Associations Among Minority Stress, Allostatic Load, and Drug and Alcohol Use in Sexual Minorities: Protocol for the Queer Health Study-a Longitudinal Feasibility Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Substance use rates among sexual minorities are disproportionately greater than that of their heterosexual counterparts. Minority stress theory posits that one explanation for disproportionate substance use in sexual minority populations is a result of increased social stress associated with holding a minoritized identity. This minority stress has been linked to a myriad of negative mental health outcomes, including alcohol and drug use. In addition, emerging research has begun to demonstrate links between minority stress and stress physiology dysregulation. While animal and human

Emotional and instrumental support during childhood and biological dysregulation in midlife.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether greater emotional and instrumental support during childhood is associated with less dysregulation across multiple physiological systems in midlife. METHODS: Data are from participants in the second wave of the Midlife in the United States study (2004-2005) who participated in a clinic-based assessment of health status. Emotional and instrumental support was measured using a seven-item scale (α=0.89) based on participant retrospective self-report. Biological dysregulation was assessed using an allostatic load (AL) score constructed from 24 measures across seven

Association between allostatic load and thyroid function in U.S. adults: a cross-sectional study based on NHANES data.

Chronic stress may contribute to endocrine dysregulation. The allostatic load (AL), an indicator of cumulative physiological burden across multiple systems, has unclear associations with thyroid function. We analyzed 5525 adults (2678 men and 2847 women) from NHANES 2007-2010. The participants were categorized into allostatic load score (ALS) quartiles: Q1 (n = 2582), Q2 (n = 1394), Q3 (n = 1003), and Q4 (n = 546). The ALS was constructed from eight cardiovascular, metabolic, and inflammatory biomarkers. Thyroid function was assessed (TSH, FT3, FT4, TgAb, and TPOAb) and categorized as thyroid

A conceptual framework for the intersection of hyperalgesia and hyperkatifeia in alcohol addiction.

Alcohol use disorder is a chronically relapsing disorder that is characterized by compulsive drug seeking and is hypothesized to result from multiple sources of motivational dysregulation in a three-stage cycle of addiction (incentive salience/pathological habits, withdrawal/negative affect, and preoccupation/anticipation). One major source of motivation in the withdrawal/negative affect stage is the physical pain and emotional pain of withdrawal and protracted withdrawal that drive pronounced drug-seeking behavior via the process of negative reinforcement. The construct of negative reinforcem

Vulnerability to chronic stress and the phenotypic heterogeneity of presbycusis with subjective tinnitus.

Age-related functional reserve decline and vulnerability of multiple physiological systems and organs, as well as at the cellular and molecular levels, result in different frailty phenotypes, such as physical, cognitive, and psychosocial frailty, and multiple comorbidities, including age-related hearing loss (ARHL) and/or tinnitus due to the decline in auditory reserve. However, the contributions of chronic non-audiogenic cumulative exposure, and chronic audiogenic stress to phenotypic heterogeneity of presbycusis and/or tinnitus remain elusive. Because of the cumulative environmental stressor

The role of glucocorticoids in aging and age-related pharmacotherapy.

Recently we have evaluated the role of glucocorticoids (GC) and other stress hormones in the pathogeny of age-related diseases. In order to perform this evaluation, we considered the DOHaD paradigm discussing long-term effects of adverse perinatal factors. In the present work, a part of the data collected previously was used for analyzing the role of GC in aging, as well as in age-related pharmacotherapy. The data were gathered in various databases, preferably in English, during the last 25-30 years. Although some authors suggest that GC can be considered as hormones of aging, the majority of

Association Between Allostatic Load, Genetic Susceptibility, and Liver Cancer Incidence: A Large-Scale Prospective Cohort Study.

Allostatic load (AL) reflects the cumulative physiological burden of chronic stress throughout life, potentially influencing cancer onset and prognosis. However, its association with primary liver cancer (PLC) risk and potential interaction with genetic susceptibility remains unclear. To investigate this, we analyzed 374,632 UK Biobank participants. AL was evaluated using a composite score of 13 cardiovascular, metabolic, and immune biomarkers, while a weighted polygenic risk score (PRS) categorized genetic susceptibility. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards models and restricted cubic spli

Allostatic Load, Educational Attainment, and Risk of Cancer Mortality Among US Men.

