EWSR1/FUS-CREB-rearranged mesenchymal neoplasms are an emerging heterogeneous group of soft tissue tumors that encompasses low-grade lesions (angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma/AFH) and a group of predominantly intra-abdominal aggressive sarcomas with epithelioid morphology and frequent keratin expression. Both entities occasionally harbor EWSR1::ATF1 fusions as alternate to the more frequent EWSR1/FUS::CREB1/CREM fusions. Although EWSR1/FUS-CREB-rearranged epithelioid malignant neoplasms have been described in diverse intra-abdominal sites, none involved the female adnexa. Herein, we describe t

BACKGROUND: Granular cell tumors (GCTs) are rare soft tissue neoplasms, with invasive forms being exceptionally uncommon in the abdominal wall. This case highlights the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges of managing an invasive GCT in an atypical location.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old male presented with a painless, enlarging mass in the left rectus abdominis, with no history of trauma or systemic symptoms. Imaging revealed an exophytic mass with ill-defined borders. Histopathological examination confirmed an invasive granular cell tumor. The patient underwent complete surgical resecti

Desmoid tumors are benign fibroblastic neoplasms with no metastatic potential, but a propensity for local recurrence even after complete surgical resection. These lesions can develop at any site in the body, and commonly occur in the intra-abdominal area. Intra-abdominal desmoid tumors usually occur at the mesentery or retroperitoneum, and may morphologically mimic gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). Distinguishing between these tumors is important, because the therapies differ substantially, but is often difficult even with the use of CD117 staining. We herein report the cases of two pat

OBJECTIVES: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACCA) is an uncommon primary malignancy of salivary glands and rarely nonsalivary tissue. This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of ACCA on fine needle aspiration (FNA) material and the associated challenges.
METHODS: A search on electronic pathology database from 2006 to 2016 at The Johns Hopkins Hospital found 83 cytology specimens diagnosed as ACCA, 49 with histology follow-up.
RESULTS: Fifty-two females and 31 males were found ranging from 37 to 95 years old (mean 62.5). The tumor size was 1 to 11.5 cm (mean 3.4). FNAs were performed on

Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumors (IMTs) are rare fibroblastic/myofibroblastic neoplasms that affect predominately pediatric patients and young adults. Almost half of the patients with IMTs have a chromosomal abnormality in the Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase 1 gene on chromosome 2p23. Although these tumors occur primarily in the lung, lesions have been reported in a variety of intra-abdominal organs like the liver, spleen, and mesentery. Small bowel IMTs are particularly rare. IMTs generally pursue a benign clinical course, however intra-abdominal and retroperitoneal tumors have typically shown

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) is a rare epithelial malignancy of the appendix. If it perforates the abdominal cavity, it can cause a serious clinical syndrome called pseudomyxoma peritonei. In the present case, we laparoscopically removed a LAMN encountered during risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO). The patient was a 53-year-old woman who was diagnosed with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome. RRSO was planned, and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a large cystic tumor in the right lower abdomen. We expected an ovarian cyst; however, it was a primary tumor

BACKGROUND: Mucinous cystadenocarcinoma is the second most common etiology of appendiceal mucocele. We report a relatively rare case of a giant appendiceal mucocele caused by mucinous cystadenocarcinoma, which occupied the entire abdomen of an adult woman.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 63-year-old woman presented with a chief complaint of abdominal distention. Imaging studies showed a giant cystic mass occupying her entire abdomen. Laparotomy confirmed a giant appendiceal mucocele, and the patient underwent ileocecal resection. A mucinous deposit was not found in her abdominal cavity, and the ovaries

Metanephric adenoma (MA) is a rare neoplasm that acounts for 0.2% of adult renal neoplasms. MAs are typically discover incidentally during detailed examinations for nonspecific symptoms such as abdominal or flank pain, hematuria, fever and palpable abdominal mass. Additionally, polycythemia has occasionally been reported as well. Herein we describe a case of metanephric adenoma which was an incidental finding in the course of a clinical autopsy in a patient with complete AV block and polycythemia. Histologically, the tumor was composed of small and uniform tubular structures reminiscent of ren

A 2-year-old gelding presented with a history of lethargy and anorexia. Physical examination revealed pleural and abdominal fluid, as well as several masses in the scrotum. The horse became acutely dyspneic despite 7 days of supportive care. Because of the poor prognosis, the owners elected euthanasia. Gross necropsy findings included multiple masses in the scrotum and inguinal canals and along the dorsal peritoneal cavity. The neoplasm infiltrated the kidneys, liver, spleen, mesenteric lymph nodes, mesentery, and abdominal surface of the diaphragm. Histologically, the neoplasm is composed of

