Subglottic adenoid cystic carcinoma mistaken for asthma.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma rarely occurs within the subglottic larynx. In this study, a case of subglottic adenoid cystic carcinoma was reported. A 54 year-old Chinese woman developed a sudden onset of chest distress and cough worsening after physical exertion, and was diagnosed with, and treated as, bronchial asthma. Regular anti-asthmatic therapy did not improve the symptoms. Until a sudden dyspnea, a cervicothoracic computerized tomography (CT) revealed that her upper airway was obstructed by a laryngeal tumor. The patient was diagnosed with a subglottic adenoid cystic carcinoma and treated w

An analysis of the incidence of adenoid hypertrophy in allergic children.

INTRODUCTION: The adenoidectomy is the most often made operation in small children but the reasons of adenoid hypertrophy are not completely explained. Some researches show that in part of children, allergy can be a risk factor for adenoid hypertrophy. The main aim of this study was the analysis of adenoid hypertrophy in children with different allergic diseases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two separate groups of children were examined. The study group consisted of 436 children between 4 and 9 years old with allergic rhinitis and/or bronchial asthma and/or atopic dermatitis hypersensitive to house

Growth of the nasopharynx and adenoidal development in Brazilian subjects.

The purpose of this research was to study the growth of the nasopharynx and adenoid development. Lateral cephalometric radiographs obtained from 320 white Brazilian subjects between 4 and 16 years of age were used. All the participants were nose breathers and none of them had previously undergone adenoidectomy. Tracings were made from the radiographs and cephalometric measurements were performed. The results showed that adenoid sagital thickness is larger in the age group 4 - 5 years and decreases progressively. There is a slight increase in the age group 10 - 11 years, but afterwards the decr

[Sleep architecture changes in children with adenoidal hypertrophy].

OBJECTIVE: Adenoidal hypertrophy in children is associated with obstructive manifestations like mouth breathing, snoring, night cough. However, the sleep architecture is poorly defined in children with AH, which is this studies for. METHOD: A computer-assistant diagnostic system was used for polysomnography (PSG) recording. Sleep was scored manually according to the standard set by Rechtschaffen. 47 children with adenotonsillar hypertrophy (AH) were defined by PSG and compared with normal children PSG results. RESULT: (1) Compared with normal children, AH group had increased stage I: (15. 4

Spatial organisation of microbiota in quiescent adenoiditis and tonsillitis.

BACKGROUND: The reasons for recurrent adenotonsillitis are poorly understood. METHODS: The in situ composition of microbiota of nasal (5 children, 25 adults) and of hypertrophied adenoid and tonsillar tissue (50 children, 20 adults) was investigated using a broad range of fluorescent oligonucleotide probes targeted to bacterial rRNA. None of the patients had clinical signs of infection at the time of surgery. RESULTS: Multiple foci of ongoing purulent infections were found within hypertrophied adenoid and tonsillar tissue in 83% of patients, including islands and lawns of bacteria adherent t

[The occurrence of atopic hypersensitivity in children with adenoid hypertrophy].

UNLABELLED: Allergic sensitization of the airways occurs in the mucosa. The lymphatic structure closest to the nasal mucosa is the adenoid. Adenoid hypertrophy (AH) may cause significant morbidity in children but its relationship to atopy has not been intensively studied. To examine the influence of atopy on the adenoid hypertrophy we studied 134 children ages 4 to 8 years, with an average age of 5.4 who had AH. In the analysed group 102 children suffered from difficulty in nose breathing, 61 of children from recurrent upper respiratory tract infections, 51 from recurrent otitis and 40 from he

Dedifferentiation occurring in adenoid cystic carcinoma of the tongue.

A 61-year-old man came to the University of Granada School of Dentistry complaining of a mass involving his ventral tongue. Histopathologic examination of the excised specimen showed adenoid cystic carcinoma in which cribriform and tubular patterns were observed, juxtaposed with an undifferentiated carcinoma, large-cell type. No cervical lymph node metastasis was present, and the patient is alive and free of disease 5 years after treatment. To our knowledge, no similar cases have been reported thus far, though other salivary gland malignancies have been described in association with undifferen

Adenoidal and tonsillar lymphocyte subsets in AIDS children.

Tonsils and adenoids are secondary lymphoid organs exposed to the environment. The most important classifications of AIDS include the lymphocyte subsets of peripheral blood. We have studied the lymphocyte subsets in peripheral blood and secondary lymphoid organs in a control group of children suffering adenotonsillar pathology and in five children with AIDS and the same adenotonsillar pathology. The antigen surface markers were determined by flow cytometry in lymphocytes isolated from peripheral blood, and from tonsils and adenoids after tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, in the control group an

[Bacteriology in infectious and obstructive adenoid-tonsillar pathology].

Infectious and obstructive adenotonsillar processes are common in the pediatric population. Bacteriological and serological studies were made of acute tonsillitis, recurrent acute tonsillitis with tonsillar hypertrophy, and tonsillar hypertrophy. Positive cultures were more frequent in tonsils than in adenoids. Pathogenic microorganisms were isolated more often in infectious than in obstructive processes. Anti-streptococcal antibody titers were raised in infectious processes, but remained within normal limits in obstructive processes. Serum total IgE levels were similar in both processes. Thes

Adenoid cystic carcinoma: an unusual sellar mass.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma represents approximately 20% of tumours of the minor salivary glands. It can originate in the sphenoidal sinus and invade the sella turcica. The authors describe a patient in whom a tumour of this type was shown by computed tomography.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the external auditory canal.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the external auditory canal is much less common than squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma. Signs and symptoms of the case presented here consisted of a longstanding discharging ear, a progressive hearing loss, and the presence of a circumferential subcutaneous induration in the distal third of the external auditory canal. No dizziness, tinnitus, or facial weakness was present. Computed tomography showed a soft tissue mass in the external auditory canal and middle ear with no lytic areas of the mastoid or the temporal region. A biopsy specimen was interpr

Early adenoid cystic carcinoma of the upper oesophagus.

A 70-year-old male patient with an early stage primary adenoid cystic carcinoma of the oesophagus is reported. The 1.5 cm protuberant tumour, located in the upper oesophagus and found during examination for heartburn, was radically resected. It was restricted to the submucosa, which strongly suggests that it originated from the oesophageal glands. Microscopically, the tumour showed sparse S100 cells. This finding is in contrast with that in adenoid cystic carcinomas of the salivary glands.

Correlation between morbid adenoid and atelectatic ear.

We observed the nasopharynx of 30 patients with atelectatic ears (AE), and 10 with healthy ear drums and mouth breathing by CT scan, to examine the relation between adenoid and otitis media. The adenoids of those with healthy ear drums were of the large posterior type with free space in the pharyngeal fossa, while those with AE were of the large anterior type in 18 patients and of the pendulous projection type over the choana in the other 12. The anatomical location of the adenoids should be considered when one discusses the relation between the adenoid and otitis media. The "Toynbee phenomeno

The occurrence of adenoidal signs and symptoms in normal children.

A characteristic clinical picture has been attributed to enlarged adenoids. In order to investigate this concept the occurrence of certain signs and symptoms was compared in a series of children selected for adenoidectomy and in a series of normal children. Nasal obstruction, snoring and speech defect occurred more frequently in children having adenoidectomy. The symptoms of rhinorrhoea, cough and headache and the signs of mouth breathing and abnormality on anterior rhinoscopy occurred as frequently in normal children as in children having adenoidectomy.
