Vector potential of houseflies (Musca domestica) for Helicobacter pylori.

The mode of transmission of Helicobacter pylori is unknown. Since viable bacteria have been shown to be excreted in feces from infected individuals and houseflies habitually develop and feed on excrement, we hypothesized that flies ingest and harbor H. pylori and, in turn, contaminate the human environment. This study examined the possible vector potential of houseflies (Musca domestica) for H. pylori. Caged houseflies were exposed to freshly grown H. pylori on agar plates. After a 6-h feeding period, the plates were removed and were replaced with sterile petri dishes containing a droplet of s

Orotic acid, arginine, and hepatotoxicity.

This communication presents evidence from the literature and recent experiments that describe circumstances wherein arginine may be a conditional dietary essential. Previous work has established that the synthesis of orotic acid (OA), the first pyrimidine formed in the de novo pathway of nucleic acid synthesis, becomes elevated whenever the ammonia load exceeds the capacity of the urea cycle. Under these circumstances, the common intermediate, carbamyl phosphate, leaks from the mitochondria and induces OA synthesis in the cytoplasm. This leads to increased OA excretion in the urine as pyrimidi

The best gastric site for obtaining a positive rapid ureas test.

BACKGROUND: Rapid ureas tests (RUTs) provide a simple, sensitive method of detecting Helicobacter pylori infection. OBJECTIVES: Our aim, therefore, was to determine whether the yield of detecting H. pylori infection by RUT varied depending on the site of gastric biopsy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Gastric biopsies were obtained from 50 patients for RUT by use of hpfast (GI Supply, Camp Hill, PA). Biopsies were taken from the prepyloric greater curve antrum, from the gastric angle, and from the greater curve in mid-corpus. One biopsy specimen was placed in the RUT gel, and the biopsy from the adja

Helicobacter pylori and luminal gastric pH. Relationships in nonulcer dyspepsia.

The relationships between gastric pH and Helicobacter pylori infection were studied in 37 consecutive subjects affected with nonulcer dyspepsia. Each underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy with multiple gastric biopsies for both H. pylori and histologic assessment, and 24-hr antral pH monitoring. H. pylori was harbored by 59.5% of the subjects with whole gastric spread of infection in all but one patient. Histologic gastritis was shown in 70.3% of the subjects. H. pylori was strongly associated with gastritis, both antral nonatrophic and multifocal atrophic. The ranges of 24-hr pH values were 1.

Infection with CagA-positive Helicobacter pylori strain containing three EPIYA C phosphorylation sites is associated with more severe gastric lesions in experimentally infected Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus).

Infection with Helicobacter pylori strains containing high number of EPIYA-C phosphorylation sites in the CagA is associated with significant gastritis and increased risk of developing pre-malignant gastric lesions and gastric carcinoma. However, these findings have not been reproduced in animal models yet. Therefore, we investigated the effect on the gastric mucosa of Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus) infected with CagA-positive H. pylori strains exhibiting one or three EPIYA-C phosphorilation sites. Mongolian gerbils were inoculated with H. pylori clonal isolates containing one or thr

Did transmission of Helicobacter pylori from humans cause a disease outbreak in a colony of Stripe-faced Dunnarts (Sminthopsis macroura)?

Since the discovery that Helicobacter pylori causes a range of pathologies in the stomachs of infected humans, it has become apparent that Helicobacters are found in a diverse range of animal species where they are frequently associated with disease. In 2003 and 2004, there were two outbreaks of increased mortality associated with gastric bleeding and weight-loss in a captive colony of the Australian marsupial, the Stripe-faced Dunnart (Sminthopsis macroura). The presence of gastric pathology led to an investigation of potential Helicobacter pathogenesis in these animals. Histological examinat

Reflux esophagitis or Helicobacter infection? - diagnostic value of the inflammatory pattern in metaplastic mucosa at the squamocolumnar junction.

