Preparing horses for hippotherapy programs requires management approaches that prioritize animal welfare and facilitate adaptation to novel stimuli. This study monitored physiological responses during the implementation of a progressive taming protocol for Quarter Horses intended for hippotherapy. Otoneurological and respiratory tests were performed on 32 patients after whiplash injury caused by a rear-end car collision. Oculomotor and cervico-ocular test results were generally normal. In a significantly large number of case, the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) was hyperactive (n = 17; 53%) and the respiratory test results were typical of the hyperventilation syndrome (HVS) (n = 12; 38%). In 44 persons (19 to 39 years old, visual acuity better than 1.0), mesopic vision and sensitivity to glare were measured under binocular conditions by means of Mesoptometer I and Mesoptometer II (Oculus) and Nyktometer (Rodenstock). In emergencies in ophthalmology a distinction must be made between systemic emergency situations that manifest in the eye and purely ocular emergencies. The latter threaten vision to varying degrees and therefore require differentiated treatment and care by the ophthalmologist. This requires considerable responsibility and high expertise as all subdisciplines of ophthalmology can be affected. Due to demographic developments and other factors, the number of emergency patients is increasing, which requires adaptation in resources and clinical management of patients.
