Antimicrobial Resistance, Virulence Gene Profiling, and Spa Typing of Staphylococcus aureus Isolated from Retail Chicken Meat in Alabama, USA.

Antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) in retail meat poses a public health threat requiring continuous surveillance. This study investigated the frequency of isolation, toxin genes, and antibiotic resistance profile of S. aureus recovered from retail poultry meat samples and presented results beneficial to public health interventions. Of 200 samples collected, 16% (32/200) tested positive for S. aureus, and these were recovered from thigh 37.5% (12/32), wing 34.4% (11/32), gizzard (15.6% (5/32), and liver 12.5% (4/32) samples. Findings of spa typing analysis revealed that 68.8

Functionally validated imaging endpoints in the Alabama study on early age-related macular degeneration 2 (ALSTAR2): design and methods.

BACKGROUND: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of irreversible vision impairment in the United States and globally, is a disease of the photoreceptor support system involving the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), Bruch's membrane, and the choriocapillaris in the setting of characteristic extracellular deposits between outer retinal cells and their blood supply. Research has clearly documented the selective vulnerability of rod photoreceptors and rod-mediated (scotopic) vision in early AMD, including delayed rod-mediated dark adaptation (RMDA) and impaired rod-mediated ligh

Adapting an Intervention to Improve Adolescent Sexual Health Assessment and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Prescription by Family Medicine Physicians in Alabama.

High HIV incidence in the US South disproportionately affects adolescents, young adults, and Black women. Using a community-engaged approach and intervention mapping, we developed PrEP-Pro, an intervention to support family medicine physician-trainees to elicit a sexual history from and provide pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to adolescents, with special emphasis on engaging with Black adolescent girls and young women (AGYW). Intervention content includes PrEP curricula, adaptations to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s sexual history tool, and a PrEP Champion training prog

Cold stress, heart failure, and esophageal occlusion cause the death of a West Indian manatee Trichechus manatus in Alabama, USA.

Cold stress is the leading cause of mortality in West Indian manatees Trichechus manatus in the northcentral Gulf of Mexico. This report describes an adult male manatee that stranded alive with signs of cold stress in Alabama (USA) waters in January 2022 and died during the rescue intervention. Postmortem examination and histopathologic review revealed multiple contributors to death. While the animal had evidence of cold stress syndrome, there was aortic stenosis and concentric left ventricular hypertrophy as well as an esophageal foreign body (plastic bag). Main findings from blood analysis i

Exuviotrophic apostome ciliates from freshwater decapods in southern Alabama (USA) and a description of Hyalophysa clampi n. sp. (Ciliophora, Apostomatida).

Apostome ciliates from crayfish and freshwater shrimp in southern and central Alabama were surveyed in this study. Hyalophysa bradburyae was found on both crayfish and shrimp from 16 sites in eight drainages. A new species, Hyalophysa clampi n. sp., was found infesting crayfish at one site and simultaneously infesting crayfish with H. bradburyae at two sites. Characteristics of the trophont ciliature of H. clampi n. sp. separate it from other species in the genus. Particularly, the contractile vacuole pore is oriented posterior to the ventral kineties xyz, kineties 1 and 2 are undivided, an ap

Predictors of shingles reports at diagnosis of common variable immunodeficiency and selective immunoglobulin G subclass deficiency in 212 Alabama adults.

We sought to determine predictors of shingles reports in adults with common variable immunodeficiency or immunoglobulin (Ig) G subclass deficiency (CVID/IgGSD). We tabulated observations at diagnosis of CVID/IgGSD in 212 white adult index patients (165 women, 47 men) who responded to a question about having had shingles. None had been vaccinated for herpes zoster. We analyzed age, sex, and shingles reports; blood levels of CD19+, CD4+, CD8+, and CD56+ mononuclear cells; serum levels of IgG subclasses, IgA, and IgM; and positivity for human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-A and -B haplotypes. Trends in Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Among Clients of The Exchange Center for Child Abuse Prevention in Alabama's Wiregrass Region.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are stressful or traumatic events like physical or sexual abuse experienced before the age of 18. ACEs are a national health crisis, with many children in the United States (US) experiencing at least one adverse childhood event. High ACE scores (3+ of 11 categories) are correlated with poor preventable physical and mental health outcomes. Given the unique challenges faced by rural communities, understanding how ACEs uniquely impact rural populations and their health outcomes is imperative to population-specific interventions. The Exchange Center for Child A

Racial differences in levels of serum lipids and effects of exposure to persistent organic pollutants on lipid levels in residents of Anniston, Alabama.

Serum lipid levels are major risk factors for cardiovascular disease. In addition to diet, exercise, genetics, age and race, serum concentrations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) influence concentrations of serum lipids. We investigated associations between fasting concentrations of 35 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners and nine organochlorine pesticides in relation to total serum lipids, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and triglycerides in 525 Caucasian and African American residents of Anniston, Alabama, wh

Understanding and improving health education among first-time parents of infants with sickle cell anemia in Alabama: a mixed methods approach.

With the increase in access to medical information, parents can acquire health information from multiple sources. An understanding of parents' reactions to a newborn infant's diagnosis of sickle cell anemia and how they acquire knowledge can identify parent beliefs and preferences about the process of sickle cell education. This study utilized a sequential exploratory mixed methods design. First, qualitative interviews were conducted with 8 parents of infants with sickle cell anemia to understand the process of health education. Second, quantitative surveys were conducted with 22 other parents
