Rate adaptive pacing in sick sinus syndrome: effects of pacing modes and intrinsic conduction on physiological responses, arrhythmias, symptomatology and quality of life.

An atrial-based pacing mode is superior to ventricular constant rate demand pacing (VVI) mode in patients with sick sinus syndrome (SSS) by providing both rate adaptation and atrioventricular (AV) synchrony. The use of a non-atrial sensor to overcome chronotropic incompetence and preserve normal intrinsic AV conduction in pacemaker therapy for SSS was investigated in 15 consecutive patients (mean age 66 +/- 2 years). All had intact AV conduction (antegrade conduction capacity > 100 beats.min-1 and an atrial paced to intrinsic R interval of < or = 220 ms). DDDR pacemakers capable of being progr

CREB Binding at the Zfp189 Promoter Within Medium Spiny Neuron Subtypes Differentially Regulates Behavioral and Physiological Adaptations Over the Course of Cocaine Use.

BACKGROUND: Over the course of chronic drug use, brain transcriptional neuroadaptation is thought to contribute to a change in drug use behavior over time. The function of the transcription factor CREB (cAMP response element binding protein) within the nucleus accumbens (NAc) has been well documented in opposing the rewarding properties of many classes of drugs, yet the gene targets through which CREB causally manifests these lasting neuroadaptations remain unknown. Here, we identify zinc finger protein 189 (Zfp189) as a CREB target gene that is transcriptionally responsive to acute and chroni

Nrf2-regulated redox signaling in brain endothelial cells adapted to physiological oxygen levels: Consequences for sulforaphane mediated protection against hypoxia-reoxygenation.

Ischemic stroke is associated with a surge in reactive oxygen species generation during reperfusion. The narrow therapeutic window for the delivery of intravenous thrombolysis and endovascular thrombectomy limits therapeutic options for patients. Thus, understanding the mechanisms regulating neurovascular redox defenses are key for improved clinical translation. Our previous studies in a rodent model of ischemic stroke established that activation of Nrf2 defense enzymes by pretreatment with sulforaphane (SFN) affords protection against neurovascular and neurological deficits. We here further i

Assessment of adaptive and physiological trait expression in one-year-old male calves from Braford, Brangus, Tulianguy, Hereford, and Angus breeds in northern Uruguay.

The Uruguayan livestock system, particularly in the northern region, is predominantly pastoral and highly dependent on climatic conditions, making it vulnerable to increasing droughts, high temperatures, and reduced rainfall. The objective of this study was to evaluate breed-level thermoregulatory responses under field heat stress using rectal temperature (RT), respiratory rate (RR), and surface temperatures across three THIhadj strata. Physiological responses were assessed in one-year-old castrated male calves from five beef breeds: Angus (n = 5), Hereford (n = 5), Brangus (n = 10), Braford (

Adaptive immunity shapes baseline physiology of M. tuberculosis in high-dose versus low-dose infection BALB/c mouse drug treatment models.

Preclinical tuberculosis (TB) drug evaluation relies heavily on mouse infection models. Drug efficacy varies depending on inoculum and the timing of treatment initiation. These differences reflect, in part, physiological adaptations of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) to host immune pressure. We used novel molecular markers of pathogen health (RS ratio and SEARCH-TB) to contrast Mtb phenotypes in the BALB/c high dose aerosol (HDA) subacute TB and low dose aerosol (LDA) chronic TB infection models, focusing on the onset of adaptive immunity. We found that the onset of adaptive immunity coincide

Blood flow restriction during small-sided games enhances physiological adaptations and performance improvements in well-trained basketball players: A randomized controlled trial.

This study examined whether adding blood flow restriction (BFR) to small-sided games (SSG) augments cardiorespiratory/anaerobic adaptations and lower-limb muscular performance in well-trained male collegiate basketball players. Twenty-four atheletes (age: 21.0 ± 1.6 years) were randomized to either an experimental (SSG+BFR; 100-130% of leg systolic pressure) or a control group (SSG; without BFR) and completed eight 3 vs. 3 player-SSG sessions over four weeks (4 sets of 3-4.5-min bouts; 3-min rest intervals). Individualized monitoring of heat illness risk: novel adaptive physiological strain index to assess exercise-heat strain from athletes to fully encapsulated workers.

Objective. Exercise-heat strain estimation approaches often involve combinations of body core temperature (Tcore), skin temperature (Tsk) and heart rate (HR). A successful existing measure is the 'Physiological Strain Index' (PSI), which combines HR and Tcore values to estimate strain. However, depending on variables such as aerobic fitness and clothing, the equation's 'maximal/critical' Tcore must be changed to accurately represent the strain, in part because high Tsk (small Tcore-Tsk) can increase cardiovascular strain and thereby negatively affect performance. Here, an 'adaptive PSI' (aPSI)

Harnessing the phytobiome for resilience: Biofilm-forming PGPR mediate physiological adaptations through enhanced seed colonization and oxidative regulation to mitigate drought stress in Cyamopsis tetragonoloba.

Global climate change and the escalating drought cycles have severely compromised agricultural productivity in marginalized agroecosystems worldwide. This has necessitated a deeper understanding of the role of the phytobiome in the host plant's resilience. Although seed biopriming with plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) is widely acknowledged for alleviating abiotic stress, the role of PGPB biofilms in enhancing the efficiency of biopriming remains a critical knowledge gap. In this study, the biofilm-forming capacity of nine thermohalotolerant, ACC-deaminase-producing PGPB strains previous

Development of an age-adapted simplified acute physiology score II using first-24-hour variables in pediatric patients with congenital diaphragmatic hernia: the CDH-SAPS.

