Acinetobacter baumannii Nosocomial Meningitis Secondary to Neurosurgical Intervention: A Case Report.

Nosocomial meningitis is a serious complication of neurosurgical procedures, associated with high morbidity and mortality, as well as significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Among the causative pathogens, Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) is particularly concerning due to its ability to survive for prolonged periods in the hospital environment, its opportunistic virulence, and, especially, its tendency to develop multidrug resistance to antimicrobial agents. Diagnosis is often difficult in the postoperative setting, particularly when the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is altered as

Repurposing bleomycin against Acinetobacter baumannii HisG: computational, biophysical, and antibacterial evidence.

Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) has become a serious clinical threat due to its increasing antibiotic resistance, particularly in hospital environments. As conventional treatments become less effective, there is an urgent need to explore alternative therapeutic strategies. One promising target is the histidine biosynthesis pathway, which is absent in humans but essential for bacterial survival. This study focuses on ATP phosphoribosyltransferase (HisG), the enzyme that catalyzes the first committed step in histidine biosynthesis. We investigated whether Bleomycin, a known anticancer dru

Colistin resistance and biofilm formation in carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii isolates.

This study aimed to evaluate colistin susceptibility and biofilm formation in carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) clinical isolates and to compare planktonic minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) with biofilm-associated minimum biofilm inhibitory concentrations (MBICs). A total of 105 non-duplicate CRAB isolates were analyzed. Colistin MICs were determined using broth microdilution, biofilm formation was quantified by crystal violet staining, and MBIC values were assessed using a resazurin-based biofilm susceptibility assay. Nine of 105 isolates (8.57%) were colistin-resista

Antibiotic Resistance and Biofilm Gene Distribution in Colistin-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii.

Acinetobacter baumannii, a multidrug-resistant opportunistic bacterium, poses a substantial hazard in hospital settings. The emergence of colistin- and tigecycline-resistant strains further limits treatment options and necessitates detailed investigation of resistance mechanisms. A total of 144 clinical A. baumannii isolates from multiple hospitals in Iran were identified using standard microbiological and molecular techniques. Antimicrobial susceptibility was assessed using both disk diffusion and broth microdilution techniques. Biofilm formation was quantified by crystal violet staining. Res

Multidrug-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii: A Wily, Existential Threat to Modern Healthcare.

Acinetobacter baumannii, a Gram-negative WHO critical priority pathogen, is an opportunistic bacterial pathogen associated with increasing hospital- and community-acquired infections. The emergence of a multidrug-resistant pathogen, especially the carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii (CRAB), has left us with extremely limited treatment options and, consequently, very high morbidity and mortality rates. As per WHO, the transmissibility of A. baumannii is considered between moderate to high. This review provides a unique comprehensive insight into pathogen's global epidemiology, pathogenesis, host-

Bacteriophage Indie resensitizes multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii to antibiotics in vitro.

Antimicrobial resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii poses a significant global health challenge. Phage therapy, particularly through phage-antibiotic synergy (PAS), offers a promising strategy to combat this pathogen. This study demonstrated significant PAS, where the combination of phage Indie and ceftazidime achieved a bacterial reduction of more than 85% of A. baumannii strain AbAK03 at 17 h using low doses. Notably, this combination overcame phage resistance observed at 4 h when the phage was used alone, extending bacterial eradication by 13 h. Furthermore, phage Indie restored bacterial s

Targeting Acinetobacter baumannii lipase by coniferous species through metabolomics supported approach.

The opportunistic pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii is a particularly problematic nosocomial threat worldwide, leading to high morbidity and mortality rates due to its multiple resistance mechanisms, including the production of lipolytic enzymes. Herein, the aerial parts of three coniferous plants, Pinus canariensis C. Sm. (PC), Cupressus lusitanica Mill. (CL), and Cupressus arizonica Greene. (CA), were extracted and fractionated. Among these, the CA extract followed by CL and then PC, exhibited the highest inhibition of bacterial lipase activity, with half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC5

Characterization of Increased Extracellular Vesicle-Mediated Tigecycline Resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii.

Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) is the most detrimental pathogen that causes hospital-acquired infections. Tigecycline (TIG) is currently used as a potent antibiotic for treating CRAB infections; however, its overuse substantially induces the development of resistant isolates. Some molecular aspects of the resistance mechanisms of AB to TIG have been reported, but they are expected to be far more complicated and diverse than what has been characterized thus far. In this study, we identified bacterial extracellular vesicles (EVs), which are nano-sized lipid-bilayered spheric
