Association of Weight Gain Acceleration With Risk of Retinopathy of Prematurity.

IMPORTANCE: Early slow postnatal weight gain, a surrogate for low insulinlike growth factor 1 (IGF-1) levels, is predictive of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). While low IGF-1 levels inhibit retinal vessel growth, a later rise theoretically activates vascular endothelial growth factor, causing neovascularization. Rate of rise of IGF-1 level is represented by weight gain acceleration (WGA) and may be used to evaluate risk of ROP. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether faster WGA during a later postnatal period is associated with a higher, rather than lower, risk of severe ROP. DESIGN, SETTING, AND P

Dissociation of muscle and cortical response scaling to balance perturbation acceleration.

The role of cortical activity in standing balance is unclear. Here we tested whether perturbation-evoked cortical responses share sensory input with simultaneous balance-correcting muscle responses. We hypothesized that the acceleration-dependent somatosensory signals that drive the initial burst of the muscle automatic postural response also drive the simultaneous perturbation-evoked cortical N1 response. We measured in healthy young adults ( n = 16) the initial burst of the muscle automatic postural response (100-200 ms), startle-related muscle responses (100-200 ms), and the perturbation-ev

Acceleration of BMI in Early Childhood and Risk of Sustained Obesity.

BACKGROUND: The dynamics of body-mass index (BMI) in children from birth to adolescence are unclear, and whether susceptibility for the development of sustained obesity occurs at a specific age in children is important to determine. METHODS: To assess the age at onset of obesity, we performed prospective and retrospective analyses of the course of BMI over time in a population-based sample of 51,505 children for whom sequential anthropometric data were available during childhood (0 to 14 years of age) and adolescence (15 to 18 years of age). In addition, we assessed the dynamics of annual BMI

Acceleration training for managing nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: While aerobic training is generally recommended as therapeutic exercise in guidelines, the effectiveness of resistance training has recently been reported in the management of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Acceleration training (AT) is a new training method that provides a physical stimulation effect on skeletal muscles by increasing gravitational acceleration with vibration. AT has recently been indicated as a component of medicine. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of AT in the management of NAFLD in obese subjects. METHODS: A total of 18 obese patients w

A new PMHS model for lumbar spine injuries during vertical acceleration.

Ejection from military aircraft exerts substantial loads on the lumbar spine. Fractures remain common, although the overall survivability of the event has considerably increased over recent decades. The present study was performed to develop and validate a biomechanically accurate experimental model for the high vertical acceleration loading to the lumbar spine that occurs during the catapult phase of aircraft ejection. The model consisted of a vertical drop tower with two horizontal platforms attached to a monorail using low friction linear bearings. A total of four human cadaveric spine spec

Hormonal acceleration of song development illuminates motor control mechanism in canaries.

In songbirds, the ontogeny of singing behavior shows strong parallels with human speech learning. As in humans, development of learned vocal behavior requires exposure to an acoustic model of species-typical vocalizations, and, subsequently, a sensorimotor practice period after which the vocalization is produced in a stereotyped manner. This requires mastering motor instructions driving the vocal organ and the respiratory system. Recently, it was shown that, in the case of canaries (Serinus canaria), the diverse syllables, constituting the song, are generated with air sac pressure patterns wit

Facioaudiosymphalangism syndrome and growth acceleration associated with a heterozygous NOG mutation.

We report on a father and son with facioaudiosymphalangism syndrome, an alternative designation for multiple synostoses syndrome, type I. This syndrome includes synostosis, brachydactyly, craniofacial dysmorphic features, stapes fixation, hyperopia, and growth retardation. In contrast to the typical presentation, the height of the 10-year-old son was above the 97th centile from the age of 3.5 years and he had markers of an activated bone metabolism. The father and son had a novel heterozygous missense mutation c.696C > G, p.Cys232Trp, in the NOG gene. While not yet described in human NOG-relat

Traumatic rupture of the intracranial vertebral artery due to rotational acceleration.

The reason for blunt forces against the head to rupture the basal brain arteries has been discussed in forensic and trauma research. However, well-documented case reports demonstrating the mechanism of injury, the clinical course and the forensic work up are rare. We present the case of a 40-year-old man, who was assaulted with blunt force to the head resulting in death 34 h later from a longitudinal rupture of the distal left vertebral artery. Computer tomography of the brain and the face demonstrated a basal subarachnoidal haemorrhage, signs of increased intracranial pressure and a fracture

Mortality rate acceleration and post-reproductive lifespan in matrilineal whale species.

The strength of selection to increase the span of a life stage is dependent upon individuals at that stage being able to contribute towards individual fitness and the probability of their surviving to that stage. Complete reproductive cessation and a long post-reproductive female lifespan as found in humans are also found in killer whale (Orcinus orca) and short-finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus), but not in the long-finned pilot whale (Globicephala melaena). Each species forms kin-based, stable matrilineal groups and exhibits kin-directed behaviours that could increase inclusive

Acceleration of amyloid beta-peptide aggregation by physiological concentrations of calcium.

