Rumination as a predictor of drinking behaviour in alcohol abusers: a prospective study.

AIMS: To investigate the role of depression and rumination in predicting drinking status (absence or presence of alcohol use) and level of alcohol use at 3, 6 and 12 months following a brief course of cognitive-behavioural therapy for alcohol abuse. METHODS: A total of 80 out-patients with a diagnosis of alcohol abuse completed measures of depression (Beck Depression Inventory), rumination (Ruminative Responses Scale) and alcohol use (Quantity-Frequency Scale). RESULTS: These indicated that rumination predicted drinking status and level of alcohol use at 3-, 6- and 12-month follow-up. The co

[Drinking and domestic violence: findings from clinical survey of alcoholics].

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the domestic violence in the families of alcoholics. We examined the actual state of domestic violence in alcoholics' families and compared this whith a national representative sample. The results are as follows: (1) Domestic violence in families of alcoholics is serious. (2) In such families, 63.5% of wives had been injured as a result of physical violence by the husband. (3) In 86.6% of such incidents, the husband or the woman herself had been drinking. (4) Physical, social and economical violence leads to the breakdown of marital relationships. (5) Af

Diagnosis of depression in alcohol dependence: changes in prevalence with drinking status.

BACKGROUND: Depression and alcohol dependence are frequently found to co-exist but the relationship between these disorders requires further elucidation. This study tested several hypotheses related to the relevance of whether the diagnosis of depression was made before admission or after detoxification in the current episode for those with alcohol dependence. METHOD: The Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia (SADS) was administered to obtain Research Diagnostic Criteria (RDC) on 82 randomly selected alcohol dependent in-patients. Alcohol-related (Severity of Alcohol Dependence Q

Functional remodeling of the parasubthalamic nucleus drives alcohol drinking escalation in dependence.

The neurocircuitry changes mediating the development and maintenance of an alcohol use disorder are complex and dynamic. The parasubthalamic nucleus (PSTN), a small nucleus of the posterior lateral hypothalamus best known for suppressing appetite, is interconnected with brain regions disrupted in addiction; yet its potential role in the regulation of alcohol consumption had never been examined. Here we show that the PSTN exerts potent control over alcohol drinking in mice. Remarkably, the influence of endogenous PSTN activity on voluntary alcohol consumption switches from inhibitory to stimula

Alcohol-Induced Blackouts and Subsequent Drinking Trajectories: Evidence From Three Longitudinal Samples.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-induced blackouts are widely recognized as markers of acute intoxication and elevated risk for alcohol-related harm. Blackout experiences may also represent psychologically salient events capable of influencing subsequent drinking behavior. The present study examined whether recent blackout predicts changes in alcohol use, alcohol-related consequences, and blackouts over time. METHOD: Data were drawn from three independent longitudinal samples of college student drinkers (Ns = 568, 484, and 200). Generalized linear mixed models with negative binomial distributions were use

Associations among alcohol sensitivity, acquired tolerance, and drinking outcomes in late adolescence.

Alcohol tolerance is a core diagnostic feature of alcohol use disorder, yet little research has investigated its role in risky drinking during late adolescence. Low sensitivity to alcohol sedation is also linked to alcohol use disorder risk, but few studies have examined how acquired tolerance and alcohol sensitivity concurrently relate to heavy drinking. This study examined the concurrent and prospective associations of acquired tolerance and alcohol sensitivity with heavy drinking among late adolescent heavy drinkers (N = 308, ages 18-21, 52.6% female). At baseline, participants completed se

Exploring associations between drinking contexts and alcohol consumption: An analysis of photographs.

Drinking contexts are theorized to represent a core factor driving hazardous consumption and ultimately susceptibility to alcohol use disorder. Yet capturing and characterizing contextual influences on alcohol consumption has posed a significant challenge. In this study, we employ objective ambulatory assessment methods to test a multiaxial framework for understanding contextual influences on drinking. Specifically, we propose a novel SPAIS framework, comprising five exogenous, objectively measurable domains of drinking context (schedule/time, physical, activity, interpersonal, and substance/d

ADHD Symptomatology is Associated with Alcohol Use and Consequences via Drinking Norms.

Background: Research suggests individuals with ADHD are at risk for alcohol use and related problems and are more susceptible to peer influence. Although previous research has focused on the relationship between alcohol use, related problems, and ADHD symptomatology, scant research has examined whether descriptive drinking norms (i.e., perception of others quantity of drinking) and level of alcohol use mediate this association. Objectives: Consequently, the current study tested a sequential mediation model to examine whether ADHD symptoms were associated with alcohol-related problems via drink

Self-Determined Motivation for Alcohol Use and Drinking Frequency, Intensity, and Consequences.