OBJECTIVES: Metaplastic glandular mucosa with goblet cells at the squamocolumnar junction is induced either by reflux or by Helicobacter infection. We investigated whether the accompanying inflammation may give information about the etiology of these metaplastic changes and whether there are further criteria which are helpful in differentiating Helicobacter-induced vs. reflux-caused metaplasia. METHODS: One hundred and nine patients with intestinal metaplasia diagnosed in biopsies obtained immediately below the Z-line were evaluated. Further biopsies were taken from the gastric body and antru

Effects of Post-infection Supplementation with Lactiplantibacillus plantarum CRD7 and Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus CRD11 on Helicobacter pylori Virulence Gene Expression in a Rat Model of Gastric Infection.

Helicobacter pylori infects nearly half of the global population and causes gastritis through virulence factors such as CagA and VacA. Increasing antibiotic resistance has reduced the effectiveness of conventional eradication therapies, highlighting the need for alternative strategies, including probiotics. This study evaluated the effects of post-infection supplementation with Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus, or their combination on cagA and vacA mRNA expression in a rat model of H. pylori infection. Male Wistar rats (n = 40) were randomly assigned to five groups (

Exploring the functional resilience of cyanobacterial multifunctional biofilms and their use as seed coatings under elevated CO2.

Cyanobacteria possessing both carbon-concentrating and nitrogen-fixing mechanisms, offer a unique platform to explore their biofertilizing and elevated CO2 (eCO2) ameliorating potential, simultaneously towards enriching soil and improving plant vigour. Multispecies biofilms combining Anabaena torulosa (An) with Trichoderma viride (Tr), and either Providencia sp. (PW5) or Pseudomonas nitroreducens (B3), exhibit additional functional traits, which can also be explored as climate resilient inoculation strategies in rice. This was illustrated in terms of enhancement in chlorophyll (1.82-fold) in A

Effects of biogas slurry-borne antibiotics and polypropylene microplastics on the rhizosphere microbiome and metabolome of Hybrid Pennisetum.

Antibiotic residues in biogas slurry and microplastic contamination are increasingly occurring in agricultural soils. However, their combined effects on rhizosphere ecological processes remain poorly understood. In this study, the individual and combined effects of polypropylene microplastics (PP-MPs, 1% w/w) and biogas slurry (BS, 0.5% w/w) on the rhizosphere soil of Hybrid Pennisetum were investigated by conducting an integrated analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequencing and untargeted metabolomics. The results revealed that PP-MPs alone significantly reduced soil bacterial α-diversity and inhibit

Candida serves as a reservoir associating with facilitating the survival and pathogenesis of Helicobacter pylori.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a key pathogen in gastritis and gastric ulcers, noted for its high recurrence rates. H. pylori internalization into Candida vacuoles may enhance its survival and pathogenicity. In this study, we investigated the intrinsic association between H. pylori and Candida by performing H. pylori-related assays on Candida isolates obtained from clinical fecal samples, gastric mucosal tissues, and vaginal secretions. About 399 isolates of Candida were isolated from fecal samples of patients with digestive diseases. H. pylori antigens in feces and 16S rDNA within Candida

6-Aminoflavone Inhibits Planktonic Growth, Disrupts Biofilm Architecture, and Regulates Quorum Sensing in Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Antibiotic resistance has emerged as a major global health challenge, particularly in biofilm-forming pathogens that exhibit enhanced tolerance to antimicrobial therapies. K. pneumoniae, a multidrug-resistant pathogen, is a leading cause of hospital-acquired infections, including pneumonia, septicemia, and device-associated infections. Its robust biofilm-forming capacity facilitates immune evasion, restricts antibiotic penetration, and contributes to recurrent infections. Therefore, the identification of agents capable of targeting both planktonic bacterial growth and biofilm architecture is o

Anti-Helicobacter pylori and Anti-Inflammatory Sesquiterpenoids from the Rhizoma of Atractylodes macrocephala.

Helicobacter pylori, a spiral-shaped bacterium found in the stomach, is associated with various gastrointestinal and systemic health conditions. Effective suppression of H. pylori is therefore critical for managing gastrointestinal diseases. In a search for natural products with anti-H. pylori activity, the extract of Atractylodes macrocephala rhizoma showed significant inhibitory effects. Chromatographic purification of A. macrocephala extract yielded thirteen compounds, which were identified as ten sesquiterpenes and three polyacetylenes by spectroscopic analysis. The sesquiterpene compounds
