[Contralateral suppression of latency during distortion product otoacoustic emissions detection in guinea pigs].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the cochlear micromechanics and the function of cochlear efferent system by detecting the distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) with or without contralateral acoustic stimulation. METHODS: The DPOAE amplitude and latency of the cubic DPOAE (2f1-f2) were measured at f2 = 2, 4 and 6 kHz with or without 70 dB SPL broad-band noise contralateral stimulation in ears of 12 healthy pigmented guinea pigs, which were divided into two groups(A and B) and tested with different primary intensity level combinations. On the next day, an operation was made to open the aco

Acoustic cues to place of articulation and the McGurk effect: the role of release bursts, aspiration, and formant transitions.

The McGurk effect demonstrates that the perceived place of articulation of an auditory consonant (such as/bi/) can be influenced by the simultaneous presentation of a videotape of a talker saying a conflicting consonant such as /gi/. Usually, such a presentation is perceived by observers as "di" or "delta i" (known as fusion responses). The reverse pairing (auditory /gi/ paired with a visual /bi/) results in "bgi." percepts. These are known as combination responses. In the current study, three experiments examined how acoustic information about place of articulation contained within the releas

[The human stapedius reflex by ipsilateral electrical stimulation of the auditory meatal skin (author's transl)].

A modified method for eliciting a stapedius reflex by electrical stimulation of the meatal skin is presented. In contrast to the acoustically elicited stapedius reflex, the electrically-induced response is only ipsilateral, and can be ablated by anesthesia of the meatal skin. Contralateral acoustical and ipsilateral electrical stimulations lead to a summation effect of the amplitude off the stapedius reflex. When presented simultaneously, subthreshold electrical and acoustical stimulations may produce a reflectory contraction of the stapedius muscle. Similar responses can be found in diseases

Prognostic significance of preoperative electrophysiologic investigation for facial nerve outcome in acoustic neuroma surgery.

The prognostic significance of transcranial magnetic stimulation and nasal muscle F-wave recording to predict postoperative facial nerve function was assessed in 24 patients with unilateral acoustic neuromas (mean diameter, 31 mm) and clinically intact facial nerve function. Latency of F waves and response to cortical magnetic stimulation, as well as F ratios, central motor conduction time, and the ratio of response latency to cortical and cisternal magnetic stimulation were significantly increased. Outcome analysis revealed no significant correlation between preoperative electrophysiologic ch

Norepinephrine depletion in the amygdala inhibits CRF-41, ACTH, and corticosterone responses following photic simulation.

The effects of amygdaloid norepinephrine depletion by 6-hydroxydopamine on changes in corticotropin releasing factor-41 (CRF-41) and serum adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and corticosterone levels, following neural stimuli were investigated. In intact animals, photic or acoustic stimulation caused CRF-41 depletion from the median eminence and a rise in serum ACTH and corticosterone levels. In rats with amygdalar norepinephrine depletion there were no changes in basal CRF-41, ACTH, or corticosterone levels. However, the above responses of the hypothalamo-pituitary adrenocortical axis were bl

Feasibility Study of a Mechanical Real-Time Feedback System for Optimizing the Sound Transfer in the Reconstructed Middle Ear.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate electromechanical excitation as an alternative excitation mode for middle ear transfer function (METF) measurements as well as real-time feedback in prosthetic ossicular reconstruction. METHOD: In eight human cadaveric temporal bones, the ossicular chain was excited using acoustic and mechanical (floating mass transducer, FMT) stimulation to determine the METF. After disconnecting the ossicular chain and reconstruction with partial or total prosthesis the METFs were measured again. Continuous FMT stimulation was then applied to improve the prosthesis' position using rea

[Clinical interpretation of microphonic potentials by electrocochleography].

The clinical electrocochleography essentially allows the registration of the global action potential of the acoustic nerve. The use of acoustic stimulations with alternating polarity eliminates the cochlear microphonics. In severe deafness, where no action potential can be registered, even not with maximal acoustic impulses, it can be interesting to register the microphonic potentials. This can be done by using acoustic stimulations with the same polarity. If some microphonic potentials can be registered by this technique, one can assume that the ciliated cells are -- at least partially -- una

Promontory testing in neurotologic diagnosis.

