To examine American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) adults' attitudes and beliefs on research and clinical trial participation, we administered surveys at four AI/AN cultural events in Seattle, WA and Denver, CO, between 2022 and 2024. Surveys assessed familiarity with, attitudes towards, and beliefs about clinical trials, as well as health behaviors, research participation, and demographic characteristics. A total of 1287 AI/AN adults completed surveys. We performed logistic regression to examine the association between each attitude or belief and willingness to participate in clinical trials. O

OBJECTIVE: Culture may influence attitudes toward alcohol intervention strategies among American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) individuals. This study examined AI/AN college students' attitudes regarding harm-reduction (HR) and abstinence-only (AO) intervention strategies to overcome problems with alcohol, including perceived social support for using these strategies.
METHOD: Participants were AI/AN college students who consumed alcohol (N = 159) and completed a single in-person data collection session. Separate analyses of covariance were conducted to examine perceived effectiveness and self-

Suicide is a significant public health problem in the United States and disproportionally affects male American Indian/Alaska Natives (AI/AN). Suicide is particularly problematic among AI/AN firefighters who are more likely to report suicide ideation, planning, attempts, and risk compared to non-Hispanic white (NHW) firefighters. The aim of the current study was to compare non-Hispanic AI/AN firefighter and NHW firefighter suicide decedents by demographics and risk/precipitating factors using National Violent Death Reporting System data for 45 male non-Hispanic AI/AN firefighter and 588 male N

BACKGROUND: In 2014, a federal rule reduced occupational exposure limits to coal mine dust and expanded medical surveillance eligibility beyond underground miners to surface and contract coal miners. This expansion may have provided an opportunity for more American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) coal miners to participate in screening, since many surface coal mines are located near AI/AN communities and may employ AI/AN miners. Therefore we sought to better understand the respiratory health of AI/AN coal miners by characterizing prevalence of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP), progressive m

BACKGROUND: American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) youth face multiple health challenges compared to other racial/ethnic groups, which could potentially be ameliorated by the dissemination of evidence-based adolescent health promotion programs. Previous studies have indicated that limited trained personnel, cultural barriers, and geographic isolation may hinder the reach and implementation of evidence-based health promotion programs among AI/AN youth. Although Internet access is variable in AI/AN communities across the United States, it is swiftly and steadily improving, and it may provide

American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/AN) exhibit high levels of alcohol and drug (AOD) use and problems. Although approximately 70% of AI/ANs reside in urban areas, few culturally relevant AOD use programs targeting urban AI/AN youth exist. Furthermore, federally-funded studies focused on the integration of evidence-based treatments with AI/AN traditional practices are limited. The current study addresses a critical gap in the delivery of culturally appropriate AOD use programs for urban AI/AN youth, and outlines the development of a culturally tailored AOD program for urban AI/AN youth called

Streptococcus pneumoniae causes a significant amount of illness and death from pneumonia, bacteremia and meningitis among children < 2 years of age. No currently available effective vaccine exists to prevent pneumococcal disease in this age group. To identify modifiable risk factors we conducted a retrospective case-control study of 29 Alaska Native residents of Bethel, AK, < 2 years of age who had invasive pneumococcal illness from 1983 to 1992 and 85 controls matched for race, city of residence and date of birth. Data were collected through reviews of medical records and telephone interviews

BACKGROUND: American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) youth experience serious disparities in sexual and reproductive health, including the highest teen birth rate among racial/ethnic groups, and disproportionate rates of sexually transmitted infections (STI), including HIV. A growing number of evidence-based programs (EBPs) that integrate the strengths and cultural teachings of Native communities exist. Yet, multiple factors, including lack of trained personnel, limited resources, and geographic isolation, may hinder their adoption and implementation. Innovative implementation strategies that

Introduction The United States continues to see rising rates of maternal mortality (MM) and severe maternal morbidity (SMM), with American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) individuals facing particularly high risk. Arizona shows marked maternal health disparities, yet localized data on AI/AN maternal health remains limited. This study set out to examine trends in SMM among AI/AN birthing individuals in the East Valley of Arizona. By focusing on hospital-level data, the study aimed to address critical gaps in region-specific AI/AN maternal health data that are often underrepresented in statewid

