Dengue virus importation risks in Africa: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Dengue is a significant global public health concern that poses a threat in Africa. Particularly, African countries are at risk of viral introductions through air travel connectivity with areas of South America and Asia in which explosive dengue outbreaks frequently occur. Limited reporting and diagnostic capacity hinder a comprehensive assessment of continent-wide transmission dynamics and deployment of surveillance strategies in Africa. In this study, we aimed to identify African airports at high risk of receiving passengers with dengue from Asia, Latin America, and other African

Genotypic and phylogeographic insights into a pre-epidemic variant of Wesselsbron virus detected in sylvatic Aedes mcintoshi from Semuliki Forest, Uganda.

Wesselsbron virus (WSLV) is a neglected mosquito-borne virus within the yellow fever subgroup in the genus Orthoflavivirus of the Flaviviridae family. Despite being primarily a veterinary pathogen able to cause stillbirths, congenital malformations, and mortality in ruminants, WSLV also infects humans, causing a usually self-limiting febrile illness, or may lead to neurological complications in rare cases. WSLV causes sporadic outbreaks in Southern Africa, but findings in mosquitoes from other African countries suggest a wider distribution. Here, we report the detection and isolation of WSLV f

Ivermectin as a novel complementary malaria control tool to reduce incidence and prevalence: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Ivermectin is a potential new vector control tool to reduce malaria transmission. Mosquitoes feeding on a bloodmeal containing ivermectin have a reduced lifespan, meaning they are less likely to live long enough to complete sporogony and become infectious. We aimed to estimate the effect of ivermectin on malaria transmission in various scenarios of use. METHODS: We validated an existing population-level mathematical model of the effect of ivermectin mass drug administration (MDA) on the mosquito population and malaria transmission against two datasets: clinical data from a cluster

Circulating levels of the neuropeptide hormone somatostatin may determine hepatic fibrosis in Schistosoma mansoni infections.

The neuropeptide hormone somatostatin reduces fibrosis and Schistosoma-caused clinical morbidity in the rodent model. In our study we aimed to delineate an association between fibrosis and the inability to generate critical levels of endogenous somatostatin in S. mansoni infected subjects. In June 2001, 85 subjects from the district dispensary at Richard Toll in the Medical Region of Saint-Louis, Senegal, were selected. Fifty-seven subjects were infected with S. mansoni of whom 32 were suffering from severe morbidity (SM). Twenty-eight subjects showed an inactive disease status with no evident

Global risk of selection and spread of Plasmodium falciparum histidine-rich protein 2 and 3 gene deletions.

In the thirteen years since the first report of pfhrp2-deleted parasites in 2010, the World Health Organization (WHO) has found that 40 of 47 countries surveyed worldwide have reported pfhrp2/3 gene deletions. Due to a high prevalence of pfhrp2/3 deletions causing false-negative HRP2 RDTs, in the last five years, Eritrea, Djibouti and Ethiopia have switched or started switching to using alternative RDTs, that target pan-specific-pLDH or P. falciparum specific-pLDH alone of in combination with HRP2. However, manufacturing of alternative RDTs has not been brought to scale and there are no WHO pr

CD55 Facilitates Immune Evasion by Borrelia crocidurae, an Agent of Relapsing Fever.

Relapsing fever, caused by diverse Borrelia spirochetes, is prevalent in many parts of the world and causes significant morbidity and mortality. To investigate the pathoetiology of relapsing fever, we performed a high-throughput screen of Borrelia-binding host factors using a library of human extracellular and secretory proteins and identified CD55 as a novel host binding partner of Borrelia crocidurae and Borrelia persica, two agents of relapsing fever in Africa and Eurasia. CD55 is present on the surface of erythrocytes, carries the Cromer blood group antigens, and protects cells from comple

Evidence on the prevalence, incidence, mortality and trends of human papilloma virus-associated cancers in sub-Saharan Africa: systematic scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Human papilloma virus (HPV) associated cervical cancer remains a global concern particular, in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) where the impact is felt most. Evidence show that many other cancers such as vaginal, anal, oropharyngeal, penile are because of persistent infection with HPV especially, high-risk types. AIM: We mapped evidence on the incidence, prevalence, mortality, and the trends of human papillomavirus-related cancers in SSA. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted from several databases including PubMed, Google scholar, Science Direct, and CINAHL and MEDLI

Reconstructive surgery after female genital mutilation: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Women who have undergone female genital mutilation rarely have access to the reconstructive surgery that is now available. Our objective was to assess the immediate and long-term outcomes of this surgery. METHODS: Between 1998 and 2009, we included consecutive patients with female genital mutilation aged 18 years or older who had consulted a urologist at Poissy-St Germain Hospital, France. We used the WHO classification to prospectively include patients with type II or type III mutilation. The skin covering the stump was resected to reveal the clitoris. The suspensory ligament was

Distinguishing features of anti-beta2 glycoprotein I antibodies between patients with leprosy and the antiphospholipid syndrome.

