Influence of acute alcohol intoxication on the outcome of severe non-neurologic trauma.

The influence of acute alcohol intoxication on the outcome of severe non-neurologic trauma was investigated in a prospective study. Alcohol was found in the blood in 35 of the 69 patients, with mean level 136 +/- 13 mg/100 ml. The patients were admitted to hospital 29.5 +/- 2 min after the injury and had mean ISS 25 +/- 2. In the patients with alcohol in the blood, the blood pressure and PCO2 on arrival were lower than in the other patients. When the alcohol level exceeded 100 mg/100 ml, the blood pressure and PCO2 were lower than in the sober patients despite significantly shorter time betwee

Acute alcohol intoxication, negative affect, and autonomic arousal in women and men.

The present study tested the hypothesis that acute moderate alcohol intoxication is associated with reductions in experimentally-induced negative affect among 64 moderately drinking adult women and men. The effort incorporated a balanced placebo design, multiple measures of affective responses including cardiovascular and electrodermal activity, and control for phase of the sexual cycle among nonoral contraceptive women. Negative effect and psychophysiological responses to intoxication following stress manipulation were a complex function of beverage, expectancy, and gender. Expectation of a m

[Concentrations of protein sulfhydryl and amino groups in the brain during acute and chronic alcoholic intoxication].

The content of sulphydryl and amine groups in water- and salt- soluble proteins of different areas of the rat brain was studied as affected by acute and chronic alcohol intoxication. With a relatively unchanged content of sulphydryl groups, noticeable variations are observed in the level of amine groups, most pronounced in proteins of the intermediate and middle areas of the brain. Under chronic intoxication the greatest changes in the content of the functional groups occur on the fourth day after cessation of the alcohol administration, when changes in the clinical state of the animals are mo

[Clinical Practice Guide for Early Detection, Diagnosis and Treatment of the Acute Intoxication Phase in Patients with Alcohol Abuse or Dependence: Part II: Evaluation and Management of Patients with Acute Alcohol Intoxication].

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, alcohol is the second most-used psychotropic substance and the third risk factor for early death and disability. Its noxious use is a world public health problem given its personal, labor, family, economic and social impact. The identification of acute alcohol intoxication is extremely important, as well as the alcohol withdrawal syndrome and its complications, such as delirium tremens and Wernicke's encephalopathy in order to grant a timely treatment for those patients. This article introduces the evidence found so as to face and treat these clinic manifestations. ME

Alcohol Intoxication Reduces Systemic Interleukin-6 Levels and Leukocyte Counts After Severe TBI Compared With Not Intoxicated TBI Patients.

BACKGROUND: The effect of alcohol consumption on inflammatory state and outcome in brain-injured patients remains controversial. We analyzed the influence of positive blood alcohol concentration (BAC) on inflammatory changes, inhospital complications, and mortality in traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with an Injury Severity Score (ISS) at least 16 and Abbreviated Injury Scale of head (AIS-head) at least 3 were included upon arrival in the emergency room and grouped according to positive BAC (>0.5‰, BAC) vs. less than 0.5‰ alcohol (no BAC). Injury severity,

Comparing subjective effects and intoxication on simultaneous alcohol and cannabis use occasions relative to alcohol- or cannabis-only occasions.

BACKGROUND: Simultaneous use of alcohol and cannabis-or use of both substances so effects overlap-is common among college-attending young adults and can heighten one's likelihood of experiencing substance-related harms in daily life. Limited ecological momentary assessment and daily diary work have examined the role of subjective intoxication and subjective effects when engaging in simultaneous relative to alcohol- or cannabis-only use, and studies have yielded mixed results. As such, subjective experiences serve as important internal cues for decision making; this study aimed to examine the l

Alcohol and emotion: Analyzing convergence between facially expressed and self-reported indices of emotion under alcohol intoxication.

OBJECTIVE: Emotion measurement is central to capturing acute alcohol reinforcement and so to informing models of alcohol use disorder etiology. Yet our understanding of how alcohol impacts emotion as assessed across diverse response modalities remains incomplete. The present study leverages a social alcohol-administration paradigm to assess drinking-related emotions, aiming to elucidate impacts of intoxication on self-reported versus behaviorally expressed emotion. METHOD: Participants (N = 60; Mage = 22.5; 50% male; 55% White) attended two counterbalanced laboratory sessions, on one of which

Protective Effect of Polycephalomyces nipponicus (Ascomycota) Against Alcohol-Induced Liver Injury and Alcohol Intoxication in ICR Mice.

