Accounting for symptom heterogeneity can improve neuroimaging models of antidepressant response after electroconvulsive therapy.

Depression symptom heterogeneity limits the identifiability of treatment-response biomarkers. Whether improvement along dimensions of depressive symptoms relates to separable neural networks remains poorly understood. We build on work describing three latent symptom dimensions within the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) and use data-driven methods to relate multivariate patterns of patient clinical, demographic, and brain structural changes over electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) to dimensional changes in depressive symptoms. We included 110 ECT patients from Global ECT-MRI Researc

Accounting for farmers' control decisions in a model of pathogen spread through animal trade.

Accounting for individual decisions in mechanistic epidemiological models remains a challenge, especially for unregulated endemic animal diseases for which control is not compulsory. We propose a new integrative model by combining two sub-models. The first one for the dynamics of a livestock epidemic on a metapopulation network, grounded on demographic and animal trade data. The second one for farmers' behavior regarding the adoption of a control measure against the disease spread in their herd. The measure is specified as a protective vaccine with given economic implications, and the model is

Long-term fiscal implications of funding assisted reproduction: a generational accounting model for Spain.

The aim of this study was to assess the lifetime economic benefits of assisted reproduction in Spain by calculating the return on this investment. We developed a generational accounting model that simulates the flow of taxes paid by the individual, minus direct government transfers received over the individual's lifetime. The difference between discounted transfers and taxes minus the cost of either IVF or artificial insemination (AI) equals the net fiscal contribution (NFC) of a child conceived through assisted reproduction. We conducted sensitivity analysis to test the robustness of our resu

Accounting for the associations between child maltreatment and internalizing problems: The role of alexithymia.

Internalizing difficulties are one of the most widely documented consequences of child maltreatment. However, there is a need for studies delineating the factors that account for this association. Despite research showing that alexithymia is associated with both child maltreatment and internalizing problems, the role of alexithymia in the link between child maltreatment and internalizing problems has not received much attention in the literature. The current study evaluated whether a history of child maltreatment was associated with symptoms of depression, anxiety, and loneliness in emerging a

Clinical Significance of Accounting for Tissue Heterogeneity in Permanent Breast Seed Implant Brachytherapy Planning.

PURPOSE: The inhomogeneity correction factor (ICF) method provides heterogeneity correction for the fast calculation TG43 formalism in seed brachytherapy. This study compared ICF-corrected plans to their standard TG43 counterparts, looking at their capacity to assess inadequate coverage and/or risk of any skin toxicities for patients who received permanent breast seed implant (PBSI). METHODS AND MATERIALS: Two-month postimplant computed tomography scans and plans of 140 PBSI patients were used to calculate dose distributions by using the TG43 and the ICF methods. Modeling Lung Carcinogenesis in Radon-Exposed Miner Cohorts: Accounting for Missing Information on Smoking.

Epidemiological miner cohort data used to estimate lung cancer risks related to occupational radon exposure often lack cohort-wide information on exposure to tobacco smoke, a potential confounder and important effect modifier. We have developed a method to project data on smoking habits from a case-control study onto an entire cohort by means of a Monte Carlo resampling technique. As a proof of principle, this method is tested on a subcohort of 35,084 former uranium miners employed at the WISMUT company (Germany), with 461 lung cancer deaths in the follow-up period 1955-1998. After applying th

Network meta-analysis of multiple outcome measures accounting for borrowing of information across outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Network meta-analysis (NMA) enables simultaneous comparison of multiple treatments while preserving randomisation. When summarising evidence to inform an economic evaluation, it is important that the analysis accurately reflects the dependency structure within the data, as correlations between outcomes may have implication for estimating the net benefit associated with treatment. A multivariate NMA offers a framework for evaluating multiple treatments across multiple outcome measures while accounting for the correlation structure between outcomes. METHODS: The standard NMA model i

Accounting for baseline differences and measurement error in the analysis of change over time.

If change over time is compared in several groups, it is important to take into account baseline values so that the comparison is carried out under the same preconditions. As the observed baseline measurements are distorted by measurement error, it may not be sufficient to include them as covariate. By fitting a longitudinal mixed-effects model to all data including the baseline observations and subsequently calculating the expected change conditional on the underlying baseline value, a solution to this problem has been provided recently so that groups with the same baseline characteristics ca

Accounting for variation in length of NICU stay for extremely low birth weight infants.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a length of stay (LOS) model for extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants. STUDY DESIGN: We included infants from the California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative with birth weight 401 to 1000 g who were discharged to home. Exclusion criteria were congenital anomalies, surgery and death. LOS was defined as days from admission to discharge. As patients who died or were transferred to lower level of care were excluded, we assessed correlation of hospital mortality rates and transfers to risk-adjusted LOS. RESULTS: There were 2012 infants with median LOS 79 days (range

Accounting for exhaust gas transport dynamics in instantaneous emission models via smooth transition regression.

Collecting and analyzing high frequency emission measurements has become very usual during the past decade as significantly more information with respect to formation conditions can be collected than from regulated bag measurements. A challenging issue for researchers is the accurate time-alignment between tailpipe measurements and engine operating variables. An alignment procedure should take into account both the reaction time of the analyzers and the dynamics of gas transport in the exhaust and measurement systems. This paper discusses a statistical modeling framework that compensates for v

The anxiety disorders and suicidal ideation: accounting for co-morbidity via underlying personality traits.