The ability of promontory testing (PT) to differentiate a retrocochlear from a cochlear lesion in a group of 88 patients having unilateral sensorineural hearing loss was assessed. Promontory stimulation was performed, using the Nucleus Promontory Stimulator (model Z10012, Cochlear Corporation, Melbourne, Australia), by placing a needle electrode transtympanically on the basal turn of the cochlea. Patients with measurable hearing gave inconsistent results. Patients who had undergone eighth nerve section or translabyrinthine removal of acoustic neuroma were used as controls. They had no percepti

Acoustic-electric interactions in the guinea pig auditory nerve: simultaneous and forward masking of the electrically evoked compound action potential.

The study investigated the time course of the effects of acoustic and electric stimulation on the electrically evoked compound action potential (ECAP). Adult guinea pigs were used in acute experimental sessions. Bursts of acoustic noise and high-rate (5000 pulses/s) electric pulse trains were used as maskers. Biphasic electric pulses were used as probes. ECAPs were recorded from the auditory nerve trunk. Simultaneous masking of the ECAP with acoustic noise featured an onset effect and a decrease in the amount of masking to a steady state. It was characterized by a two-component exponential fun

The effect of acoustic stimulus of different continuity pattern on plasma concentration of catecholamines in humans during submaximal exercise.

The purpose of the study was determination of adrenaline and noradrenaline concentrations in peripheral blood in 13 men aged 20--22 years subjected to acoustic stimulation of continuous, intermittent and pulse pattern during graded submaximal exercise. The studied subjects performed physical exercise on a cycle ergometer at workloads of 2 W/kg of body mass. The noise produced during the exercise had peak acoustic pressure of 100--120 dB, at frequencies ranging from 63 Hz to 4000 Hz. The exposure to noise and exercise lasted 15 minutes. Catecholamines in the peripheral blood were determined by

5-Hydroxytryptophan, a precursor for serotonin synthesis, reduces seizure-induced respiratory arrest.

OBJECTIVE: The DBA/1 mouse is a relevant animal model of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP), as it exhibits seizure-induced respiratory arrest (S-IRA) evoked by acoustic stimulation, followed by cardiac arrhythmia and death. Defects in serotonergic neurotransmission may contribute to S-IRA. The tryptophan hydroxylase-2 (TPH2) enzyme converts L-tryptophan to 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), a precursor for central nervous system (CNS) serotonin (5-HT) synthesis; and DBA/1 mice have a polymorphism that decreases TPH2 activity. We, therefore, hypothesized that supplementation with 5-HTP may

Electro-vibrational stimulation results in improved speech perception in noise for cochlear implant users with bilateral residual hearing.

A cochlear implant is a neuroprosthetic device that can restore speech perception for people with severe to profound hearing loss. Because of recent evolutions, a growing number of people with a cochlear implant have useful residual acoustic hearing. While combined electro-acoustic stimulation has been shown to improve speech perception for this group of people, some studies report limited adoption rates. Here, we present electro-vibrational stimulation as an alternative combined stimulation strategy that similarly targets the full cochlear reserve. This novel strategy combines the electrical

Synchronous electrical stimulation of laryngeal muscles: an alternative for enhancing recovery of unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis.

BACKGROUND: Although electrical stimulation of the larynx has been widely studied for treating voice disorders, its effectiveness has not been assessed under safety and comfortable conditions. This article describes design, theoretical issues, and preliminary evaluation of an innovative system for transdermal electrical stimulation of the larynx. The proposed design includes synchronization of electrical stimuli with laryngeal neuromuscular activity. OBJECTIVE: To study whether synchronous electrical stimulation of the larynx could be helpful for improving voice quality in patients with dysph

Vibro-EAS: a proposal for electroacoustic stimulation.

