We present a case of an 85-year-old female who developed an acute abdominal lump and pain after pulling herself up from a car seat. She experienced a sudden "pop" sensation, followed by a palpable periumbilical lump. Imaging revealed a large, infected collection in the left anterior abdominal wall. The patient underwent urgent incision and drainage, which was completed successfully without complications. Histological analysis of wound discharge confirmed acute inflammation without malignancy. This case underscores the need for early recognition and intervention in elderly patients presenting w

Burkholderia pseudomallei, the causative agent of melioidosis can be responsible for a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations and heterogeneous prognoses, with a high mortality in the acute onset. We report a case of a deep abdominal abscess with sepsis secondary to melioidosis in a young farmer from a non-high-risk population. Emergency medical treatment was administered according to the detection of serum antibodies against Hcp1, the results of which provided etiological evidence of B. pseudomallei infection for the timely and properly antimicrobial therapy in the absence of direct evidenc

BACKGROUND: Severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) is a common critical disease of the digestive system. In addition to the clinical manifestations and biochemical changes of acute pancreatitis, SAP is also accompanied by organ failure lasting more than 48 h. SAP is characterized by focal or extensive pancreatic necrosis, hemorrhage and obvious inflammation around the pancreas. The peripancreatic fat space, fascia, mesentery and adjacent organs are often involved. The common local complications include acute peripancreatic fluid collection, acute necrotic collection, pancreatic pseudocyst, walled off

INTRODUCTION: Small bowel diverticular disease is uncommon, representing 1-2% of general population. The ileum diverticulum is very rare, especially if it is complicated by enterocutaneous fistula with abdominal wall abscess.
PRESENTATION OF THE CASE: Here, we report a case of small bowel diverticulum, ileum diverticulum with enterocutaneous fistula in a 65-year man presented with lower abdominal pain and an irreducible swelling for 5 days.
DISSECTION: Diverticulosis has no exact cause, but theoretically the diverticula result from peristalsis abnormalities, intestinal dyskinesia, or high se

BACKGROUND: Acute appendicitis is the most frequent surgical urgency in children. Frequently, it can be complicated with an intraabdominal abscess that will require a longer and expensive treatment. Our aim is to know if it is possible to predict this complication before its beginning.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective case-control study with patients treated between 2011 and 2016, paired according to their own characteristics (age, sex and weight), clinical aspects (symptoms, time of their onset, physical examination) and type of appendicitis (gangrenous). The main variable was the appeara

Pancreatitis indicates inflammation of the pancreas. Clinically acute pancreatitis typically presents as upper abdominal pain mostly in epigastric region, nausea, vomiting and elevated levels of amylase and lipase. Depending upon severity of acute pancreatitis patient may presents with minimal symptoms to more severe signs of acute abdomen like generalized guarding and rigidity. Inspite of absence of disease-specific signs and symptoms for acute pancreatitis, diagnosis is usually not difficult using a combination of clinical, laboratory and radiological findings. Sometimes pancreatitis may pre

OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the clinical characteristics and surgical treatment of intra-abdominal abscess in patients with Crohn disease(CD).
METHODS: Clinical data of 39 patients with CD complicated with intra-abdominal abscess from 2000 to 2005 were analyzed retrospectively.
RESULTS: The cumulative incidence of intra-abdominal abscesses was 27.5%. Of the 39 CD patients with abscess, 61.5% had surgery the time of present study. The mean age of the patients with abscesses was (34.7+/- 12.3) years, and the duration of illness from the onset of CD until development of an abscess was (0-22) years,

During the past 10 years, 15 patients have had percutaneous catheter drainage (PCD) of pyogenic liver abscesses (PLA) at a major teaching hospital. Five PLA were related to biliary tract disease, two were secondary to colonic diverticulitis, two developed after abdominal surgery, and the remaining were associated with hepatic trauma, gastric ulcer, Crohn's ileitis, and colon cancer. Two abscesses were cryptogenic. Mean diameter of PLA was 8 cm and ranged from 2-14 cm. Three patients had multiple PLA. All patients were initially treated by PCD without major complications. However, one patient r

