Increasing Verbal Behavior in a Young Adolescent Girl with Catatonia and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Catatonia is a syndrome characterized as a cluster of difficulties in verbal and motor behavior that interferes with everyday function. This study analyzed the effects of a prompt-fading behavioral treatment package on the verbal behavior of an adolescent girl with autism and catatonia. Data were collected on three verbal responses previously observed in the participant's repertoire, including "Hi," "That sounds great," and "Excuse me." Instructors provided full manual guidance, in conjunction with a verbal model, when needed, to assist the participant in emitting the verbal responses. A funct

Eating behavior and BMI in adolescent survivors of brain tumor and acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

OBJECTIVES: Elevated body mass index (BMI) has been reported in pediatric cancer survivors. It is unclear whether this is related to altered energy intake (via disordered eating), decreased energy expenditure (via limited exercise), or treatment-related direct/indirect changes. The aims of this study are to describe the occurrence of overweight and obesity, exercise frequency, and the extent of disordered eating patterns in this sample of survivors, and to examine relationships among BMI, eating patterns, exercise frequency, and demographic and disease and treatment-related variables to identi

The concept of post-traumatic mood disorder and its implications for adolescent suicidal behavior.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common psychiatric disorder which is frequently comorbid with major depressive disorder (MDD). It has been suggested that some or all individuals diagnosed with comorbid PTSD and MDD have a separate psychobiological condition that can be termed ''post-traumatic mood disorder'' (PTMD). The idea was based on the fact that a significant number of studies suggested that patients suffering from comorbid PTSD and MDD differed clinically and biologically from individuals with PTSD alone or MDD alone. Individuals with comorbid PTSD and MDD are characterized b

Physical activity and sedentary behavior patterns are associated with selected adolescent health risk behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about how physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior, and various adolescent health risk behaviors are associated. The objective of this study was to examine relationships between PA and sedentary behavior patterns and an array of risk behaviors, including leading causes of adolescent morbidity/mortality. METHODS: Nationally representative self-reported data were collected (National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health; wave I: 1994-1995; II: 1996; N = 11957). Previously developed and validated cluster analyses identified 7 homogeneous groups of adolescents shari

Behavior therapy and sibutramine for the treatment of adolescent obesity: a randomized controlled trial.

CONTEXT: Adolescent obesity is becoming a national public health problem. Weight-loss medications including sibutramine facilitate weight control in adults and could be used with obese adolescents in combination with behavior therapy (BT). OBJECTIVE: To examine whether increased weight loss in obese adolescents is induced when sibutramine is added to a family-based, behavioral weight control program. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial consisting of 82 adolescents aged 13 to 17 years with a body mass index (BMI) of 32 to 44 conducted from Mar

A prospective study of psychological distress and sexual risk behavior among black adolescent females.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to examine the association between adolescents' psychological distress and their sexually transmitted disease/human immunodeficiency virus (STD/HIV)-associated sexual behaviors and attitudes. METHOD: Sexually active black adolescent females (N = 522) completed, at baseline and again 6 months later, a self-administered questionnaire that assessed sexual health attitudes and emotional distress symptoms (using standardized measures, alpha =.84), a structured interview that assessed STD/HIV-associated sexual risk behaviors, and a urine screen for pregnancy.

The Effects of Risk Behaviors and Orthorexic Behavior on Glycemic Control in Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescents with chronic disease are as likely to exhibit risk-taking behavior as their peers. The aim was to investigate the risk behaviors of adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and the effect of orthorexic eating behaviors (OEB) on glycemic control (GC). METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 107 adolescents with T1D, aged between 13-18 years and attending high school. The Risk Behavior Scale (RBS) and Orthorexic Behavior Scale (ORTO-11) were administered. A high RBS score indicates risky behavior; a low ORTO-11 score suggests a tendency to OEB. Participants h

The association of early adolescent problem behavior and adult psychopathology: a multivariate behavioral genetic perspective.

Research has documented a strong association between early adolescent problem behavior and adult disinhibitory psychopathology, leading some to suggest that the latter can be reduced by preventing or delaying the former. But the prevention implications of this association necessarily depend upon the causal mechanisms that produce it. The current study was designed to test implications of a model that posits that early problem behavior and disinhibitory psychopathology are associated because they are both manifestations of a common inherited liability. At their age-17 assessment, 1080 twins fro

Covariations of unhealthy weight loss behaviors and other high-risk behaviors among adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: To determine if unhealthy weight loss methods are associated with other health-compromising behaviors among adolescents and to examine covariation patterns across gender and age groups. STUDY DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS: The study sample was drawn from a larger population of 123 132 adolescents in the 6th, 9th, and 12th grades in Minnesota who completed a statewide school-based survey. The index group included all adolescents who used unhealthy weight loss methods (n=4514), and the comparison group comprised a random sample of 4514 adolescents who did not use these methods and who wer

Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors Among US Adolescents: The Cumulative Effects of Polysubstance Use Behaviors.

Background: The linkage between substance use and youth suicidality is less developed due to the predominant focus on certain types of substances (e.g., alcohol consumption, prescription opioid misuse). This study examines polysubstance use and its mutual impact on suicidal thoughts and behaviors among US adolescents. Methods: Data from 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey were utilized. Associations between the concurrent use of five substances (cigarette, e-cigarette, alcohol, marijuana, and prescription opioid) and suicidality (suicidal thoughts, suicide plans, and suicide attempts) were measure

Severity and Frequency of Antisocial Behaviors: Late Adolescence/Young Adulthood Antisocial Behavior Index.

OBJECTIVES: An Antisocial Behavior index (ASB-I) for children (ages 5 to 15) was previously developed by obtaining clinician ratings of the seriousness or severity of various behaviors with the goal of improving assessment of antisocial behaviors (ASB) longitudinally. We extend the instrument for use in late adolescence/young adulthood, as socially unacceptable conduct manifests differently across developmental stages. As in the original study, this extension (the ASB-I YA) is based on independent ratings of ASB seriousness/severity during late adolescence/young adulthood (16 to 28 years) made

Symptoms of Oppositional Behavior In autistic Adolescents and Adolescents Who Have Lost the Autism diagnosis.

This study compared self- and parent-reported symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) in autistic adolescents (n = 34), adolescents who have a history of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) but no longer display symptoms (“loss of autism diagnosis,” LAD; n = 29), and neurotypical (NT; n = 35) adolescents. Participants and their parents completed questionnaires measuring ODD symptomology as part of a larger research study. All participants had age-appropriate cognitive and language abilities, with no group differences. The LAD group had significantly fewer self-reported ODD symptoms compared

Clinical and psychological characteristics of adolescents at risk of mood disorders compared with adolescents with suicidal behavior.

Suicide is one of the leading causes of death among adolescents, yet little is understood about the biopsychosocial factors related to suicidality. The demographic, clinical, and biological characteristics of adolescents with and without psychiatric histories may help inform mechanistic approaches to treatment of mood disorders and suicidality. The 'characterizing the inflammatory profile and suicidal behavior in adolescents' and 'RAD arm of the Texas Resilience Against Depression' studies aimed to characterize the clinical and biological profiles of youth with suicidal behavior and youth at r

School refusal behavior in children and adolescents: a concept analysis.

School refusal behavior (SRB) is increasingly recognized across educational, pediatric, and mental health settings, yet its conceptual boundaries remain unclear, and the term is frequently conflated with school refusal, truancy, school withdrawal, school exclusion, and broader school attendance problems. This study used Walker and Avant's concept analysis method to clarify the meaning, defining attributes, antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents of SRB. PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and PsycINFO were searched for English-language literature published through January 2026, suppleme
