dopamine pathways (mesocortical, mesolimbic, nigrostriatal, tuberohypophyseal). Children and young adults who had iron deficiency anemia in infancy show poorer inhibitory control and executive functioning as assessed by neurocognitive tasks where pharmacologic and neu

BACKGROUND: Panic is characterized as a disorder of interoceptive physiologic hyperarousal, secondary to persistent anticipation of panic attacks. The novel aim of this research was to investigate whether severity of agoraphobia within panic disorder covaries with the intensity of physiological reactions to imagery of panic attacks and other aversive scenarios.
METHODS: A community sample of principal panic disorder (n = 112; 41 without agoraphobia, 71 with agoraphobia) and control (n = 76) participants imagined threatening and neutral events while acoustic startle probes were presented and t

OBJECTIVES: Neuroimaging studies have found that alcohol dependent patients display dopaminergic dysfunction in the ventral striatum, which is associated with alcohol craving. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) was introduced as a promising new treatment option for depression, and among other neurobiological mechanisms, it is able to stimulate the striatal dopaminergic system. The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of high frequency rTMS of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex compared to sham stimulation on craving and mood in alcohol dependent women. OBJECTIVE: Classical conditioning features prominently in many etiological accounts of panic disorder. According to such accounts, neutral conditioned stimuli present during panic attacks acquire panicogenic properties. Conditioned stimuli triggering panic symptoms are not limited to the original conditioned stimuli but are thought to generalize to stimuli resembling those co-occurring with panic, resulting in the proliferation of panic cues. The authors conducted a laboratory-based assessment of this potential correlate of panic disorder by testing the degree to which panic patients and healt

PURPOSE: This preliminary study investigated a means of concurrently assessing the visual field defects of both eyes by recording pupillary responses to multifocal stimuli.
METHODS: Twenty normal subjects and 26 primary open angle glaucoma patients, age and sex matched, were examined by slit-lamp, Humphrey Field Analyser II achromatic 24-2 perimetry and fundus photography. The patients had moderate to severe fields in at least one eye. Two stereoscopically arranged displays presented an array of 24 stimulus regions per eye extending from fixation to 30 degrees eccentricity. Pupil responses we

Cerebral cortical neural networks associated with eyelid movement play a critical role in facial animation, contribute to the regulation of blink frequency, and help prevent ocular injury. Eyelid closure depends, in part, on motoneurons that innervate the orbicularis oculi (OO) muscles. In this study, OO motoneuron cortical afferents were identified in rhesus monkeys with rabies virus, a retrograde transneuronal tracer. Virus was injected into the right OO muscle and immunohistochemically localized after 4-6 day transport intervals. Labeled motoneurons were limited to dorsal portions of the ip

OBJECTIVES: To systematically record rat facial nerve recovery following crush injury to the main trunk with respect to ocular and vibrissial function and to compare the rates of facial and sciatic nerve recovery from crush injury in the same animals. This serves as a means of validating the functional parameters of facial nerve recovery against the well-known measure of hind limb function, the Sciatic Function Index.
METHODS: The main trunk of the facial nerve and the proximal segment of the sciatic nerve were exposed in all animals. Both nerves were subjected to standardized crush injury an

OBJECTIVE: The authors describe a new and simple procedure, the Micro-Reflux Test (MRT), to screen for primary acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction (PANDO). This study sought to determine the reliability of this new test in the diagnosis of complete nasolacrimal duct obstruction.
DESIGN: A nonrandomized, prospective, self-controlled, comparative case series.
PARTICIPANTS: Two hundred eyes of 100 patients with documented unilateral complete PANDO were examined.
INTERVENTION: The MRT was performed by a masked examiner on both eyes of each patient. Two drops of 0.25% sodium fluorescein dye w

The facial nerve has a specific anatomical feature in that it pursues a relatively long course through a bony canal, originating in the fundus of the internal auditory meatus, until emerging at the stylomastoid foramen. Facial nerve palsy, which is often observed clinically, exhibits a high recovery rate of facial movement. There is no consensus, however, as to the influence of the anatomical features of the facial nerve on the pathological evolution of the palsy. The purpose of this study is to investigate how histological alterations, following injury of the nerve, are influenced by the anat

