Single acupressure on ST36 does not modulate skin blood flow and sympathetic nerve activity during and after cold stimulation of the hand.

Acupressure on ST36 (Zusanli), located on the lower leg, commonly used to optimize autonomic nerve activity and systemic blood flow in traditional Chinese medicine. However, its efficacy remains controversial. This study hypothesized that a single acupressure on ST36 attenuates sympathetic nerve activity and mitigate skin vasoconstriction in response to cold stimulation. Twelve participants received either 5-min acupressure or sham pressure in the right ST36; subsequently, their left hand was immersed in cold water (10°C) for 10 min. Heart rate (HR), arterial pressure, skin temperature, and bl

Assessment of a manual therapy and acupressure method as a treatment of nonspecific low back pain: A prospective, observational and non-interventional cohort study.

The first-line treatment for nonspecific low back pain (LBP) relief is physical exercise; however, there is no uniformity in recommendations regarding the type of exercise, and physicians predominantly prescribe pharmacological treatments. This creates a treatment gap in non-pharmacological management of LBP. Preliminary data suggest that manual therapy and acupressure could be relevant therapeutic options. The primary objective of this study was to describe the evolution of pain in patients with nonspecific LBP persisting for at least 4 weeks who received 2 treatment sessions combining manual

The combination effects of body acupuncture and auricular acupressure compared to sham acupuncture for body weight control: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is an increasingly prevalent chronic condition that is associated with serious morbidity and mortality. Excess body weight is a risk factor contributing to diseases such as hypertension, heart disease, hypercholesterolaemia, diabetes mellitus, cerebrovascular disease, gall bladder disease, and some types of cancer. Almost all the Western anti-obesity drugs have adverse effects or body weight is regained upon cessation of therapy. Recent studies have found that acupuncture had a similar efficacy as the Western anti-obesity drugs with fewer reported adverse effects. However,

Auricular Point Acupressure Self-Management (APA-SM) program for chronic musculoskeletal pain among rural populations: a protocol for a pragmatic, randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMP) is a leading cause of incurred personal healthcare costs and disability in the USA. It disproportionately affects rural populations, who are more likely to be uninsured, lack access to a regular healthcare provider and experience a higher prevalence of CMP. As a result of reduced access to non-pharmacological care, there is greater reliance on opioids. The Auricular Point Acupressure - Self-Management (APA-SM) program is a simple, needleless, evidence-based therapy that empowers individuals to self-manage their pain. Preliminary studies, includi

Self-administered acupressure for veterans with chronic back pain: Study design and methodology of a type 1 hybrid effectiveness implementation randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic low back pain is prevalent and disabling in Veterans, but effective pain management is challenging. Clinical practice guidelines emphasize multimodal pain management including evidence-based complementary and integrative health treatments such as acupressure as a first line of care. Unfortunately, the ability to replicate interventions, cost, resources, and limited access are implementation barriers. Self-administered acupressure has shown positive effects on pain and can be practiced anywhere with little to no side effects. METHODS/DESIGN: The aims of this Type 1 hybrid e