UNLABELLED: Clostridioides (formerly Clostridium) difficile infection is a common and costly healthcare-associated infection. Extraintestinal C. difficile infection is rarely encountered, especially in isolation. We present a unique case of abdominal wall abscess presenting six months following gastrointestinal (GI) surgery. The patient was managed with computed tomography (CT) guided drainage of the abscess, placement of a drainage catheter, and aggressive broad-spectrum antibiotic treatment for a prolonged duration over multiple admissions.
LEARNING POINTS: Risk factors for extraintestinal

Actinomycosis is a rare, chronic, suppurative, and granulomatous bacterial disease. The Actinomyces species exist as normal flora in the oropharynx, gastrointestinal tract, and the female genital tract. They are incapable of penetrating the normal mucous membranes and become pathogenic only when this barrier has been destroyed by trauma, surgery, immunosuppression, or after viscus perforation. We report the first case of an actinomycotic abscess after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. A 29-year-old man underwent a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy with no intra-operative complications. On postope

BACKGROUND: Appendectomy, the surgical removal of the appendix, is performed primarily for acute appendicitis. Patients who undergo appendectomy for complicated appendicitis, defined as gangrenous or perforated appendicitis, are more likely to suffer from postoperative complications. The routine use of abdominal drainage to reduce postoperative complications after appendectomy for complicated appendicitis is controversial. This is an update of the review first published in 2015.

BACKGROUND: Abscesses involving the inguinal region are uncommon as manifestations of complex soft-tissue infections or intra-abdominal pathology, and the routes by which they cause infection are usually unclear and may be overlooked.
METHODS: A comprehensive review of reports in the English language literature of the clinical presentations, outcomes, and causes of abscess in the inguinal/groin area requiring surgical intervention. The cases of 33 patients, including 30 patients in 27 reports in the literature and 3 patients in the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital at Chia-Yi, were reviewed to det

Systemic infectious complications following adenotonsillectomy are exceedingly rare. We describe an otherwise healthy 2-year-old patient who developed group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus sepsis and presumptive scarlet fever 3 days after an uncomplicated adenotonsillectomy. After resolution of fever, rash, and discharge home on antibiotics, the patient returned on postoperative day 10 with an abdominal wall abscess. This is the first reported case of an abdominal wall abscess as a complication of adenotonsillectomy. This case demonstrates that an awareness of unexpected infectious complication

An unusual case is described in which an abdominal wall and thigh abscess was an initial symptom of ascending colon cancer. A 76-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for investigation of fever and abdominal and thigh swelling. Computed tomography revealed a right abdominal wall, retroperitoneal, psoas and thigh abscess formation suspected to be caused by colon perforation. Due to the patient's poor general condition, local drainage of the abscess was performed on the following day of hospitalization. Histological examination of necrotic tissues removed form the retroperitoneal cavity de

We present a case of tubo-ovarian abscess (TOA) caused by Clostridioides difficile (CD) in a 43-year-old female. Despite lacking a history of sexually transmitted diseases, the patient had undergone paraovarian cystectomy nine months before admission. Transvaginal ultrasonography performed eight months post-surgery revealed left ovarian enlargement, accompanied by subsequent lower abdominal pain and fever exceeding 38 °C. As oral antibiotic treatment was ineffective, the patient was admitted to our hospital. Computed tomography upon admission revealed a massive TOA. Surgical drainage of the ab

BACKGROUND: Pylephlebitis, a rare and lethal form of portal venous septic thrombophlebitis, often arises from infections in regions drained by the portal vein. Herein, we report a case of peritonitis with portal vein thrombosis due to acute severe appendicitis, managed with intensive intraperitoneal drainage via open abdominal management (OAM).
CASE PRESENTATION: A 19-year-old male with severe appendicitis, liver abscesses, and portal vein thrombosis developed septic shock and multi-organ failure. After emergency interventions, the patient was admitted to the intensive care unit. Antibiotic t
