BACKGROUND: There has been no study using magnetic resonance arthrography (MRA) to compare clinical features and structural integrity after arthroscopic repair of bursal and articular side partial-thickness rotator cuff tears (PTRCTs).
HYPOTHESIS: The 2 groups studied, which consisted of patients who underwent arthroscopic repair for either the articular side or the bursal side, would show significant improvement in overall outcomes after surgery, even though clinical outcomes and structural integrity would not be significantly different. It was thought that the incidence of preoperative posi

AIM: We reviewed the last decade of literature to update a previous publication on this topic by the senior author. In New Zealand, traumatic causation has implications for entitlement for treatment though the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC). Acuity and chronicity may also be relevant in determining repairability.
METHODS: Literature was reviewed regarding acromial morphology, greater tuberosity (GT) cysts, acromiohumeral interval (AHI), fatty degeneration and atrophy, acromioclavicular (AC) arthrosis, tendinopathy, bursal changes and other features.
RESULTS: Some factors can be cons

Mechanical impingement of the rotator cuff tendons against the acromion (subacromial) and glenoid (internal) during shoulder motions has long been thought to contribute to tears. Clinically, the risk for impingement is thought to be influenced by scapular movement impairments. Therefore, our purpose was to determine the extent to which simulated changes in scapular orientation impact the proximity between the rotator cuff tendon footprint and the acromion and glenoid during scapular plane abduction. Specifically, shoulder kinematics were tracked in 25 participants using a high-speed biplane vi

BACKGROUND: Rehabilitation according to Vojta is a neurophysiological method used to obtain reflex responses in muscles following stimulation of particular activation zones.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to objectively evaluate the muscular responses following stimulation according to Vojta's method. The possible routes of spinal transmission responsible for the phenomenon of muscle activation in upper and lower extremities are considered.
METHODS: Polyelectromyographic (pEMG) recordings in the upper and lower extremities in healthy volunteers (N = 25; aged 24 ± 1 year) were performed to find

Stress fractures in children are rare compared with the incidence in adults. This report describes an 11-year-old girl with stress fractures of the acromion, clavicle, and first rib on the left and contralateral fractures of the first and second ribs. It was eventually discovered that these fractures were caused by a nervous tic consisting of repetitive, vigorous shrugging and translation of the shoulders.

In four patients, two with brachial plexus palsy and two with arthrogryposis, the entire pectoralis major muscle was transplanted to act as an elbow flexor, rotating it on its neurovascular pedicles and attaching the tendon to the acromion and the muscle origin to the tuberosity of the radius. Excellent motion and power was restored in three patients. One procedure failed due to fibrofatty degeneration of the transplanted muscle.

The shoulder is an intricate joint, capable of a wide range of movements for both daily activities and physical exercise. This intricate joint is susceptible to various injuries and conditions due to its design. Shoulder impingement syndrome (SIS), also clinically recognized as subacromial impingement syndrome (SAIS), is a prevalent source of shoulder discomfort, which is a spectrum of disorders such as rotator cuff tendinopathy, partial or complete tears, and inflammation of the subacromial bursa. SAIS can be caused by intrinsic causes, such as tendon degeneration, and extrinsic factors, such

External shoulder impingement is commonly diagnosed by passively moving the shoulder into various positions of elevation and internal rotation in order to perform impingement sign maneuvers. There is a lack of agreement among clinicians regarding the positions of the anatomic structures in the subacromial space when these maneuvers are performed. The purpose of this study was to use magnetic resonance imaging to identify and measure the changes in anatomic structures in the subacromial space as the arm was moved from complete rest to 160 degrees of forward flexion during the Neer and Hawkins i

It is difficult to determine the size and localization of rotator cuff tears preoperatively. But with the special arthrographic technique, a diagnosis with about 80% accuracy was possible in 65 surgically confirmed rotator cuff tears. With this technique, 22 massive cuff tears were found in conservatively treated patients. In these patients, the plain roentgenograms obtained at the initial examination were also analyzed. The roentgenographic findings included narrowing of the acromiohumeral interval and degenerative changes of the humeral head, the tuberosities, the acromion, the acromioclavic

