The Mismeasure of Learning Disability: The Contentious Career of the "IQ-Achievement" Discrepancy.

The existence of a "severe discrepancy" between measured ability and achievement has been the dominant criterion for identifying learning disabilities ("LD") in American education since its codification into federal law in 1977. In this article, I argue that the history of LD is best understood not through the emergence of a diagnostic label, but through the evolution of its methods of identification. By tracing the rise and decline of the IQ-achievement discrepancy model amid shifting legal, psychometric, and policy contexts, I aim to show how declining faith in IQ tests as measures of potent

Obstetric Unit Closure Effects on Child Academic Achievement, Infant Health, and Maternal Care.

OBJECTIVE: To examine effects of obstetric unit closures on children's academic achievement, infant health, and maternal care outcomes. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study employs 1994-2009 birth certificate data from Iowa linked to school test scores for grades 2-11 through 2017-2018. Regressions based on two-way fixed effects (TWFE) and Callaway and Sant'Anna (C&S) difference-in-differences models estimate the effects of maternal residence in counties that had obstetric unit closures within 5 years before birth year. Outcomes are national percentile rankings (NPRs) on math and reading,

Concurrent predictors of mathematics achievement for 9-year-old children with Williams syndrome.

Research on mathematics achievement by children with Williams syndrome (WS) has been very limited. We describe the math achievement of 72 9-year-olds with WS, compare their math and reading achievement, and explore concurrent predictors of math achievement using the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test-III (WIAT-III) to measure achievement and the Differential Ability Scales-II (DAS-II) to measure cognitive abilities. For both Numerical Operations and Math Problem Solving, mean standard scores (SSs) were in the mild disability range with a full range from severe disability to average ability.

Does it add up? Educational achievement mediates child maltreatment subtypes to allostatic load.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment (CM) has been linked to higher levels of allostatic load (AL) and educational achievement is a possible pathway and may differ across gender. It is also critical to determine if CM severity or specific subtypes of CM are more or less influential. OBJECTIVE: This study examined educational achievement as a mediator linking cumulative and individual types of CM to AL and examined gender as a moderator. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Using two waves of data, 897 adults from the study Midlife in the United States were analyzed. METHODS: Multiple group structural eq

Age of early milestones achievement and developmental outcome in children with Down syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: In children with Down syndrome (DS), delay in the achievement of developmental milestones is well known, but its relation with later development is not completely clear. To our knowledge, there are few studies exploring the relationship between early milestones and the performance of children with DS on standard tools of developmental assessment from low and middle-income countries (LMIC). METHODS: Indian children with DS confirmed by karyotype analysis (4 months to 1 year) commenced on early intervention (EI) were studied for the age of achievement of four milestones: roll over,

Traumatic brain injury and long-term associations with work, divorce and academic achievement.

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic brain injuries (TBI), irrespective of severity, may have long-term social implications. This study explores the relationships between TBI severity and outcomes related to work stability, divorce, and academic achievement. METHODS: Using a Danish nationwide sample of persons with and without TBI, we employed case-control and longitudinal cohort designs. The case-control design utilized individuals aged 18 to 60 years and examined work stability. Each case, employed at time of TBI, was compared with 10 matched controls. The cohort design utilized individuals alive from 1980

Air pollution, children's academic achievement and the potential mediating role of preterm birth.

INTRODUCTION: Previous research has observed relationships between higher prenatal exposure to air pollutants and neurodevelopmental and academic outcomes later in childhood. Identifying intermediate outcomes mediating this relationship would inform prevention and intervention efforts. We aimed to investigate if previously observed associations between prenatal exposure to common urban air pollutants, diesel and perchloroethylene, and performance on third grade standardized tests were mediated through increased risk of preterm birth. METHODS: Data from the 1994-1998 birth cohorts within the N

Characterizing academic performance in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia with population-based achievement tests.

BACKGROUND: Recent shifts from radiation to chemotherapy-based treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) have contributed to reduced long-term morbidity. Despite this, ALL survivors remain at increased risk for long-term cognitive impairments. AIM: To identify demographic and treatment factors associated with school performance in pediatric survivors of ALL. METHODS: We collected standardized test scores for reading, math, and science obtained in a school setting from grades 3-11 in 63 ALL survivors (46.0% boys). Most participants were assessed across multiple grades (median number of

Self-regulation as promotive for academic achievement in young children across risk contexts.

