Impact of Paediatric-Onset Inflammatory Bowel Disease on Educational Paths and Careers.

INTRODUCTION: Given the paucity of data, we aimed to determine the impact of paediatric-onset inflammatory bowel disease on educational paths and careers. METHODS: Data from the national prospective Swiss Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Cohort Study from May 2006 to October 2019 were analysed. Patients were stratified into the following groups according to their age at diagnosis: paediatric (0-17 years), early adult (age 18-30 years), and late adult (age 30-65 years). The three groups were compared regarding educational level, unemployment, absenteeism from work, and disability pension. RES

Adopting Clean Fuels and Technologies on School Buses. Pollution and Health Impacts in Children.

RATIONALE: More than 25 million American children breathe polluted air on diesel school buses. Emission reduction policies exist, but the health impacts to individual children have not been evaluated. METHODS: Using a natural experiment, we characterized the exposures and health of 275 school bus riders before, during, and after the adoption of clean technologies and fuels between 2005 and 2009. Air pollution was measured during 597 trips on 188 school buses. Repeated measures of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), lung function (FEV1, FVC), and absenteeism were also collected monthly (1,768 visits)

Diagnosis-specific Cumulative Incidence of Return-to-work, Resignation, and Death Among Long-term Sick-listed Employees: Findings From the Japan Epidemiology Collaboration on Occupational Health Study.

BACKGROUND: While it is essential to understand how long is sufficient for return-to-work when designing paid sick-leave systems, little attempt has been done to collect cause-specific information on when and how many of sickness absentees returned to work, became unemployed, or passed away. METHODS: We studied the first sick-leave episode of ≥30 consecutive days in those ≤55 years of age during 2012-2013 among employees of 11 Japanese private companies (n = 1,209), which were followed until 2017. Overall and disease-specific cumulative incidences of return-to-work, resignations, and deaths w

The impact of migraine and probable migraine on productivity loss in Korea: A cross-sectional online survey.

Migraine is an enormous burden on society, but relevant studies are limited. The population of interest of this study was migraine or probable migraine (PM) in Korea. In this population, we aimed to assess the productivity loss through the level of severity defined by monthly migraine days (MMD) and analgesic frequency and to estimate costs and associated factors of productivity loss. We conducted an online survey of adults with migraine symptoms. We defined migraine and PM using the modified International Classification of Headache Disorders, second edition. Severity level was defined by subg

Children's early school attendance and stability as a mechanism through which homelessness is associated with academic achievement.

Unfortunately, family homelessness is a crisis in the United States. The majority of families experiencing homelessness are headed by single mothers and half of children who experience homelessness are less than five years of age. In the current study, we investigated whether children's school attendance and stability mediated the association between early experiences of homelessness (in infancy and toddlerhood) with children's school performance on standardized assessments of math and English language arts administered in the spring of third grade in a sample of children of young mothers. We

Development and evaluation of a participatory ergonomic intervention for the reduction of work-related musculoskeletal disorders among nurses.

Nurses are highly vulnerable to work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD). This study evaluated the effects of a participatory ergonomic intervention on WMSD, sick absenteeism, and work performance among ward nurses. A multicomponent ergonomic training module, comprising educational ergonomics, health promotional activities, workstation adjustment, use of patient-assisted devices, and progressive muscle relaxation techniques, was developed based on a systematic review, focus group discussion, and discussion with ergonomic experts. A cluster quasi-experimental design was conducted, with nur

Soil-transmitted helminthiasis: a critical but neglected factor influencing school participation of Aboriginal children in rural Malaysia.

Soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH), among the most common neglected tropical diseases, is a major public health problem in Malaysia with a possible impact on the nutritional status and school participation of rural children. This study was carried out among Aboriginal schoolchildren, living in an endemic area for STH in Malaysia, to determine the possible relationship between intestinal helminthiasis and school absenteeism. We also evaluated whether successful treatment of the infection will affect school attendance among the subjects. Stool analysis revealed that more than 90% of the subjec

Ocular findings seen among the staff of an institution in Lagos, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: The degree to which ocular morbidity affects workers productivity in the developing countries has not been studied adequately. A federal government research institute based in Lagos introduced an annual health screen for all its workers, which included eye tests. This provided an opportunity to study the pattern of ocular conditions among workers who were 30 years and above, and to determine the effect of eye diseases on the workers productivity. STUDY DESIGN: Detailed eye examination including refraction, was done on every respondent at the institution's clinic by an ophthalmolog

Effect of intestinal helminthiasis on school attendance by early primary schoolchildren.

Stool examination of 249 early primary schoolchildren at 2 schools in north-eastern peninsular Malaysia revealed that 73 were infected with Ascaris lumbricoides, 103 with Trichuris trichiura, and 18 with hookworms. Infected children were treated with a single dose of 400 mg of albendazole. The school attendance records during a 60 d period before treatment and 2 consecutive 60 d periods after treatment were examined. The absenteeism rate did not improve more among infected children after treatment than it did among the uninfected control children. The correlation between worm intensity and the

Work group culture, stress, and hostility. Correlations with organizational outcomes.

Understanding your organizational culture is necessary if you are to be successful in making and surviving the necessary changes in current environments. Although organizational culture frequently has been studied in the business community, there are fewer studies of organizational or work group culture in hospital settings at the nursing unit level. The existing studies have emphasized the need to understand the individual work group culture before successfully implementing innovation and educational programs, or hiring and orienting new employees on nursing units. This descriptive, correlati
