Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a potent hepatotoxin that induces oxidative stress, inflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction. Dipsacoside B (DB), a bioactive triterpenoid saponin from Flos Lonicerae (Shanyinhua), is recognized for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective properties. This study investigates the protective effects of DB against AFB1-induced liver injury and the underlying mechanisms. Male C57BL/6 mice were assigned to control, AFB1, DB, and AFB1 + DB groups, receiving oral treatments for 4 weeks. The results showed that DB significantly alleviated AFB1-induced weight los

Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) in milk poses significant health risks due to its carcinogenicity and resistance to thermal processing. Here, we applied a computer-aided hapten design strategy integrating density functional theory, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics simulations to engineer four AFM1 haptens with tailored spacer arms (C2, C4, C6, and phenyl). A high-affinity monoclonal antibody (10C1, IC50 = 0.015 ng/mL) was generated. Based on this antibody, an icELISA (LOD = 0.0017 ng/mL, meeting EU standards of 0.05 ng/mL) and a gold nanoparticle-based LFIA (LOD = 0.3 ng/mL, meeting China/US/Russ

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is one of the most common mycotoxins, which causes severe hepatic damage and even liver cancer. However, the development of specific tools for AFB1 diagnosis and detoxification remains elusive. Herein, we develop a DNA receptor-loaded gelated cell (DR-GC)-based adsorbent for specifically capturing and detecting AFB1, both in vitro and in vivo. In this system, fragile living cells are transformed into robust GCs using an intracellular hydrogel technique, and then loaded with aptamer-based artificial DNA receptors inside cells via a polymer-assisted strategy. These intracellu

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a highly toxic mycotoxin produced by filamentous fungi of the genus Aspergillus, which frequently colonize crops of major economic and nutritional importance during growth, harvest, and storage. Consequently, AFB1 contamination represents a significant threat to global food safety and security. Following ingestion, AFB1 undergoes hepatic bioactivation by cytochrome P450 enzymes, mainly CYP3A4 and CYP1A2, yielding the highly reactive intermediate aflatoxin B1-8,9-epoxide (AFBO). This electrophilic metabolite forms covalent adducts with proteins and DNA, thereby disrupting

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and T-2 toxin are commonly found in animal feed and stored grain, posing a serious threat to human and animal health. Mycotoxins can penetrate brain tissue by compromising the blood-brain barrier, triggering oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, and leading to oxidative damage and apoptosis of brain cells. The potential neurotoxic mechanisms of AFB1 and T-2 toxin were discussed by summarizing the relevant research reports from the past ten years. AFB1 and T-2 toxin cause neuronal damage in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus, leading to synaptic transmission dysfunction,

Aflatoxins are harmful natural contaminants found in foods and are known to be hepatotoxic. However, recent studies have linked chronic consumption of aflatoxins to nephrotoxicity in both animals and humans. Here, we conducted a systematic review of active compounds, crude extracts, herbal formulations, and probiotics against aflatoxin-induced renal dysfunction, highlighting their mechanisms of action in both in vitro and in vivo studies. The natural products and dietary supplements discussed in this study alleviated aflatoxin-induced renal oxidative stress, inflammation, tissue damage, and ma

While it is well documented that aflatoxin B1 (AFB1); one of the most toxic food contaminants is linked to the development of depression. However, the mechanism on how it affects the gut and brain health leading to depressive-like behavior remains unclear. This study was conducted to determine the effect of AFB1 on the progression of depressive-like behavior. Thirty-two (n = 32) male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly allocated into four groups: control, low-dose (5 μg AFB1/kg), high-dose (25 μg AFB1/kg) and positive control group; exposed on chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS). Gallbladder cancer (GBC) is one of the most common sites for biliary tract cancers. It has a worldwide distribution being endemic in South America and Southern Asia. These high GBC rates have previously been linked to the determinants of health such as nutrition, genetics, lifestyle, and environment. Exposure to aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), a human carcinogen, is suggested to be involved with GBC development. This work aims to analyse the interplay of social, lifestyle, and genetic predisposing factors to GBC. AFB1 plays a pivotal role in carcinogenic onset by genetic and epigenetic modifications. AFB

The presence of mycotoxins in foodstuff causes serious health problems to consumers and economically affects the food industry. Among the mycotoxins, aflatoxins are very toxic and highly carcinogenic contaminants which affect the safety of many foods, and therefore endanger human health. Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1 ) found in milk results from the biotransformation of aflatoxin B1 . Many efforts have been made to control the source of AFM1 from farmers to dairy product companies. However, AFM1 escapes ordinary methods of food treatment such as cooking, sterilization, and freezing, hence it appears in m