Objective: Drinking motives predict drinking behaviors and outcomes among adults. Drinking motives are rarely studied using self-determination theory (SDT), which aligns with harm-reduction approaches to alcohol use, but SDT can offer a complementary theoretical framework to existing drinking motives frameworks that may help explain the observed heterogeneity in drinking motives and account for more variance in drinking outcomes. This study examined the associations between five SDT-based drinking motives with drinking frequency, intensity, and consequences. Method: A total number of 630 adult

Fetus morphology changes by second-trimester ultrasound in pregnant women drinking alcohol.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) are a group of negative conditions occurring in children exposed to alcohol during gestation. The early discovery of FASD is crucial for mother and infant follow-ups. In this study, we investigated in pregnant women the association between urine ethylglucuronide (EtG-a biomarker of alcohol drinking) and indicators of the physical characteristics of FASD by prenatal ultrasound in the second trimester of gestation. We also correlated these data with the AUDIT-C, T-ACE/TACER-3, TWEAK, and food habit diary, screening questionnaires used to disclose alcohol

Predicting Alcohol Misuse Among Australian 19-Year-Olds from Adolescent Drinking Trajectories.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use in adolescence predicts future alcohol misuse. However, the extent to which different patterns of adolescent use present risk remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated how adolescent trajectories of alcohol consumption during the school years predict alcohol misuse at age 19 years. METHODS: Data were drawn from 707 students from Victoria, Australia, longitudinally followed for 7 years. Five alcohol use trajectories were identified based on the frequency of alcohol use from Grade 6 (age 12 years) to Grade 11 (age 17 years). At age 19 years, participants comp

Hypothalamic-specific proopiomelanocortin deficiency reduces alcohol drinking in male and female mice.

Opioid receptor antagonist naltrexone reduces alcohol consumption and relapse in both humans and rodents. This study investigated whether hypothalamic proopiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons (producing beta-endorphin and melanocortins) play a role in alcohol drinking behaviors. Both male and female mice with targeted deletion of two neuronal Pomc enhancers nPE1 and nPE2 (nPE-/-), resulting in hypothalamic-specific POMC deficiency, were studied in short-access (4-h/day) drinking-in-the-dark (DID, alcohol in one bottle, intermittent access (IA, 24-h cycles of alcohol access every other day, alcohol v

Alcohol drinking and gastric cancer risk: a meta-analysis of observational studies.

BACKGROUND: Many studies investigated the association between alcohol drinking and gastric cancer risk, but the results were controversial. We performed a meta-analysis of observational studies to explore the association. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We searched PubMed to identify the relevant studies that reported the association between alcohol drinking and gastric cancer risk up to December 31, 2016. We pooled relative risks (RRs) in random effects model and performed dose-response analysis to quantify the association. Cochran Q test and I2 analyses were used to evaluate the heterogeneity. Meta-

Hangover sensitivity after controlled alcohol administration as predictor of post-college drinking.

Predicting continued problematic levels of drinking after the early 20's could help with early identification of persons at risk. This study investigated whether hangover insensitivity could predict postcollege drinking and problems beyond the variance due to drinking patterns. In a preliminary study, 134 college seniors from a laboratory study of hangover (Time 1) were contacted and assessed 1-4 years (M = 2.3) later (Time 2). Hangover severity was studied after controlled alcohol administration to a specific dose while controlling sleep and environmental influences. Hangover severity at Time

AKT signaling pathway in the nucleus accumbens mediates excessive alcohol drinking behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Neuroadaptations within the nucleus accumbens (NAc) have been implicated in molecular mechanisms underlying the development and/or maintenance of alcohol abuse disorders. We recently reported that the activation of mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) signaling pathway in the NAc of rodents, after exposure to alcohol, contributes to alcohol drinking behaviors. The kinase AKT is a main upstream activator of the mTORC1 pathway. We therefore hypothesized that the activation of AKT in the NAc in response to alcohol exposure plays an important role in mechanisms that underli

Characterizing binge drinking among U.S. military Veterans receiving a brief alcohol intervention.

BACKGROUND: Brief web-based alcohol interventions (BAIs) are effective for reducing binge drinking in college students and civilian adults, and are increasingly being applied to U.S. military populations. However, little is known about factors associated with binge drinking in Veteran populations and therefore some concern remains on the generalizability of studies supporting BAIs for addressing binge drinking in this population. This study sought to better understand the characteristics (e.g., demographic, coping related mental health factors, prior exposure to traumatic events, and factors a
