In-house ammonia induced lung impairment and oxidative stress of ducks.

Ammonia (NH3) is a toxic gas that in intensive poultry houses, damages the poultry health and induces various diseases. This study investigated the effects of NH3 exposure (0, 15, 30, and 45 ppm) on growth performance, serum biochemical indexes, antioxidative indicators, tracheal and lung impairments in Pekin ducks. A total of 288 one-day-old Pekin male ducks were randomly allocated to 4 groups with 6 replicates and slaughtered after the 21-d test period. Our results showed that 45 ppm NH3 significantly reduced the average daily feed intake (ADFI) of Pekin ducks. Ammonia exposure significantly

Influence of Substituents in the Benzene Ring on the Halogen Bond of Iodobenzene with Ammonia.

The effects on the C-I⋅⋅N halogen bond between iodobenzene and NH3 of placing various substituents on the phenyl ring are monitored by quantum calculations. Substituents R=N(CH3 )2 , NH2 , CH3 , OCH3 , COCH3 , Cl, F, COH, CN, and NO2 were each placed ortho, meta, and para to the I. The depth of the σ-hole on I is deepened as R becomes more electron-withdrawing which is reflected in a strengthening of the halogen bond, which varied between 3.3 and 5.5 kcal mol-1 . In most cases, the ortho placement yields the largest perturbation, followed by meta and then para, but this trend is not universal.

Photoacoustic detection of ammonia exhaled by individuals with chronic kidney disease.

Ammonia (NH3) has been reported as a breath biomarker for chronic kidney disease (CKD) usually detected at concentrations greater than 0.25 parts per million by volume (ppmV). NH3 was detected in breath of individuals with CKD through gaseous photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS). The efficiency of hemodialysis (HD) was demonstrated. Eight volunteers aged between 20 and 60 years and without previous respiratory disease were eligible, among which six were control volunteers (CV) and two volunteers with advanced CKD, named CKDV1 and CKDV2. The presence of CKD was confirmed by the calculation of creat

Photoelectron Spectroscopy of Benzene in the Liquid Phase and Dissolved in Liquid Ammonia.

We report valence band photoelectron spectroscopy measurements of gas-phase and liquid-phase benzene as well as those of benzene dissolved in liquid ammonia, complemented by electronic structure calculations. The origins of the sizable gas-to-liquid-phase shifts in electron binding energies deduced from the benzene valence band spectral features are quantitatively characterized in terms of the Born-Haber solvation model. This model also allows to rationalize the observation of almost identical shifts in liquid ammonia and benzene despite the fact that the former solvent is polar while the latt

Hypothesis: role for ammonia neutralization in the prevention and reversal of heart failure.

Ammonia plays a central role in the life and death of all living organisms and has been studied for over 100 yr. Ammonia is necessary for growth and development, but it is toxic in excess, and, as a result, differing methods of ammonia neutralization have evolved. After physiological and pathological stress to the heart, tissue ammonia levels rise. Local ammonia neutralization may be inadequate, and excess ammonia may exert its toxic effects. Phenylbutyrate (PBA), which is Federal Drug Administration approved for the treatment of elevated blood ammonia in urea cycle disorders, provides an acce

Proton-Coupled Reduction of an Iron Cyanide Complex to Methane and Ammonia.

Nitrogenase enzymes mediate the six-electron reductive cleavage of cyanide to CH4 and NH3 . Herein we demonstrate for the first time the liberation of CH4 and NH3 from a well-defined iron cyanide coordination complex, [SiP(iPr) 3 ]Fe(CN) (where [SiP(iPr) 3 ] represents a tris(phosphine)silyl ligand), on exposure to proton and electron equivalents. [SiP(iPr) 3 ]Fe(CN) additionally serves as a useful entry point to rare examples of terminally-bound Fe(CNH) and Fe(CNH2 ) species that, in accord with preliminary mechanistic studies, are plausible intermediates of the cyanide reductive protonation

The Measurement of Ammonia in Human Breath and its Potential in Clinical Diagnostics.

Ammonia is an important component of metabolism and is involved in many physiological processes. During normal physiology, levels of blood ammonia are between 11 and 50 µM. Elevated blood ammonia levels are associated with a variety of pathological conditions such as liver and kidney dysfunction, Reye's syndrome and a variety of inborn errors of metabolism including urea cycle disorders (UCD), organic acidaemias and hyperinsulinism/hyperammonaemia syndrome in which ammonia may reach levels in excess of 1 mM. It is highly neurotoxic and so effective measurement is critical for assessing and mon

Inactivation of adenovirus, reovirus and bacteriophages in fecal sludge by pH and ammonia.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the inactivation of adenovirus, reovirus and bacteriophages (MS2, ΦX174, 28B) in a fecal sludge. We conducted two experiments. In the first, we tested different compositions of the fecal sludge by mixing different amounts of water, feces and urine, totaling nine combinations which were kept at temperatures between 10 and 28°C. In the second study, urea was added to the mixtures, which were kept at temperatures from 5 to 33°C. The inactivation was based on a combination of temperature, pH and uncharged ammonia concentration. The increase in pH and ammonia w

Metal-free σ-bond metathesis in ammonia activation by a diazadiphosphapentalene.