Impingement after reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) is believed to occur from repetitive contact in adduction between the humeral component and the inferior scapular pillar. The primary purpose of this biomechanical study was to confirm the presence of different types of impingement and to examine which daily-life movements are responsible for them. A secondary aim was to provide recommendations on the type of components that would best minimize notching and loss of range of motion (ROM). The study included 12 fresh frozen shoulder specimens; each had a computed tomography (CT) image of the

The purpose of this essay is to illustrate sonographic findings for patients with abnormalities of the tendon of the long head of the biceps muscle of the arm. The tendon is vulnerable to a variety of injuries caused by abnormalities of its osseous and soft-tissue supports, including impingement of the tendon against the acromion and arthritis of the glenohumeral joint. These abnormalities include acute and chronic tenosynovitis, rupture, subluxation, and dislocation.

PURPOSE: To macroscopically, histologically, and radiologically describe a time-dependent remodeling process of a neo-tendon or -ligament in the shoulder after the arthroscopic Latarjet procedure.
METHODS: During follow-up surgery after the arthroscopic Latarjet procedure, 17 shoulders in 16 patients were evaluated for a remodeled tendon-like structure. The mean overall follow-up period was 27.4 months. The mean time between the arthroscopic Latarjet procedure and revision was 11.6 months. All shoulders were evaluated with magnetic resonance imaging, and seven histologic specimens were obtain

Forty upper limbs (20 right and 20 left) of spontaneously aborted human fetuses were examined to determine the branching patterns of the musculocutaneous nerve. The mean age of the fetuses was 21.3 weeks. We identified three branching patterns of the musculocutaneous nerve to the biceps muscle. Type I with a single primary branch occurred in 47.5% of cases. Type II with two primary branches each to a separate head of the biceps muscle was observed in 42.5% of cases. Type III consisted of two primary branches, the proximal dividing into two branches, each to a different head of the biceps, and

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluates the role of anatomic scapular morphology in acromion and scapular spine fracture (SSAF) risk after reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA).
METHODS: Twelve scapular measurements were captured based on pilot study data, including scapular width measurements at the acromion (Z1), middle of the scapular spine (Z2), and medial to the first major angulation (Z3). Measurements were applied to 3D-CT scans from patients who sustained SSAF after RSA (SSAF group) and compared with those who did not (control group). Measurements were done by four investigators, and the int

The use of metal wires, called Kirschner wires, is a simple and effective fixation method for the correction of shoulder fractures and of dislocations in orthopedic surgery. Wire migration during the postoperative follow-up is a possible complication of the procedure. The authors present the case of a 48-year-old male patient, a business administrator, who suffered a fall from his own height during a soccer match resulting in right shoulder trauma. The patient was treated at a specialized orthopedics and trauma hospital and was diagnosed with a grade V acromioclavicular dislocation. Four days a

When a rotator cuff tear occurs, forces compressing the humeral head toward the glenoid are disturbed, and the kinematics of the glenohumeral joint change. Therefore, stress distributions at the coracoacromial arch in cuff tear shoulders should differ from those in normal shoulders. To investigate this hypothesis, we studied stress distribution patterns at the coracoacromial arch in normal and cuff tear shoulders using a computed tomography (CT) osteoabsorptiometry method, in which bone density correlates directly with long-term physiologic loading. Eight normal subjects and 11 patients with c

The acromion and lateral clavicle normally lie outside the glenohumeral joint capsule. During routine dissection of an 80-year-old female donor, bilateral glenohumeral-acromioclavicular composite articulations were identified. In each shoulder, the surface opposing the humeral head extended superiorly to include a variant acromion and lateral clavicle; the humeral heads appeared morphologically typical. In the more extensively dissected right shoulder, the lateral end of the clavicle was broad, flattened, and polished where it opposed the humeral head, with a gross appearance consistent with c