BACKGROUND: Endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS) is an uncommon malign neoplasm, and its occurrence outside the uterus is extremely rare in the absence of metastasis or extension of a primary uterine neoplasm. When arising in the pelvis or abdominal cavity, ESS is associated with uterine adnexa or serosal surface of various organs.
CASE: We present the case of a 46-year-old woman with lower abdominal pain and regular menstruation who underwent laparotomy after a diagnosis of pelvic mass mimicking a right adnexial tumor. Exploration of the pelvis revealed a retroperitoneal mass of 15 cm in diamet

Intra-abdominal desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a recently described, rare neoplasm that usually occurs in male adolescents, has a poor prognosis, and displays a typical clinicopathological profile. This aggressive neoplasm exhibits a predominantly intra-abdominal serosal pattern, with frequent pelvic extension, less frequent retroperitoneal involvement, and rare pulmonary and mediastinal spread. We report on the autopsy findings of a 9-year-old male who presented with a biopsy-proven DSRCT involving the abdomen, retroperitoneum, and scrotum and additional radiologic studies sug

Appendiceal endometriosis with intestinal metaplasia is particularly challenging to diagnose preoperatively based on clinical features. Microscopically, it can mimic malignant transformation into mucinous neoplasms of the appendix. The present study reports a case of a 47-year-old woman who presented with abdominal pain that was not related to her menstruation. The preoperative diagnosis and laparoscopic evaluation were chronic appendicitis. No mucinous or haemorrhagic secretions were present within the abdominal cavity. Pathological evaluation revealed conventional endometriosis with intestin

Several types of mucinous lesions of the fallopian tube have been reported, including metaplastic and neoplastic lesions, most of which exhibit gastric phenotypes. Here, we report a unique case of a mucinous tumor arising in the right fallopian tube of a 36-year-old female who presented with refractory abdominal pain for approximately one year. Abdominal CT and MRI found a cystic lesion leading to the diagnosis of hematosalpinx, thus right salpingo-oophorectomy and appendectomy were performed. Macroscopic findings included cystic dilatation of the distal portion of the right fallopian tube, fi

Intussusception is a common condition of bowel obstruction in pediatric patients. However, 5% of all cases occur in adults, mostly aged over fifty, with no difference based on sex, representing about 1% of all causes of bowel obstruction. Compared to pediatric population, it is triggered by a pathologic lead point in about 85% of cases, represented in 60% of cases by malignant and benign neoplasms. Among these neoplasms, an inflammatory fibroid polyp (IFP), a benign neoplastic submucosal lesion also known as Vanek's tumor, is considered a very uncommon cause of adult intussusception. Clinical

Stromal tumors (GIST) represent 5% of gastric neoplasms. Twenty-five patients with GIST underwent surgical operation: the tumor was benign, malignant, and borderline in 11, 12, and 2 cases, respectively. Main symptoms were abdominal pain (36%), and digestive haemorrhage (32%); 4 patients (16%) complained of abdominal mass. In 5 patients the diagnosis was incidental. Surgical operations (12 local resections, 9 partial gastric resections, and 4 total gastrectomies) were macroscopically curative in all the patients. In 3 patients the resection was extended to liver (1 case), spleen, pancreatic bo

Uterine leiomyomas represent the most common benign tumors of the female reproductive tract. Giant uterine leiomyomas are very rare neoplasms and represents a great diagnosis and therapeutic challenge. This article illustrates a case of a 45-year old woman presented to our surgery department with a 10-month history of progressive increasing abdominal size, back pain, vague abdominal pressure sensations, weight loss, constipation and urinary frequency. Physical examination, laboratory evaluation, transabdominal ultrasound and computed tomography scanning suggested a giant abdominopelvic mass. A

Eventration is one of the rare but the most dangerous postoperative complications in the abdominal surgery registered in 0.5-2.35% of patients. Eventration occurs most frequently after urgent surgery on the abdominal organs of weakened patients of the old and elderly ages with a low immune-biological condition of the body. Examination of certain specific features of eventration occurrence with underlying oncological process will allow better understanding the latter in the development of the postoperative complication. Therefore, the objective of the research was to examine experimentally the

BACKGROUND: Mature cystic teratoma of the ovary is classified among the benign ovarian germ cell neoplasms, and its malignant transformation occurs very rarely (in about 2%). As a result of nonspecific signs and symptoms, preoperative diagnosis of theses malignancies is a challenge to clinicians, resulting in delayed diagnosis (in advanced stages) and poor outcomes.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 43-year-old Iranian woman with progressive distension of the abdomen and hypogastric pain, who was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma transformation in a mature cystic teratoma of the

BACKGROUND: Solid pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN) of the pancreas is a rare epithelial tumor that primarily affects young women. Since the condition is often asymptomatic or presents with non-specific symptoms, its diagnosis can be difficult.
CASE SUMMARY: This report details the case of a 15-year-old girl who presented with a 2-year history of abdominal pain, with no significant findings during physical examination. Abdominal ultrasound revealed a well-defined heterogeneous solid-cystic mass in the epigastric region, likely originating from the tail of the pancreas. A subsequent contrast-enha
