Perceived social support and abdominal fat distribution in adolescents and young adults: a structural equation analysis of prospective data.

We prospectively examined the relationship between perceived social support and abdominal fat distribution. A 3-year follow-up study of 235 randomly selected healthy adolescents and young adults was used. Abdominal fat distribution was measured by means of the waist to hip circumference ratio (WHR), and social support was measured by the Perceived Social Support Scale-Revised. Data were analysed using structural equation models. Changes in social support were inversely associated with changes in WHR, adjusted for body-mass index, among boys and men. This association was less evident among girl

Cross-sectional association between relative fat mass and abdominal aortic calcification among US adults: The NHANES 2013 to 2014.

Abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) serves as a reliable predictor of future cardiovascular incidents. This study investigated the association between relative fat mass (RFM) and AAC in US adults. A total of 3079 adults aged ≥40 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013 to 2014 were included in the cross-sectional study. AAC was evaluated using a semi-quantitative scoring system known as AAC-24, with an AAC score >6 considered severe AAC (SAAC). Logistic regression analyses and restricted cubic splines were applied. Subgroup analyses were also conducted. After adjus

Pericardial fat, thoracic peri-aortic adipose tissue, and systemic inflammatory marker in nonalcoholic fatty liver and abdominal obesity phenotype.

Researchers have conducted many studies about the relationships between peri-cardiovascular fat, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), waist circumference, and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Nevertheless, the relationship between NAFLD and pericardial fat (PCF)/thoracic peri-aortic adipose tissue (TAT) phenotypes was still unknown. This study aimed to explore whether PCF/TAT was associated with NAFLD/abdominal obesity (AO) phenotypes in different high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels. We consecutively studied 1655 individuals (mean age, 49.44 ± 9.76 years) who underwent a heal

The relationship between regional abdominal fat distribution and both insulin resistance and subclinical chronic inflammation in non-diabetic adults.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity is associated with a high risk of insulin resistance (IR) and its metabolic complications. It is still debated that distributions of adipose tissue relate to an excess risk of IR and chronic inflammation in different race. This study was designed to examine the relation between insulin sensitivity, chronic inflammation and central fat distribution in non-diabetic volunteers in Taiwanese. METHODS: There were 328 volunteers without family history of diabetes mellitus and with normal oral glucose tolerance test enrolled. Total body fat and abdominal fat were measured. Abdomina

Abdominal visceral and subcutaneous fat increase, insulin resistance and hyperlipidemia in testicular cancer patients treated with cisplatin-based chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Testicular cancer survivors treated with chemotherapy are at increased risk for metabolic syndrome (MetS) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). We explored acute effects of chemotherapy by assessing metabolic factors, abdominal fat volume, hepatic triglyceride content (HTC) and aortic wall stiffness. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied 19 testicular cancer patients (age 20-54 years) before, at three and nine months after the start of chemotherapy. Blood serum was analyzed for lipids, glucose and insulin. Abdominal visceral and subcutaneous fat volume and aortic pulse wave velocity were a

Signals from intra-abdominal fat modulate insulin and leptin sensitivity through different mechanisms: neuronal involvement in food-intake regulation.

Intra-abdominal fat accumulation is involved in development of the metabolic syndrome, which is associated with insulin and leptin resistance. We show here that ectopic expression of very low levels of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) in epididymal fat (Epi) reverses both insulin and leptin resistance. UCP1 expression in Epi improved glucose tolerance and decreased food intake in both diet-induced and genetically obese mouse models. In contrast, UCP1 expression in Epi of leptin-receptor mutant mice did not alter food intake, though it significantly decreased blood glucose and insulin levels. Thus,

Multi-Tissue Metabolomics Reveals Metabolic Signatures Associated with Lipid Partitioning Between Abdominal Fat and Egg Yolk in Laying Hens.

Fat deposition in laying hens involves lipid synthesis, transport, storage, and allocation across multiple tissues, yet the metabolic links between abdominal fat (AF) and egg yolk (EY) lipid deposition remain unclear. Here, we integrated whole-genome resequencing data with untargeted metabolomic profiles from the liver, duodenum, ileum, cecum, and serum of 248 purebred Rhode Island Red hens at 100 weeks of age. We estimated metabolite-explained variance (me2) for 22 fat deposition-related traits, evaluated metabolite heritability, and combined Spearman correlation analysis with bidirectional g

Abdominal fat distribution measured by ultrasound and aerobic fitness in young Danish men born with low and normal birth weight.