PURPOSE: This study aimed to characterize the gastric cancer burden among non-Hispanic American Indian Alaska Native (NHAIAN) and White (NHW) individuals in North Carolina to provide a baseline assessment of the gastric cancer burden in North Carolina.
METHODS: Data from the North Carolina Central Cancer Registry (2003-2021) were used to construct gastric cancer diagnosis (NHAIAN n = 111; NHW n = 7,685) and treatment (NHAIAN n = 97; NHW n = 6,040) cohorts. Race-stratified patient characteristics were summarized. We evaluated unadjusted associations between patient characteristics and receipt

BACKGROUND: The United States (US) declared drug overdose a public health emergency in 2017. Despite this, two million people reported having an opioid use disorder (OUD) in 2018. However, following the beginning of COVID-19 there was a 53% increase in overdose deaths, with American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) individuals experiencing the highest rates of all racial groups. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and OUD treatment access challenges, OUD treatment policies were changed to improving access to care.
PURPOSE: This review examines how the state- and federal-level policies impacted a

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a leading cause of premature mortality worldwide and a major public health concern among adolescents and young adults. In the United States, American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations have the highest suicide rates of any racial or ethnic group, with suicide among the leading causes of death in AI/AN youth. Suicide attempts are a clinically significant outcome and a strong predictor of subsequent suicide death. To our knowledge, no prior systematic review has simultaneously focused on AI/AN adolescents and young adults while examining risk factors, suicide att

INTRODUCTION: American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities experienced a disproportionate burden of COVID-19, including among the highest rates of infection, hospitalization, and mortality in the United States. The pandemic also introduced widespread stressors, and elevated perceived stress is itself a risk factor for adverse physical and mental health outcomes. Little is known about whether COVID-19 infection is associated with perceived stress among AI/AN peoples. We examined the association between self-reported COVID-19 infection and perceived stress among urban AI/AN adults.

INTRODUCTION: Compared to non-Indigenous communities, American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) people are inequitably impacted by HIV, yet few data are available on barriers to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use in this population. This study sought to examine PrEP knowledge, attitudes, and perceived barriers to use among AI/AN people in the United States.
METHODS: A cross-sectional, online survey was administered from January-May 2023 to respondents ≥ 16 years of age who identified as AI/AN. The survey assessed sociodemographic characteristics, PrEP knowledge, attitudes towards PrEP, and exper

American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities are disproportionately affected by the opioid epidemic. AI/AN emerging adults (ages 18-25) in urban areas are at particularly high risk, with the overdose death rate among urban-dwelling AI/AN people 1.4 times higher than rural-dwelling AI/AN people. Despite these challenges, there are no evidence-based culturally tailored prevention or intervention programs to address opioid, alcohol and other drug use among urban AI/AN emerging adults. This study focused on understanding AI/AN emerging adults' experiences with two culturally tailored programs

Background: The disproportionately high prevalence of poor reproductive and sexual health outcomes among American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) women is related to histories of colonization, oppression, and structural racism. Intimate partner violence (IPV) and sexual violence (SV) contribute to these health outcomes. Materials and Methods: Narrative interviews were conducted with AI/AN women from four tribal reservation communities. Interviews explored connections among sexual and reproductive health, IPV, SV, reproductive coercion (RC), and pregnancy experiences as well as women's experie

PURPOSE: Research on American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) mental health disparities is based largely on either tribal populations or national samples of adults that do not account for multiracial AIANs, even though over 40% of AIANs identify with multiple racial groups. The present investigation extends this research by assessing mental health status in a national sample of multiracial AIAN adults relative to adults who identify exclusively as either AIAN or White.
METHODS: 2012 BRFSS data were used to conduct multinomial logistic regression analyses comparing mental health outcomes among

This study examined associations between alcohol misuse and childhood maltreatment and out-of-home placement among urban lesbian, gay, and bisexual (referred to as two-spirit) American Indian and Alaska Native adults. In a multi-site study, data were obtained from 294 individuals who consumed alcohol during the past year. The results indicated that 72.3% of men and 62.4% of women engaged in hazardous and harmful alcohol use and 50.8% of men and 48.7% of women met criteria for past-year alcohol dependence. The most common types of childhood maltreatment were physical abuse among male drinkers (