Polycephalomyces nipponicus, a traditional East Asian medicinal fungus, is recognized for its anticancer and antimicrobial properties, but its protective effects against alcohol-induced liver injury are less understood. This study investigated the activity of P. nipponicus strain MK1201 on motor coordination, alcohol metabolism, and hepatoprotection in mice after 14 d of ethanol exposure. Mice were assigned to five groups with nine treatments: (I) normal control (treatment 1), (II) ethanol administration (2 or 6 g/kg; treatments 2 and 3), (III) P. nipponicus (PN) extract alone (200 or 600 mg/k

Clinical and forensic evaluation of 66 cases of alcohol intoxication: Insights into substitute alcohols detected by HS-GC/MS.

Rising global alcohol consumption is a major public health and safety concern. Over the last decade, undeclared alcohol consumption has increasingly come into focus due to high inflation that has led many individuals to resort to unhealthy methods to access alcohol. In this context, the development of methods for alcohol detection in biological samples is of great importance in terms of rapid diagnosis, effective treatment, and obtaining reliable evidence in forensic processes. In this study, an HS-GC/MS method for the evaluation of alcohol intoxication in blood samples was developed and valid

Self-reported subjective perception of intoxication reflects family history of alcoholism when breath alcohol levels are constant.

BACKGROUND: The premise of this study is that the increased familial risk for alcoholism is associated with genetic determinants of the response to alcohol, characterized by sensitivity and adaptation. Following a single administration, sensitivity is the initial response to alcohol, expressed as the change in dependent measures from baseline. Adaptation of dependent measures within a single exposure to alcohol can be expressed as acute tolerance (recovery of dependent measures toward baseline values) or sensitization (movement of dependent measure further away from baseline values). This stud

Determination of beta-endorphin in alcoholic patients in the acute stage of intoxication: relation with naloxone therapy.

beta-Endorphin was measured in the plasma of control subjects and 12 chronic alcoholics in the acute stage of ethanol intoxication. Naloxone was administered and the level of beta-endorphin was compared before and after treatment. The increased level of beta-endorphin in the intoxicated subjects supports the presence of ethanol interactions with the opioid system, since pituitary secretion does not seem to be involved. Furthermore, the coexistence of high levels of beta-endorphin and an effective naloxone response suggest a possible link between the two.

[Acute and chronic alcoholic intoxication as a cause of modified immunological reactivity in patients with generalized peritonitis].

The importance of assessment of immunological reactivity in patients with generalized peritonitis suffering alcoholic intoxication ensues from the possibility to use it for the prediction of abdominal inflammation dynamics and thereby for the optimization of organ-protective therapy in critical situations.

Silk Nanococoons: Bio-Nanoreactors for Enzymatic Catalytic Reactions and Applications to Alcohol Intoxication.

Enzymatic reactions are often terminated by severe aqueous environments. Inspired by bio-protection of silk cocoons, a system of silk fibroin (SF) nanococoons is developed, which is capable of providing a bio-protective environment for enzymatic activities on one hand, and facilitating the process of cascade enzymatic reactions on the other hand. This gives rise to the significant enhancement in enzymatic stability and efficacy. For instance, the protected glucose oxidase and horseradish peroxidase enzymes exhibit a 17.5- and 7.0-fold increase when stored at 60 °C (>50% activity; ≈28 h) and 25

Medical needs of emergency department patients presenting with acute alcohol and drug intoxication.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Some contend that patients with acute alcohol or illicit substance intoxication should be treated in outpatient detoxification centers rather than in the ED. However, these patients often have underlying acute medical needs. We sought to determine the frequency of medical interventions required by ED patients with alcohol or illicit substance intoxication. METHODS: This was a prospective observational study of consecutive ED patients presenting to an urban tertiary care ED with altered mental status due to alcohol or illicit substance use. We performed data collection for pat