A diazadiphosphapentalene derivative 5 featuring a bent geometry with two phosphorus atoms at the bridgehead has been synthesized. Under mild conditions, compound 5 readily activated ammonia to afford 1-aza-2,3-diphospholene derivative 6 bearing an enamine group. The reaction is therefore viewed as a formal σ-bond metathesis between an N-H bond of ammonia and an endocyclic P-N bond of 5. Details of the reaction mechanism for ammonia activation as well as subsequent isomerization were explored by density functional theory calculations.

Ammonia formation by metal-ligand cooperative hydrogenolysis of a nitrido ligand.

Bioinspired hydrogenation of N(2) to ammonia at ambient conditions by stepwise nitrogen protonation/reduction with metal complexes in solution has experienced remarkable progress. In contrast, the highly desirable direct hydrogenation with H(2) remains difficult. In analogy to the heterogeneously catalysed Haber-Bosch process, such a reaction is conceivable via metal-centred N(2) splitting and unprecedented hydrogenolysis of the nitrido ligands to ammonia. We report the synthesis of a ruthenium(IV) nitrido complex. The high nucleophilicity of the nitrido ligand is demonstrated by unusual N-C c

Characterization of ammonia transport by the kidney Rh glycoproteins RhBG and RhCG.

The erythrocyte Rh-associated glycoprotein (RhAG) was recently found to mediate transport of ammonia/ammonium when expressed in Xenopus laevis oocytes and yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Nonerythroid homologs, RhBG and RhCG, are expressed in the mammalian kidney connecting segment and the collecting duct, major sites of urinary ammonia secretion. This study characterizes the transport properties of murine RhBG and RhCG by ammonium analog [14C]methylamine (MA) uptake and two-electrode voltage clamping of X. laevis oocytes. Both RhBG and RhCG mediated transport of ammonia, but differed in affini

Excretion of ammonia by Lucilia cuprina larvae suppresses immunity in sheep.

Attempts to immunise sheep against natural infestations by Lucilia cuprina larvae have not been effective. Yet it is known that the larvae excrete the immunosuppressant ammonium bicarbonate. The effect of larval ammonium and nonionic ammonia on immunopathobiology was evaluated in 12 infested sheep. The concentration of ammonium in veins draining infested sites was measured in another group of four sheep. Mean jugular unionized ammonia concentration increased 3.5 to 5.6 times above pre-infested control levels. Mean venous ammonium concentrations draining infested sites were 13 times higher than

The gastric juice urea and ammonia levels in patients with Campylobacter pylori.

The authors studied gastric juice ammonia and urea nitrogen levels to determine how they are altered by gastric Campylobacter pylori (CP) infection. Patients with chronic gastritis (20), peptic ulcer (24), hepatic cirrhosis (10), chronic renal failure (13), or gastric remnant (20) were included. Endoscopic biopsy specimens stained with the Warthin-Starry stain were evaluated for the presence of CP. Blood and gastric juice analysis was performed for 11 of the patients with chronic renal failure and 37 patients from the remaining groups. CP was identified in gastric biopsies from 50 of 87 (57.5%

The metabolic basis for the genesis of seizures: the role of the potassium-ammonia axis.

A conceptual approach to the understanding of the pathogenesis of idiopathic seizures is presented. Hypokalemia and/or alkalosis promotes the elaboration of an alkaline urine, which increases the renal return of ammonia and exposes the brain to chronically higher concentrations of ammonia. In the brain, ammonia is preferentially detoxified to glutamine and therefore depletes the available glutamic acid, which is also a precursor of GABA, the major mediator of central inhibition. Mild chronic elevations of ammonia may also result in long-term nutritional alterations of amino-acid precursors of

Effects of ammonia and organic acids on the intradental sensory nerve activity.

Ammonia and organic acids constitute a major part of the bacterial metabolites formed in carious decay. The aim of the present study was to investigate their effect on the intradental sensory nerves. Nerve impulse activity was recorded from canine teeth in cats after application of the test solutions in deep dentinal cavities. Ammonia (17-134 mM) consistently generated nerve impulses, whereas organic acids (0.001-1 M) failed to induce any impulse activity. In contrast, acid application resulted in an inhibition of the ongoing nerve activity induced by various stimuli (hypertonic NaCl solution,

Relation of renal cortical gluconeogenesis, glutamate content, and production of ammonia.

Glutamate is an inhibitor of phosphate dependent glutaminase (PDG), and renal cortical glutamate is decreased in metabolic acidosis. It has been postulated previously that the rise in renal production of ammonia from glutamine in metabolic acidosis is due primarily to activation of cortical PDG as a consequence of the fall in glutamate. The decrease in cortical glutamate has been attributed to the increase in the capacity of cortex to convert glutamate to glucose in acidosis. In the present study, administration of ammonium chloride to rats in an amount inadequate to decrease cortical glutamat
