"Gender differences in psychophysiological responses to stress and academic performance: The role of sleep, anxiety, and Heart Rate Variability".

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of stress among university students has become a significant public health concern, with gender differences in psychophysiological responses remaining understudied. This study examined how gender influences stress-related factors and their association with academic performance. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 601 Colombian university students (74.7 % women, aged 15-47). Participants completed online questionnaires assessing sleep habits, personality traits (Big Five Inventory), anxiety (STAI), psychological inflexibility (AAQ-II), solitude (UCLA),

From unequal injuries to unequal learning? Socioeconomic gradients in childhood concussions and the impact on children's academic performance.

Previous research identifies stark socioeconomic disparities in child injuries, yet research on the repercussions hereof on other aspects of children's lives remains sparse. This paper tests whether social gradients in minor traumatic brain injuries (mTBIs or concussions) contribute to corresponding inequalities in children's academic performance. Previous research on this topic is mostly based on small samples and confounded by non-random selection into experiencing mTBIs. We improve on prior research by using high quality, large N, administrative registry data. Further, we control for select

A meta-analysis of the validity of the Head-Toes-Knees-Shoulders task in predicting young children's academic performance.

The present study represents the first meta-analytic synthesis of the utility of a widely used early-childhood self-regulation measure, the Head-Toes-Knees-Shoulders task, in predicting children's academic achievement. A systematic review of the literature yielded 69 studies accessed from peer reviewed journals representing 413 effect sizes and 19,917 children meeting the complete set of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Robust variance analysis demonstrated that the Head-Toes-Knees-Shoulders task was a consistent predictor of children's academic achievement across literacy, oral language, and

Sleep disruption in medicine students and its relationship with impaired academic performance: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Sleep disruption severely impairs learning ability, affecting academic performance in students. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed at assessing the prevalence of sleep disruption in medical students and its relationship with academic performance. PubMed, Web of Sciences, EBSCO and SciELO databases searches allowed to retrieve 41 papers with data about the prevalence of sleep deprivation, 20 of which also contained data on its association with academic performance. Poor sleep quality was reported by 5646 out of 14,170 students in 29 studies (39.8%, 95% confidence interval = 39.0-40.

Effectiveness of Information Processing Strategy Training on Academic Task Performance in Children with Learning Disabilities: A Pilot Study.

Learning disabilities (LD) can be associated with problems in the four stages of information processing used in learning: input, throughput, output, and feedback. These problems affect the child's ability to learn and perform activities in daily life, especially during academic activities. This study is a pilot study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of information processing strategy training using a combination of two approaches that address the ability to apply processing strategies during academic activities in children with LD. The two approaches are the Perceive, Recall, Plan, and

Influence of Disruptive Behavior Disorders on Academic Performance and School Functions of Youths with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Childhood attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and comorbid oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder (ODD/CD) are associated with negative school outcomes. The study aimed to examine the impact of ADHD and ODD/CD on various school functions. 395 youths with ADHD (244 with ADHD + ODD/CD and 151 with ADHD only) and 156 controls received semi-structured psychiatric interviews. School functions were assessed and compared between each group with a multiple-level model. The results showed that youths with ADHD had poorer performance across different domains of school functioning. Yo

Precarity and academic performances in undergraduate students: the serial mediating roles of insomnia symptoms and psychotic-like experiences.

BACKGROUND: Socioeconomic precarity is a well-established determinant of academic difficulties in higher education, yet the mechanisms underlying this association remain insufficiently understood. Sleep disturbances and mental health vulnerabilities may represent key intermediate processes. The present study examined a serial mediation model linking precarity to academic performance through insomnia and psychotic-like experiences in undergraduate students. METHODS: A total of 346 students completed self-report measures of precarity, insomnia symptoms, and psychotic-like experiences. Academic

Physical, mental and behavioral health indicators in relation to academic performance in European boys and girls: the I.Family study.

BACKGROUND: Academic performance in children is associated with a range of health-related factors, including physical fitness, mental well-being, sleep, and behavioral patterns. While previous studies have examined these factors individually, fewer have assessed their independent associations with academic achievement while accounting for other relevant health indicators. This study uses data from the I.Family study to explore how physical, mental, sleep-related, and behavioral health indicators relate to academic achievement among European adolescents, considering each factor's contribution w

Effects of a Single Concussion During the School Year on the Academic Performance and Neuropsychological Functioning of High School Athletes.

There are very few studies examining the effects of sports-related concussion (SRC) on objective measures of school performance, such as grades or test scores. In this research, the grade point averages (GPAs) and scores of the Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT) of athletes who sustained an SRC during the school year were compared with those of athletes who did not have an SRC. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) revealed a significant linear decline in GPA of both groups across the school year, but indicated no difference in the GPA decline between the

Distress and academic achievement among adolescents of affluence: a study of externalizing and internalizing problem behaviors and school performance.

The main objectives of this study were to prospectively examine the relationship between externalizing (substance use and delinquency) and internalizing (depression and anxiety) dimensions and academic achievement (grades and classroom adjustment), as well as continuity over time in these domains, within a sample of wealthy adolescents followed from 10th to 12th grades (n = 256). In both parts of the study, cluster analyses were used to group participants at 10th grade and then group differences were evaluated on adjustment outcomes over time.