Aflatoxins have been considered as one of the major risk factors of male infertility, and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is the most highly toxic and prevalent member of the aflatoxins family. Selenium (Se), an essential nutritional trace mineral for normal testicular development and male fertility, has received extensive intensive on protective effects of male reproductive system due to its potential antioxidant and activating testosterone synthesis. To investigate the protective effect of Se on AFB1-induced testicular toxicity, the mice were orally administered with AFB1 (0.75 mg/kg) and Se (0.2 mg/kg

Aflatoxins are fungal toxins that possess acute life threatening toxicity, carcinogenic properties and other potential chronic adverse effects. Dietary exposure to aflatoxins is considered a major public health concern, especially for subsistence farming communities in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, where dietary staple food crops such as groundnuts and maize are often highly contaminated with aflatoxin due to hot and humid climates and poor storage, together with low awareness of risk and lack of enforcement of regulatory limits. Biomarkers have been developed and applied in many epidemio

The adsorption of a typical biogenic toxin aflatoxin B1 on montmorillonite modified by low-molecular-weight humic acids (M(r) < 3 500) was investigated. The montmorillonite rapidly adsorbed the aflatoxin B1 until amounting to the maximal capacity, and then the adsorbed aflatoxin B1 slowly released into solution and reached the sorption equilibrium state after 12 h. The sorption isotherm of aflatoxin B1 by montmorillonite could be well described by Langmiur model, while the sorption isotherm by humic acid-modified montmorillonite was well fitted by using the Freundlich model. The modification o

The aflatoxins were discovered in toxic peanut meal causing "turkey X" disease, which killed large numbers of turkey poults, ducklings and chicks in the UK in the early 1960s. Extracts of toxic feed induced the symptoms in experimental animals, and purified metabolites with properties identical to aflatoxins B(1) and G(1) (AFB(1) and AFG(1)) were isolated from Aspergillus flavus cultures. Structure elucidation of aflatoxin B(1) was accomplished and confirmed by total synthesis in 1963. AFB(1) is a potent liver carcinogen in rodents, non-human primates, fish and birds, operating through a genot

Chemoprevention of toxicoses and/or cancer through the use of nutrients or pharmacologic compounds is the subject of intense study. Among the many compounds examined, food additives such as antioxidants are being considered due to their ability to reduce disease formation by either induction or inhibition of key enzyme systems. One such compound, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), has been found to protect against cancer formation caused by exposure to aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in rodents. We have shown that dietary BHT protects against clinical signs of aflatoxicosis in turkeys, a species that is very

Infestation of corn (Zea mays) by corn earworm (Helicoverpa zea) predisposes the plant to infection by Aspergillus fungi and concomitant contamination with the carcinogenic mycotoxin aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). Although effects of ingesting AFB1 are well documented in livestock and humans, the effects on insects that naturally encounter this mycotoxin are not as well defined. Toxicity of AFB1 to different stages of H. zea (first, third, and fifth instars) was evaluated with artificial diets containing varying concentrations. Although not acutely toxic at low concentrations (1-20 ng/g), AFB1 had signi

Sodium bentonite (SB) was evaluated for its ability to reduce the deleterious effects of fumonisin B1 (FB1) and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in broiler diets. It was incorporated into the diets (0.3%) containing 2.5 mg/kg AFB1, 200 mg/kg FB1, or a combination of 2.5 mg/kg AFB1 and 200 mg/kg FB1. Aflatoxin B1 significantly diminished body weight gain, whereas FB1 or the combination of FB1 and SB had no effect. Addition of SB in the diets significantly diminished the inhibitory effects of dietary AFB1. Feeding AFB1 alone caused significant increases in the relative weights of most observed organs. Feedin

Aflatoxin B1 is a mycotoxin produced by Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticum, which may be present as a food contaminant. It is known to cause acute toxic effects and act as a carcinogenic agent. The carcinogenic action has been related to its ability to form unstable adducts with DNA, which represent possible mutagenic sites. On the other hand, the primary cellular target responsible for its toxic action has not yet been clearly identified. Previous data suggested a possible correlation between cell proliferation and responsiveness to aflatoxin toxicity. These observations led us to

Aflatoxin-albumin adducts in peripheral blood provide a measure of exposure to aflatoxin over the previous 2-3 months. In the present study, the levels of these adducts were determined in a group of individuals from The Gambia, West Africa and were compared in a cross-sectional study to the levels of various cytogenetic alterations (chromosomal aberrations, micronuclei, sister chromatid exchanges) in the same individuals to test whether an increase in genetic damage is associated with an increased exposure in this population. Of 35 subjects tested for aflatoxin-albumin adducts, all but 3 were