Alzheimer disease is characterized by the accumulation of aggregated amyloid beta-peptide (Abeta) in the brain. The physiological mechanisms and factors that predispose to Abeta aggregation and deposition are not well understood. In this report, we show that calcium can predispose to Abeta aggregation and fibril formation. Calcium increased the aggregation of early forming protofibrillar structures and markedly increased conversion of protofibrils to mature amyloid fibrils. This occurred at levels 20-fold below the calcium concentration in the extracellular space of the brain, the site at whic

Recovery of the high-acceleration vestibulo-ocular reflex after vestibular neuritis.

Vestibular neuritis (VN) usually leads to a sudden gain asymmetry of the high-acceleration horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR). We asked whether this asymmetry decreases over time indicating peripheral recovery and/or central compensation. The horizontal VOR during rapid rotational head impulses to both sides was recorded with search coils in 37 patients at different time periods (1-240 weeks) after the onset of VN. In ten patients, sequential measurements were performed. Gains of the VOR during head impulses toward the ipsilesional side significantly increased after the initial drop (ave

Acceleration of Integra incorporation in complex tissue defects with subatmospheric pressure.

In an effort to accelerate vascularization and simplify the care of Integra (Ethicon, Inc., Somerville, N.J.), topical subatmospheric pressure was used for eight patients (age range, 2 to 60 years) with complex wounds. Bone was exposed in 62.5 percent of cases, joint in 50 percent, tendon in 37.5 percent, and bowel in 25 percent. The estimated Integra take rate was 96 percent. Split-thickness skin grafting was performed at 4 to 11 days (mean, 7.25 days), with a 93 percent take rate. No adverse side effects were observed with this technique. Application of subatmospheric pressure improved the t

Ultrasound treatment acceleration of solvent extraction for fumigant residues from wheat.

Concerns about consumer and worker safety and the fate of fumigants have fuelled strong efforts to determine their residues in foodstuffs. Fumigants are usually extracted from commodities with solvent at room temperature (25 degrees C). In this paper, solvent extraction of methyl bromide, phosphine, carbonyl sulfide, and carbon disulfide using ultrasonic acceleration or heating was evaluated. Wheat samples plus solvent, in gas-tight bottles, were placed in an ultrasonic chamber or an oven (50 degrees C), and fumigants were released into the headspace over the solvent. Completeness of extractio

Differences between syncope resulting from rapid onset acceleration and orthostatic stress.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Orthostatically-induced syncope is accompanied by venous pooling and vasodilatation. Loss of consciousness during head-to-foot acceleration (G-LOC) in aviators may be caused by a different mechanism, as venous pooling should be prevented through the use of an anti-G suit. This research was conducted to test the hypothesis that in individuals wearing a well-fitted anti-G garment, no important changes occur in the volume of dependent regions during loss of consciousness resulting from rapid onset acceleration stress. Further, this work compares venous pooling patterns

[Sinusoidal harmonic acceleration test in normal Chinese and 400 dizzy patients].

Forty healthy youth, 20 aged Chinese volunteers and 400 dizzy patients were tested with SHAT at frequencies of 0.01-0.64Hz. The peak velocity was 50 degrees/s. The commonly used three parameters: phase, gain, asymmetry were calculated by computer. Alertness tests in the darkness demonstrated a gain increase and a decrease of phase lead with increasing frequency. The bilateral responses were symmetrical in normal volunteers. The asymmetry value was in the limit of 5 degrees. The values of all the parameters made no sexual difference. The phase value with 0.01Hz in the aged volunteers was a litt

Selective vulnerability of hippocampal neurons in acceleration-induced experimental head injury.

Traumatically induced subtotal hippocampal neuronal loss traditionally has been considered a consequence of intracranial hypertension and impaired cerebral perfusion. We have examined the frequency and distribution of hippocampal lesions in an acceleration model of brain injury in 54 anesthetized nonhuman primates undergoing physiologic monitoring and subjected postinjury to comprehensive neuropathologic examination. Hippocampal lesions occurred in 32/54 animals (59%). These lesions always involved the CA-1 hippocampal subfield and were bilateral in 24 animals. Hippocampal involvement was not

Perinatal outcome in the absence of antepartum fetal heart rate acceleration.

The perinatal outcome of 27 pregnancies in which antepartum fetal activity testing revealed fetal heart rate acceleration to be either absent or less than 10 beats per minute for 80 minutes is presented. At delivery, each pregnancy was found to have one or more features consistent with uteroplacental insufficiency. These included fetal growth retardation (74%), oligohydramnios (81%), fetal acidosis (41%), meconium (30%), and placental infarction (93%). There were four fetal and seven neonatal deaths, for a perinatal mortality of 41%. Despite delivery of all live-born infants by cesarean sectio

Senile cataracts: evidence for acceleration by diabetes and deceleration by salicylate.

A method is described for determining the natural progression of senile cataracts in humans and whether certain factors accelerate or decelerate this progression. The method consists in plotting the age of the patient against the degree of opacity of the cataract to find the regression relation. A comparison of cataracts from diabetic and nondiabetic patients revealed that diabetes accelerated senile cataract formation, so that there was a difference of 9.6 years in the age of the two groups with more dense cataracts. Plasma tryptophan levels, which are increased in cataract patients, are lowe