Twenty-three 2- to 5-month-old Beagle dogs were fed a purified thiamine-deficient ration (2 to 3 micrograms of thiamine/100 g of ration) at a rate of 40 to 70 g/kg of body weight/day depending on age. Eleven dogs were used as principles, 6 as pair-fed controls, and 6 as ad libitum-fed controls. Controls were treated once a week with an IM dose of 300 micrograms of thiamine hydrochloride/kg of body weight. Three stages of clinical disease occurred in the principals: (i) an initial short (18.0 +/- 7.9 days) stage of induction, during which the dogs usually grew suboptimally, but were otherwise h

INTRODUCTION: Primidone and propranolol are primary treatments for essential tremor, however the exact mechanisms underlying their efficacy are not fully elucidated. Understanding how these medications alleviate tremor may guide the development of additional pharmacologic treatments. Our prospective observational study employed transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to explore mechanisms of primidone and propranolol effects in essential tremor. Eyeblink classical conditioning (EBCC) was tested as a potential predictor of treatment response.
METHODS: Patients with essential tremor underwent t

Neuroimaging studies have identified the superior parietal lobules bilaterally as the neural substrates of reduced visual attention (VA) span in developmental dyslexia. It remains however unclear whether the VA span deficit and the deficits in temporal and spatial attention shifting also reported in dyslexic children reflect a unitary spatio-temporal deficit of attention - probably linked to general posterior parietal dysfunction- or the dysfunction of distinct attentional systems that relate to different neural substrates. We explored this issue by testing an adult patient, IG, with a specifi

We report the clinical and electrophysiological findings in seven patients with orthostatic myoclonus (OM) associated with gait initiation failure and falls. OM is one of the causes of unsteadiness of stance and gait, and it may develop as a symptom of neurodegenerative disorders. Both positive myoclonic bursts and negative myoclonus may be seen in electrophysiological recordings, and electrophysiological analysis suggests a subcortical origin for OM.

Tumors of the eyelid region are a special entity within the tumors of head and neck. Their early recognition and histologic classification helps to avoid extensive and destructive surgery, which is particularly challenging with regard to the surgical repair of those defects. In 58% of the patients with eyelid tumors treated at Fachklinik Hornheide between 2002 and 2006, a malignant neoplasia was diagnosed. In eyelid surgery, particular principles need to be observed. Provided those guidelines are strictly observed, even extensive defects of the upper or lower eyelid can be repaired in an aesth

The current study examined emotional reflex reactions of participants threatened with respiratory distress caused by imposing a resistive load at inspiration. Cues signaling threat (breathing MAY be difficult) and safe periods were intermixed while startle reflexes, heart rate, skin conductance, and facial EMG activity were measured. Compared to safe cues, threat cues elicited significant startle potentiation, enhanced skin conductance, heightened corrugator EMG changes, and pronounced "fear bradycardia" consistent with defensive activation in the context of threatened respiratory dysfunction.

OBJECTIVE: To study the changes in facial nerve function, morphology and neurotrophic factor 3 expression in response to three types of nerve injury.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Changes in facial nerve function (in terms of blink reflex, vibrissae movement and position of nasal tip) were assessed in 45 rats in response to three types of nerve injury: partial section of the extratemporal segment (group one); partial section of the facial canal segment (group two); and complete transection of the facial canal segment (group three). All facial nerves were then dissected out from the sacrificed animal

We have proposed a hypothetical mechanism to involuntarily sustain the effective eyelid retraction, which consists of not only voluntary but also reflexive contractions of the levator palpebrae superior muscle (LPSM). Voluntary contraction of fast-twitch fibres of the LPSM stretches the mechanoreceptors in Mueller's muscle to evoke trigeminal proprioception, which induces continuous reflexive contraction of slow-twitch fibres of the LPSM through the trigeminal proprioceptive nerve fibres innervating the mechanoreceptors in Mueller's muscle via the oculomotor neurons, as a tonic trigemino-oculo

The human startle response is modulated by affective states. The startle response is facilitated in unpleasant, aversive context, such as fear, and reduced during pleasure. This association can be explored by simple technical methods. The modulation of startle is found also in animal. It offers the opportunity to investigate human emotional processes by a biologically based, language free paradigm.

We prospectively evaluated the adverse reactions of apraclonidine in 20 normal volunteers by instilling a single drop of 1% apraclonidine in their right eyes. Examinations, including blood pressure, pulse rate, conjunctiva and cornea, intraocular pressure (IOP), pupil diameter, basal tear secretion and margin reflex distance of both upper and lower eyelids, were performed prior to entry and at 1, 3, 5 and 7 hours after instillation. The ocular hypotensive effects were statistically significant for apraclonidine-treated eyes throughout the study and also statistically significant for contralate