HYPOTHESIS: In situ evaluation of the vibration performance of a hybrid system for intracochlear fluid stimulation, constructed from a floating mass transducer (FMT) coupled to an electric acoustic stimulation (EAS) cochlea implant (CI) electrode. BACKGROUND: EAS uses both CI technology to restore severe-to-profound hearing loss at high frequencies and acoustic amplification for mild-to-moderate hearing loss in the low-to-mid frequency range. More patients with residual hearing are becoming candidates for EAS surgery because of the improved techniques for hearing preservation. Most patients w

The Reticulospinal Pathway Does Not Increase Its Contribution to the Strength of Contralesional Muscles in Stroke Survivors as Compared to Ipsilesional Side or Healthy Controls.

OBJECTIVE: Startling acoustic stimulation (SAS), via activation of reticulospinal (RS) pathways, has shown to increase muscle strength in healthy subjects. We hypothesized that, given RS hyperexcitability in stroke survivors, SAS could increase muscle strength in stroke survivors. The objective was to quantify the effect of SAS on maximal and sub-maximal voluntary elbow flexion on the contralesional (impaired) side in stroke survivors as compared to ipsilesional (non-impaired) side and healthy controls. DESIGN: Thirteen hemiparetic stroke survivors and 12 healthy subjects volunteered for this

Efferent Modulation of Stimulus Frequency Otoacoustic Emission Fine Structure.

Otoacoustic emissions, sounds generated in the inner ear, have become a convenient non-invasive tool to examine the efferent modulation of cochlear mechanics. Activation of the medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferents has been shown to alter the magnitude of these emissions. When the effects of efferent activation on the detailed spectral structures of these emissions have been examined, a shift of the spectral patterns toward higher frequencies has been reported for distortion product and spontaneous otoacoustic emissions. Stimulus frequency otoacoustic emissions (SFOAEs) have been proposed as th

Effects of olivocochlear bundle section on otoacoustic emissions in humans: efferent effects in comparison with control subjects.

The effects of contralateral acoustic stimulation on evoked otoacoustic emissions (OAE) were examined in three subject groups in order that the impact of efferent olivocochlear bundle section (as a consequence of vestibular neurectomy) could be compared with normal findings, and with a control surgical population. Results demonstrated that the inhibitory effect of contralateral noise on OAE amplitude was absent from the cochlea with severed efferent fibers. These findings appear to be independent of acoustic reflex activity, as suppression was absent despite normal reflexes. Inter-aural suppre

Validation of the TruBlue Light Laser for Laryngeal Somatosensory and Perturbation Testing.

OBJECTIVES: Clinical assessment of laryngeal somatosensation is limited by the lack of precise tools to directly stimulate the larynx and quantify sensorimotor responses. This study validated a blue light laser method for laryngeal somatosensory testing in vocally healthy adults and developed acoustic measures to quantify vocal responses to controlled laryngeal perturbations. METHODS: In this prospective validation study, a 445-nm diode blue light laser was delivered through a channeled flexible laryngoscope to the arytenoid mucosa. Single subablative pulses (1-10 W, 30 ms) were applied durin

The simulation and experimental validation of a novel noninvasive multi-target electrical stimulation method.

The brain is a complex system of structure and function. Brain diseases and brain functional abnormalities often involve multiple functionally connected regions, including the deep brain. Studies have shown that multi-target electrical stimulation is more effective than single-target electrical stimulation. However, non-invasive multi-target electromagnetic stimulation, such as multi-target transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) cannot meet the needs of synchronous multi-target accurate ele

A physiologically-inspired model reproducing the speech intelligibility benefit in cochlear implant listeners with residual acoustic hearing.

This study introduces a speech intelligibility model for cochlear implant users with ipsilateral preserved acoustic hearing that aims at simulating the observed speech-in-noise intelligibility benefit when receiving simultaneous electric and acoustic stimulation (EA-benefit). The model simulates the auditory nerve spiking in response to electric and/or acoustic stimulation. The temporally and spatially integrated spiking patterns were used as the final internal representation of noisy speech. Speech reception thresholds (SRTs) in stationary noise were predicted for a sentence test using an aut