IMPORTANCE: Health disparities among racial and ethnic minoritized populations, particularly for cancer mortality rates, remain a major public health concern. Men from underrepresented backgrounds (Black and Hispanic men, specifically) face the pervasive effects of discrimination in their daily lives, which also contribute to the complex associations among allostatic load (a marker of chronic stress), educational opportunities, and elevated risks of cancer mortality. OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the associations among educational attainment, allostatic load, and cancer mortality risk among men. D

Effects of antidepressant type on allostatic load of male and female psychiatric outpatients.

Sex differences and antidepressant use are not systematically accounted for in studies measuring physiological dysregulations associated with chronic stress and allostatic load (AL) in neuropsychiatry. Critically, assessing commonly prescribed antidepressant medications, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) could help monitor potential iatrogenic effects on AL and health that are associated with prolonged antidepressant use. The objective of this exploratory analysis was to investigate how male and female

Estimating the burden of chronic stress through allostatic load in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia.

Despite advances in tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy, outcomes in chronic myeloid leukemia remain (CML) highly variable, underscoring the need to explore determinants beyond conventional clinical indicators. This study examined the relationship between allostatic load (AL), a biomarker-based index of cumulative chronic stress, social determinants of health (SDH), and treatment outcomes. In a retrospective cohort of 194 patients, AL was calculated using 23 biomarkers spanning cardiovascular, metabolic, hematologic, renal, and hepatic systems. Higher AL was associated with adverse SDH and

Addiction and the brain antireward system.

A neurobiological model of the brain emotional systems has been proposed to explain the persistent changes in motivation that are associated with vulnerability to relapse in addiction, and this model may generalize to other psychopathology associated with dysregulated motivational systems. In this framework, addiction is conceptualized as a cycle of decreased function of brain reward systems and recruitment of antireward systems that progressively worsen, resulting in the compulsive use of drugs. Counteradaptive processes, such as opponent process, that are part of the normal homeostatic limit

Embodied Sensory Deprivation Hypothesis (ESDH): An Evolutionary Model of Sensory Malnutrition Linking Interoceptive Dysregulation, Anxiety, and Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction.

The human nervous system evolved in environments characterized by continuous exposure to rich, multimodal bodily inputs, including locomotion, manual activity, physical effort, social touch, sexual contact, environmental variability, thermal fluctuations, and complex proprioceptive challenges. In contrast, modern lifestyles have progressively reduced many of these embodied sensory exposures through sedentarism, automation, climate-controlled environments, cushioned footwear, reduced manual labor, digital socialization, and diminished physical contact. Here, we propose the Embodied Sensory Depr

Linking childhood allostatic load, early adversity and the emergence of mental health symptoms in early adulthood: Analysis of the ALSPAC longitudinal birth cohort.

BACKGROUND: It has been well-established that the allostatic load (AL) index, a cumulative score of multi-system dysregulation in response to chronic stress, is significantly increased at the time of a psychiatric diagnosis. However, no studies have investigated if there is an association between the AL index in childhood and the later development of mental health symptoms in young adults. METHODS: Using data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), a population cohort from Bristol, United Kingdom, we investigated the AL index at age 9 years and the risks for mental

Neuroendocrine biomarkers, social relations, and the cumulative costs of stress in Taiwan.

Allostatic load (AL) is thought to represent the physiological toll that builds up over the life course as a consequence of the body's response to stress. An important aim of this paper is to test this widely held-but little investigated-understanding of what AL represents. More specifically, using the Social Environment and Biomarkers of Aging Study (SEBAS), a nationally representative survey of Taiwan conducted in year 2000, this paper scrutinizes the connection between stressful life histories and neuroendocrine allostatic load (NAL). Stressful life histories are operationalized through the