The link between self-regulation and academic achievement in young children is well-documented. However, few studies have examined the extent to which different aspects of self-regulation are more important for early numeracy and literacy for those in contexts of high cumulative risk, such as children experiencing homelessness. In the current study, 116 children ages 4;0-7;1 years (58 residing in an emergency homeless shelter and 58 from a community participant pool) completed assessments of math and reading, as well as multiple measures of self-regulation: executive function (EF), emotion reg

Metabolic control and academic achievement over time among adolescents with type 1 diabetes.

The relation between metabolic control (HbA1c) and achievement (grade point average [GPA]) was examined over a period of 2.5 years (every 6 months) employing a dynamical systems approach that allowed for the examination of whether HbA1c was associated with change in subsequent GPA and vice versa. Metabolic control tends to deteriorate (i.e., with higher HbA1c reflecting poorer metabolic control) during adolescence. It was hypothesized that these higher levels of HbA1c would limit subsequent increases in GPA. The sample included 252 adolescents (Mbaseline age = 12.49 years, SD = 1.53; 53.6% fem

A public health achievement under adversity: the eradication of poliomyelitis from Peru, 1991.

The fight to achieve global eradication of poliomyelitis continues. Although native transmission of poliovirus was halted in the Western Hemisphere by the early 1990s, and only a few cases have been imported in the past few years, much of Latin America's story remains to be told. Peru conducted a successful flexible, or flattened, vertical campaign in 1991. The initial disease-oriented programs began to collaborate with community-oriented primary health care systems, thus strengthening public-private partnerships and enabling the common goal of poliomyelitis eradication to prevail despite ramp

Strategic development in exact calculation: group and individual differences in four achievement subtypes.

This longitudinal study sought to identify developmental changes in strategy use between 5 and 7 years of age when solving exact calculation problems. Four mathematics and reading achievement subtypes were examined at four time points. Five strategies were considered: finger counting, verbal counting, delayed retrieval, automatic retrieval, and derived fact retrieval. Results provided unique insights into children's strategic development in exact calculation at this early stage. Group analysis revealed relationships between mathematical and/or reading difficulties and strategy choice, shift, a

Growth mixture modeling of academic achievement in children of varying birth weight risk.

The extremes of birth weight and preterm birth are known to result in a host of adverse outcomes, yet studies to date largely have used cross-sectional designs and variable-centered methods to understand long-term sequelae. Growth mixture modeling (GMM) that utilizes an integrated person- and variable-centered approach was applied to identify latent classes of achievement from a cohort of school-age children born at varying birth weights. GMM analyses revealed 2 latent achievement classes for calculation, problem-solving, and decoding abilities. The classes differed substantively and persisten

Achievement of target blood pressure levels in chronic kidney disease: a salty question?

A large body of evidence supports the validity of lowering blood pressure (BP) to prevent cardiovascular (CV) disease in the general population. This issue becomes even more critical in renal patients because they carry a greater CV risk across the entire spectrum of chronic kidney disease (CKD). In these patients, achievement of lower BP levels also is fundamental to limit the progression of renal damage, especially in the presence of significant proteinuria. Although expert panels have strongly recommended to intensively decrease BP in patients with CKD, management of hypertension in these p

The relationship between mode of female masturbation and achievement of orgasm in coitus.

To determine the relationship between masturbatory and coital behavior, 117 middle-class female volunteers were classified into three styles of masturbatory behavior--direct, indirect, and nonmasturbators. Direct masturbation was defined as the direct digital manipulation of the clitoris or use of a vibrator. Indirect masturbation included all other methods of masturbation not defined as direct. The classification was done on the basis of responses to a questionnaire. Of the masturbators 70% reported no change in their masturbatory style from initial masturbatory experiences. No relationship w

The relationship of the WISC-R to academic achievement in a clinical population.

Investigated the validity of the WISC-R as a predictor of academic achievement in a population of emotionally disturbed adolescents (N = 35). Correlations and regression equations were derived between the WISC-R and two standardized measures of academic achievement, the PIAT and Woodcock. Verbal and Full Scale IQ estimates correlated at significant levels with the achievement measures used, and Verbal IQ estimates were the best single predictor of achievement. Performance IQ estimates were the least predictive and, as joint predictors, did not add any unique predictability. In comparison to th