Anticardiolipin (ACA), anti-beta2 glycoprotein I (beta2GPI), and antiprothrombin antibodies of IgG and IgM classes were quantitated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays in 176 untreated leprosy patients across the histopathological spectrum. Positivity rates ranged from 21% (IgG ACA) to 30% (IgM anti-prothrombin) versus 4% in healthy controls (p <10(-2) to 10(-3)). Levels of IgM anti-beta2GPI and IgG ACA were significantly higher in lepromatous leprosy and multibacillary patient subgroups. IgG3 was the most common subclass reactive to both beta2GPI and prothrombin in selected high-titer lepro

[Intracranial and cranial complications of paranasal sinusitis. Report of 4 cases at the Lomé University Hospital Center].

The complications of paranasal sinusitis are rare (only 4 cases have been observed during 5 years). The acute frontal sinusitis is the most frequent cause. The diagnosis of the frontal osteitis and the extradural abscess is made during the course of the surgical intervention. An antibiotherapy combining an ampicillin and a gentamicin is used. The treatment of the complication and the causative sinusitis is a guarantee of recovery.

A Functional Intronic Variant of LILRB1 Associated With Clinical Malaria in the Senegalese Population.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa. Host genetic variation influences susceptibility, but the contribution of inhibitory receptors such as LILRB1-targeted by Plasmodium falciparum RIFINs-remains poorly defined. We investigated whether regulatory variants in LILRB1 modulate malaria risk. METHODS: Regulatory variants were prioritized from African expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) datasets by integrating linkage disequilibrium, chromatin accessibility, and transcription factor binding. Three noncoding variants (rs10416697, rs10423364, and rs724653

Assessing the nonhuman primate reservoir of Schistosoma mansoni in Africa: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Reports of natural infections of Schistosoma mansoni in a number of species of nonhuman primates (NHPs) in Africa, coupled with the substantial overlap of NHP habitats and human schistosomiasis endemic areas, has led to concerns about the role of NHPs in the transmission of human schistosomiasis. We conducted a systematic review of the literature to describe the current scope of knowledge for Africa, for the NHP species implicated, their geographical distribution, infection rates with S. mansoni, and to discuss the implications for public health and conservation. [Malaria is still a leading cause of fever and death among children and pregnant women in Africa in 2015].

The prevalence and morbidity of P. vivax, P. ovale (curisi et wallikeri) and P. malariae remain underestimated. However important progress has been made. According to the WHO World Malaria report between 2000 and 2015 the malaria incidence has decreased by 42% while the incidence of malaria deaths has decreased by 66%. This is the result of the important progress made in scaling up the main interventions such the rapid diagnosis test, Artemisinin-based combination therapies, long lasting insecticide treated nets, indoor residual house spraying, intermittent preventive treatment during pregnanc

Trends of major disease outbreaks in the African region, 2003-2007.

BACKGROUND: Communicable disease outbreaks cause millions of deaths throughout Sub-Saharan Africa each year. Most of the diseases causing epidemics in the region have been nearly eradicated or brought under control in other parts of the world. In recent years, considerable effort has been directed toward public health initiatives and strategies with a potential for significant impact in the fight against infectious diseases. In 1998, the World Health Organization African Regional Office (WHO/AFRO) launched the Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) strategy aimed at mitigating the

Religious and cultural traits in HIV/AIDS epidemics in sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: The pandemic of HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa and the rise of epidemics in Asia to the previously unforeseen level are likely to have global social, economic, and political impacts. In this emergency, it is vital to reappraise the weight of powerful religious and cultural factors in spreading the disease. The role of Islam in shaping values, norms, and public policies in North African states is to be appreciated for the lowest HIV prevalence in their populations. Yet, the place of religion in prevention of the disease diffusion is not fully understood nor worldwide acknowledged by