BACKGROUND: The anxiety disorders are robust correlates/predictors of suicidal ideation, but it is unclear whether (a) the anxiety disorders are specifically associated with suicidal ideation or (b) the association is due to co-morbidity with depression and other disorders. One means of modeling co-morbidity is through the personality traits neuroticism/negative emotionality (N/NE) and extraversion/positive emotionality (E/PE), which account for substantial shared variance among the internalizing disorders. The current study examines the association between the internalizing disorders and suic

Accounting for multiple births in neonatal and perinatal trials: systematic review and case study.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence in the neonatal literature of statistical approaches accounting for the unique clustering patterns of multiple births and to explore the sensitivity of an actual trial to several analytic approaches to multiples. STUDY DESIGN: A systematic review of recent perinatal trials assessed the prevalence of studies accounting for clustering of multiples. The Nitric Oxide to Prevent Chronic Lung Disease (NO CLD) trial served as a case study of the sensitivity of the outcome to several statistical strategies. We calculated odds ratios using nonclustered (logistic

Accounting for the Unaccounted in AI and Care: Bringing Young Carers into the AI Realm.

This position paper introduces young carers as a key stakeholder within AI. Research on AI for health care endeavors to assist and optimize current health care services; yet, young carers have been neglected thus far. Accordingly, this paper situates itself at the intersection of young people under the age of 18 years old providing care (referred to as young carers) and AI research. Through a socio-legal and public health lens, this paper (1) situates young carers to showcase (2) why they must be accounted for in AI systems, and (3) how AI researchers can do so. This lens highlights the diffic

Thalamocortical connectivity associated with fatigue after accounting for depressive symptoms in stroke survivors and controls.

BACKGROUND: Post-stroke fatigue is common and disabling, yet rarely distinguished from co-occurring depression, limiting understanding of its neural substrates. We examined resting-state fMRI correlates of post-stroke fatigue while accounting for depressive symptoms. METHODS: We studied 103 stroke patients and 29 age-matched controls from a longitudinal neuroimaging cohort. Fatigue was assessed via the SF-36 Vitality subscale and depression via the Geriatric Depression Scale - Short (GDS-15). Linear mixed-effects models evaluated associations between vitality and resting-state functional conn

[Inductance calculation method for transcranial magnetic stimulation figure-8 coils Accounting for spatial mutual inductance].

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is widely used in the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders, and the stimulation coil constitutes a critical component of TMS devices. Existing inductance calculations for figure-8 coils suffer from three notable shortcomings: they are mostly limited to single-layer geometries, they still rely on elliptic integrals, and they systematically overlook spatial mutual coupling among windings. To address these issues, we propose a high-precision analytical method that accommodates both flat spiral and multi-layer stacked coil configurations. Instead of adopt

Accuracy in parameter estimation and simulation approaches for sample-size planning accounting for item effects.

The planning of sample size for research studies often focuses on obtaining a significant result given a specified level of power, significance, and an anticipated effect size. This planning requires prior knowledge of the study design and a statistical analysis to calculate the proposed sample size. However, there may not be one specific testable analysis from which to derive power (Silberzahn et al., Advances in Methods and Practices in Psychological Science, 1(3), 337356, 2018) or a hypothesis to test for the project (e.g., creation of a stimuli database). Modern power and sample size plann

Depression and cognitive performance in post-9/11 veterans accounting for trauma-related clinical burden.

BACKGROUND: Post-9/11 Veterans experience a disproportionate burden of mental health conditions. Major depressive disorder (MDD) frequently co-occurs with trauma-related conditions, contributing to clinical heterogeneity. Clarifying how categorical and dimensional representations of depression relate to cognition while accounting for clinical comorbidity may improve understanding of depression and inform targeted interventions in Veterans. OBJECTIVE: To assess how categorical and dimensional measures of depression relate to cognitive performance and clinical characteristics in post-9/11 Veter

Accounting for species traits and exposure complexity to understand organism responses to microplastics and multistressors.

Our understanding of the abundance and hazard of microplastics has rapidly grown in recent years, however experimental studies and subsequent risk assessments largely fail to account for the complexity of microplastics, their interactions with the wider environment, and different species' exposures and responses. Microplastic complexity could lead them to be considered as multistressors in their own right. Uncertainties remain with respect to a) how particle characteristics can alter the hazard they pose (especially polymer type and aging), b) microplastic interactions with the vast array of w

Regional changes in cerebral perfusion with age when accounting for changes in gray-matter volume.

PURPOSE: One possible contributing factor for cerebral blood flow (CBF) decline in normal aging is the increase in partial volume effects due to brain atrophy, as cortical thinning can exacerbate the contamination of gray-matter (GM) voxels by other tissue types. This work investigates CBF changes in normal aging of a large elderly cohort aged 54 to 84 and how correction for partial volume effects that would accommodate potential changes in GM might affect this. METHODS: The study cohort consisted of 474 participants aged 54 to 84 years using pseudo-continuous arterial spin labeling MRI. A vo

Accounting for Fast vs Slow Exchange in Single Molecule FRET Experiments Reveals Hidden Conformational States.

Proteins are dynamic systems whose structural preferences determine their function. Unfortunately, building atomically detailed models of protein structural ensembles remains challenging, limiting our understanding of the relationships between sequence, structure, and function. Combining single molecule Förster resonance energy transfer (smFRET) experiments with molecular dynamics simulations could provide experimentally grounded, all-atom models of a protein's structural ensemble. However, agreement between the two techniques is often insufficient to achieve this goal. Here, we explore whethe