UNLABELLED: Accurate early risk stratification in patients with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) remains challenging, as existing pediatric mortality prediction scores may not adequately reflect CDH-related pathophysiology. The main objective was to develop an early risk stratification model by adaptation of the Simplified Acute Physiology Score II (SAPS II) for mortality and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) requirement prediction in patients with CDH. This retrospective single-center study included pediatric patients with CDH treated at a tertiary neonatal and pediatric intensi

A Comprehensive Proteome and Acetyl-Proteome Atlas Reveals Molecular Mechanisms Adapting to the Physiological Changes From Pre-laying to Peak-Laying Stage in Liver of Hens (Gallus gallus).

Along with sexual maturity, the liver undergoes numerous metabolic processes to adapt the physiological changes associated with egg-laying in hens. However, mechanisms regulating the processes were unclear. In this study, comparative hepatic proteome and acetyl-proteome between pre- and peak-laying hens were performed. The results showed that the upregulated proteins were mainly related to lipid and protein biosynthesis, while the downregulated proteins were mainly involved in pyruvate metabolism and were capable of inhibiting gluconeogenesis and lactate synthesis in peak-laying hens compared

Automated adaptive detection and reconstruction of quiescent cardiac phases in free-running whole-heart acquisitions using Synchronicity Maps from PHysiological mOtioN In Cine (SYMPHONIC) MRI.

PURPOSE: To reconstruct whole-heart images from free-running acquisitions through automated selection of data acceptance windows (ES: end-systole, MD: mid-diastole, ED: end-diastole) that account for heart rate variability (HRV). METHODS: SYMPHONIC was developed and validated in simulated (N = 1000) and volunteer (N = 14) data. To validate SYMPHONIC, the position of the detected acceptance windows, total duration, and resulting ventricular volume were compared to the simulated ground truth to establish metrics for temporal error, quiescent interval duration, and volumetric error, respectively

Post-exercise home-based hot-bathing with/without light exercise: effects on physiological adaptations to short-term high-intensity resistance training in healthy young men.

BACKGROUND: High-intensity resistance training (RT) improves strength via neuromuscular adaptations but also heightens fatigue, potentially limiting gains. Whether post-exercise, home-based hot-bathing, with or without light-exercise, reduces these limitations and enhances neuromuscular adaptations remains unknown. The aims were: 1) to investigate whether home-based hot-bathing improves muscle strength gain and peripheral/central conditions in response to short-term high-intensity RT, and 2) assess whether combining hot-bathing with light exercise augments these benefits, both in healthy young

Can Maturation Level Influence Long-Term Physiological and Physical Adaptations in Youth Female Soccer Players Exposed to Combined Sided Games and HIIT? A Comparison Across Maturation Statuses.

The aim of this study was to assess the effects of a 6-week high-intensity interval training combined with small-sided games (HIIT&SSG) program on maximal strength, sprint performance, and aerobic capacity in female athletes and to examine how these effects vary across different stages of maturity (pre-, mid-, and post-peak height velocity [PHV]). Specifically, we sought to determine whether the improvements in performance outcomes were consistent across maturity groups or if the training effects differed based on the athletes' maturity status. Fifty-four female soccer players (aged 9-16 years

Upper respiratory tract nociceptor stimulation and stress response following acute and repeated Cyfluthrin inhalation in normal and pregnant rats: Physiological rat-specific adaptions can easily be misunderstood as adversities.

This paper reviews the results from past regulatory and mechanistic inhalation studies in rats with the type II pyrethroid Cyfluthrin. Apart from many chemical irritants, Cyfluthrin was shown to be a neuroexcitatory agent without any inherent tissue-destructive or irritant property. Thus, any Cyfluthrin-induced neuroexcitatory afferent sensory stimulus from peripheral nociceptors in the upper respiratory tract is likely to be perceived as a transient stimulus triggering annoyance and/or avoidance by both rats and humans. However, while thermolabile rats respond to such stresses reflexively, ho

Evaluating Predisposition, Infection, Response, and Organ Dysfunction, Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation, and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment Scores for Mortality Prediction in Geriatric Sepsis: Toward Age-adapted Prognostic Models.

Sepsis remains a leading cause of mortality in older adults, whose age-related immune dysfunction, multimorbidity, and frailty complicate both diagnosis and prognostication. Standard scoring systems Predisposition, Infection, Response, and Organ dysfunction (PIRO), Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE), and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) are widely used for risk stratification but were primarily developed in mixed-age populations. Their accuracy and applicability in geriatric sepsis, where physiological reserve and inflammatory response are altered, remain uncerta

Laying the blueprint of abiotic stress tolerance: an analysis on the complexities of the stress matrix.

Extreme weather conditions driven by climate change have resulted in higher average temperatures, more frequent intense heat waves, increased drought conditions, improper soil conditions, as well as increased pest and disease incidence, posing a unique challenge to plants. Until now, several studies have been performed to reveal how plants can acclimatize or cope with these unfavorable conditions. These studies have majorly focused on how plants respond to an individual stress at a particular point in time. But in nature, no stress occurs in isolation; rather, they act mostly in combination.