Abdominal subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue thickness was examined by ultrasound in 17 men with low birth weight (LBW) and 26 with normal BW control individuals to determine if abdominal obesity in LBW individuals is due to increased visceral or subcutaneous fat mass/thickness, or both. Men born with LBW had an increased waist-to-hip ratio (P = 0.04), greater abdominal fat thickness (P = 0.05) and increased visceral (VAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) thickness compared with controls, however the latter not statistically significant (P = 0.08, P = 0.10). A significant difference

Mediastino-abdominal lipomatosis: deep accumulation of fat mimicking a respiratory disease and ascites. Clinical aspects and metabolic studies in vitro.

We report on clinical and metabolic studies of a newly delineated lipomatosis, characterised by an abnormal mediastinal and abdominal accumulation of fat, without obesity. The clinical features, which occurred in all the patients studied, are: Exertional dyspnoea due to a space-occupying mediastinal accumulation of fat, without evidence of cardiac or pulmonary disease. A pseudo-ascitic abdominal enlargement, due to intra- and retroperitoneal accumulation of fatty tissue. Insulin-independent diabetes mellitus. Type IV hyperlipidaemia and elevated levels of plasma uric acid were observed in four

Visceral to subcutaneous fat area ratio predicts severe abdominal adhesions in definitive surgery for anastomotic fistula after small intestine resection.

Abdominal adhesions manifests following abdominal infections triggered by intestinal fistulas. The severity of such adhesions depends on the extent of fiber deposition and peritoneal fibrinolysis following peritoneal injury, which may be influenced by sustained inflammation within the abdominal cavity. In this regard, the visceral-to-subcutaneous fat area (VFA/SFA) ratio has been implicated as a potential marker of inflammation. This study aimed to explore the relationship between VFA/SFA and abdominal adhesions. This multicenter study was conducted across four tertiary institutions and involv

Quantification of fat and skeletal muscle tissue at abdominal computed tomography: associations between single-slice measurements and total compartment volumes.

PURPOSE: Body composition is of great prognostic value in several severe diseases, including different types of cancer as well as cardiometabolic disorders. We aimed to investigate the correlations of skeletal muscle mass and abdominal adipose tissue compartments between volumetric and single-slice measurements to study the usefulness of several anatomical landmarks for estimation of total compartment volumes using abdominal CT-scans. METHODS: In this retrospective study volumetric quantifications of paraspinal skeletal muscles (SM) and adipose tissue compartments (visceral adipose tissue, VA

Changes in abdominal fat following antiretroviral therapy initiation in HIV-infected individuals correlate with waist circumference and self-reported changes.

BACKGROUND: We examined whether waist circumference (WC) and self-reported abdominal size changes can estimate visceral adipose tissue (VAT) changes for those initiating antiretroviral therapy (ART). METHODS: Prospectively collected data from ACTG A5257 and its metabolic substudy, A5260s, were used for this analysis. ART-naive HIV-infected participants were randomized to one of three contemporary ART regimens. Changes in abdominal CT-measured VAT and total adipose tissue (TAT) and DXA-measured trunk fat were tested for association with WC changes (by Pearson correlation) and categories of sel

Mildly compromised tetrahydrobiopterin cofactor biosynthesis due to Pts variants leads to unusual body fat distribution and abdominal obesity in mice.

Tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) is an essential cofactor for the aromatic amino acid hydroxylases, alkylglycerol monooxygenase, and nitric oxide synthases (NOS). Inborn errors of BH4 metabolism lead to severe insufficiency of brain monoamine neurotransmitters while augmentation of BH4 by supplementation or stimulation of its biosynthesis is thought to ameliorate endothelial NOS (eNOS) dysfunction, to protect from (cardio-) vascular disease and/or prevent obesity and development of the metabolic syndrome. We have previously reported that homozygous knock-out mice for the 6-pyruvolytetrahydropterin sy

Children with moderate-high infection with Entamoeba coli have higher percentage of body and abdominal fat than non-infected children.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasites, virus and bacterial infections are positively associated with obesity and adiposity in vitro and in animal models, but conclusive evidence of this relationship in humans is lacking. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine differences in adiposity between infected and non-infected children, with a high prevalence of intestinal parasitic infection and obesity. SUBJECTS: A total of 296 school-aged children (8.0 ± 1.5 years) from a rural area in Querétaro, Mexico, participated in this study. Anthropometry (weight, height and waist circumference) an
